A finer point only slightly touched on is that GDP doesn't by default index market viability or quality of life, and in many cases of uncertainty across many different parts of the market it actually indicates volatility. GDP is a factor of how quickly and how much money is moving around in the economy. Within these numbers there's a big difference between shrewdly spending a trillion dollars on security or infrastructure and using it to put a McDonald's into Martian orbit. The government is not spending money wisely and legislating appropriately, neither toward making or saving money which the middle and low class person could then earn and own in benefit, such is why the numbers don't seem to match reality of inflation for the common man. Regardless of the known shortcomings of trickle down economics and imaginary equity this has been made worse by the recent years of emergency spending that have not been offset with shrewd spending. Every single time the government and/or are Fed forced to play debt games with the economy things are subnominal, if they were good we'd be playing profit games- that's the real indication whether things are presently up or down.
