The optimal temperature for growing tilapia is 75 to 85 degrees F. Considering then the constantly moving water or aerosolizing of water, such as in the "Eden" type system. It seems the inherent risk may be having the walls of your shelter "sweat" due to water condensation. If that occurs your next problem will be algae growth on the walls of your grow rooms. Understand, I bring these things up not to be difficult, but rather as someone who has grown traditional farming [fields], high tunnels, and greenhouse for many years. I understand there are always pitfalls. In addition, I would point out that I absolutely love the idea of your shelters so addressing these problems is important. A separate but equally important issue...at least for me here, as I would personally only consider an aquaponics system, such a system should likely be run continuously. Consider... if there is a crisis that "required" you to use your shelter, tilapia spawn will not just show up on your doorstep that morning waiting for you to take them down in the shelter with you. Additionally, at the point you put tilapia into a system your chemistries do not automatically support growing plants. There is chemistry working here! It is a process, an evolving cascade of chemical changes to get to a point your fish support those plants. Once reached it can be maintained continuously. Possibly the answer may lie in an above ground system that at a given time the supports a below ground [shelter] system. Prepping for me is a lifestyle. It has been for a lifetime, which for me is the better part of a century. Again, I am honestly seeking answers to these problems in order to realistically use these systems in a "shelter" such as yours...which clearly are outstanding. : )

I imagine the Swiss system would help with moisture in the grow room or even a new beefed up system specifically for the room housing the planters as for the tilapia situation I think ur right you would probably have a normal fish farm on the surface and when shit hit bring them down along with acclimated plants or have food already growing in the shelter year round before anything happens so you can have ur system up and running before an emergency that way no wait time nore risk that the sudden chemical imbalance would kill them off my main issue would be food waste what would you do with dead tilapia or left over bones and rotting plant matter would probably be wise to add a wood burning stove or a incinerator of some kind Into the shelter

seems like the shelf life of the seeds, medium and nutrient solution would be relevant to the applicability in a survival scenario. not to mention the moisture content added to the air in your shelter. @gonefishing3644 Жыл бұрын
I used to raise orchid plants indoors in the 1990s using grow racks and full spectrum fluorescent bulbs and have also done outdoor, in-the-ground vegetable and fruit gardening. I have some concerns about the feasibility of growing food plants in an underground bunker. Some of the common food plants, such as tomatoes, peppers and strawberries, have to be pollinated to set fruit. Many of the temperate zone food plants are not self-pollinating. You will not have bees and other insect pollinators inside a bunker. Be sure to have an artist's tiny paint brush to do pollination by hand if you are not sticking to growing salad greens and culinary herbs. And there is a narrow range of time when a blossom can be pollinated so expect to do this hand-pollination daily as more tiny blossoms are produced. And you may need a way to heat the soil because some seeds will not germinate in the 55-65 " F. temperature range of an underground bunker. You may also need spare light bulbs, because every kind of full-spectrum lighting I have used will lose some of that spectrum over time well before the bulbs burn out. Lack of full-spectrum light usually means spindly, yellowing plants, poor production of flowers, poor fruit setting and poor crop yields. I suspect some people will see this system as a way to grow marijuana underground during the apocalypse. Rather than growing full-size food plants or illicit substances, it would be much easier and quicker to use these Eden grow systems for sprouting wheat grain, mung beans and an assortment of micro green seeds in order to have a steady supply of vitamin-rich sprouts and baby salad greens. But you would need a large supply of seeds for sprouting of you want to keep a small household supplied with fresh greens.

It looks like a great system. I'm curious though; does the misting, combined with exhaled occupant moisture, increase the likelihood of mold growth in the shelter?
@edengrowsystems Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! Most of the mist is contained within the root chamber by design, to recover and recycle the maximum amount of water possible. So, the system only contributes the amount of humidity released by the plants due to transpiration and a small amount through the grow pod collar around the plant stem.

I would also imagine this would be used in a room with the swiss air filtration system to dispell any possible stray moisture

@@AtlasSurvivalShelters I have designed, built and sold commercial aquaponic and hydroponic systems for 15 years. Nothing is new on this system. These guys just repackage into a slick turn key for people who have never grown plants. All the pictures on their site show lanky lettuce and tiny strawberries. 540w of lighting for 2 levels is barely enough PPFD to grow bib lettuce, let alone fruiting crops. How much generator and fuel are we going to devote to growing vegetative crops and fish? Don’t forget to heat that water for the shrimp or tilapia. You’re generator goes down for more than a day this system will die. Tiny tubing like that will clog over time and require disassembly and cleaning. The filter and sprayers will need cleaning every few crops. Same with the pump. How many systems we maintaining? Backup parts? Pumps under pressure will fail, just a matter of time. Aeroponics-nothing new. Are all components food safe? BPA free? UV stabilized? LED lights put out UV, at least the good ones that grow crops well. What fertilizers are we using? Organic? Clogging goes up exponentially. Mineral salts? Better get one without heavy metals. No automatic pH adjustment means you’re monitoring that setup everyday times how ever many systems. Feed the fish times how ever many systems. Labor starts to pile up. I guess we’ll have lots of time on our hands if we’re locked in. Might be good for a short term bug out. But at what point does floor space and generator capacity become a premium? If you got the money just build out a farm level with resilient, well-designed and layered systems.

@panpiper Жыл бұрын
A bunker will maintain ambient ground heat without a heating system. Depending on where you live that will likely be somewhere between 50-60 degrees farenheight. Plants will survive but they will grow slower. That said the lights will provide a bit of heat and it wouldn't take much extra power to heat a room in your shelter 10-20 degrees above ambient.
@chuck26241 Жыл бұрын
@@panpiper yes that's exactly what I was thinking. With the exception LED's don't give off heat or at least the ones I purchased don't and it stated that on the package as well.
@panpiper Жыл бұрын
@@chuck26241 LEDs 'do' give off heat, but not very much, because they are very efficient at turning electricity into light rather than heat. However all the power that is converted to light gets converted to heat when the light hits the stuff it illuminates. All that light ultimately does become ambient heat, in exact measure to the amount of electricity used. Admitedly for LED lights that is a low amount of power, but it is not nothing and it does heat a little bit.

This product is very interesting and seems like it would function well, but if you are serious about Aeroponic and Hydroponic farming, you should learn yourself. You should build your own system, which is not hard to do if you have the money. Imagine sitting in your bunker and your X part of your system breaks and you don't know what's wrong. Now you will starve, where if know the system because you built it, you will be able to identify the pump broke or whatever. Also, these systems are high maintenance and its not uncommon for a pump to break or mineral build up in tubing and pumps needing to be cleaned. Every 6 months in my experience, using artificial fertilizers etc to grow cannabis. It also depends on what setup you have, the best in my experience is deep water culture with a water circulation system.
