I just watched the Doors performance on Ed Sullivan as it is available on KZbin. The story is generally true about being asked to change the lyric. Ray Manzerek says they volunteered to come up with an alternate lyric rather than the suggestion about "better." That, I believe, was from the Oliver Stone movie rather than real life. Also, Jim did NOT emphasize the lyric, but sang it normally, or even low key. This is why you don't do research by just watching the movie.

And according to the massive Bob Spitz biography of the Beatles, the Beatles had been *huge* fans of Elvis ever since Elvis broke, as had most of the world. (They had seen Elvis movies in England.) When the Beatles came to America for the first time and checked into their suite, the telegram from Elvis had been placed where it would be noticed, taped to a piece of poster-board with a ribbon on it. One of them said, "It's a message from Elvis!" and John, being his usual jocular self, replied "Elvis who"? It was Frank Sinatra whom the Beatles snubbed, probably due to Frank wisecracking earlier that the Beatles weren't fit to sing in public. False move, Frank. Years later Frank called "Something" one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, but I don't know whether he saved face or not.

From what I've heard, that incident with Elvis's performance only being shown from the waist up occurred on his THIRD appearance on Ed Sullivan's program, and it wasn't even Sullivan who introduced Elvis on that particular night, because he, Sullivan, was sick at the time, so actor Charles Laughton had to fill in for him. The one thing that really me think was that Mr. Sullivan seemed not to be in pain, which without modern medicines to control the disease made me suspect that he was on a large amount of pain killers, which were widely available during his time, just so that he could walk, having such a medical condition in such an advanced stage. Not saying I know he was using pain killers, but it's highly probable. Now that doctors are loathed to prescribe pain killers, without modern meds controlling my AS, I would be unable to walk and in a wheelchair by now. So, it seems a logical conclusion.

Hey, let's give a shout out to Peter "Herman" Noone being improperly introduced on one of many appearances of the Suliivan show.

Ed Sullivan DID NOT mispronounce his name. He said "Buddy Holly & his Crickets". Ed Sullivan DID NOT turn off his amp half way through the performance. The volume of his amp was a bit low but it remained THE SAME through the entire performance. You can still hear it. All you have to do is watch the video from 1958. Stop FABRICATING some things. LOL

You made a huge mistake! The Door’s Jim Morrison did not expose himself in New Haven! It was Miami in 1969. He was indeed arrested in New Haven in 1967 but it was for something totally different…it was for arguing with a police man. He ended up getting maced for disrespecting a police man and after the performance he was arrested

Yeah, this channel gets a 'do not recommend' from me. Sloppy content.

According to his band mates, in the books they wrote, Jim never actually exposed himself on stage anyway. He might have given the illusion that he did while performing but that was it.

Grew up on the tail end of the Sullivan show. He seemed very uncool to me, even as a 5 year old. This video doesn't really change that impression.

So it's ok to have footage of Jimmy Fallon instead of Jim Morrison?

While Ed Sullivan did go ahead and book Elvis, he gave strict instructions to the cameramen to only show him from the waist up.

There was never any animosity between Elvis and the Beatles. Elvis always said there’s room for everybody, and the Beatles idolized Elvis

I agree. Also the Beatles were invited to Graceland to visit as well as other English singer Tom Jones. They all got on well.

One more not mentioned: when Sullivan heard about country Joes “ gimme an f… gimme a u .. song, he cancelled him and paid him not to appear. And Bo Diddeley not playing a song Sullivan requested got him banned

I understand the youtube-video-meat-grinder world we live in but (2:51) showing Jimmy Fallon instead of Jim Morrison and (5:19) NOT Buddy Holly. It makes you question the integrity of the piece as a whole. It will only get worse when AI does all writing, voiceover, editing and uploading.

For us older people : I was just a little kid...but does anyone remember when Sullivan had the 4 really tall native men from Africa on the show ? Remember how shocked he was when he walked out and smelled the odor of cow manure ? It was used on their hair lol lol He was on the verge of throwing up lol

TV is just another form of entertainment therefore, edd has no right to ask the band to change the lyrics to their song just because they’re on TV, you hear it on the radio as it is intended I think it was far too old to host to show that doesn’t even understand the entertainment of the day

Nobody “turns their neck.” They turn their head. The neck remains relatively stationary while the head swivels on the neck. Consult Gray’s Anatomy for further details.

All the rest may be partially true but Buddy Holly and Ed didn't have a falling out over a song. Ed didn't turn off Buddy's sound to his amplifier. I've seen the clips and it ain't there ...If Ed had asked that Buddy change a song , Buddy, being a savvy performer , would have changed it. Buddy knew the importance of the Sullivan Show. They were cordial to each other when Buddy first came out and shook hands after his last song. I guess you had to add a lie to fill your time on this clip. Some of the other things you show here are also questionable after watching the whole thing. Ed knew which songs Buddy would be playing before the show aired. Morrison simply said nothing and did Light My Fire his way.
@jeffclement2468 Жыл бұрын
He cut the lights out on Buddy. Which is why we see him playing under one spotlight here. It's in a book about Buddy. ✌
@wesleycook7687 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffclement2468 Don't believe a word of it. I've seen all the Sullivan clips. His amplifier wasn't cut off. The sound wasn't tampered with. And it was a common practice to put performers under one spotlight. Bobby Darin had one spotlight. I don't know what book you're reading or what you were smoking at the time but I've seen the clips. Buddy was savvy enough to change a song if Sullivan requested it. After all, Ed knew the songs ahead of time. All the clips are in The Real Buddy Holly Story produced by Paul McCartney..

How about a list of the acts Ed Sullivan introduced incorrectly; such as Rosemary Clooney for starters.
