Not all advice is good advice, and this video editing tip made my videos worse.
All things considered, it's about finding your voice as a creator!

Do you edit at a fast pace, or more relaxed?
@RafaCuber

I used to make a cut every 2 seconds, making 3mins videos. Now after 6 years of content creation I am moving towards 10+ minutes videos with less cuts and better story telling.

Well said! I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time as well, and I’m glad to see smaller creators saying this. I noticed you following your advice in your own cuts and it felt very relaxed and natural. Nice job.

We have been known to attempt to follow the advice of YT Gurus and have had it backfire on our channel big time. We made a pact to stop listening to that and just make the videos we want to and put our whole into them. Sometimes the edit is more fast paced depending on the situation and other times it’s more slow and organic to let the situation breath. Like you mentioned cutting out all the breaths and pauses to make an epic run-on sentence video is so annoying and not how humans communicate. Plus the cuts make it too jarring unless b-roll is played over it. I do prefer the more relaxed style makes me feel the person speaking is more confident in what they are saying and not just trying to ram as many words into my ears as possible! Really enjoy your sound design videos look forward to more!

Thanks for sharing your experience, and the kind words! Yeah I think a slightly more relaxed pace for my videos makes me easier to connect with. That's what I'm going with at the moment anyway haha (as a side note, I actually enjoy the pacing of my own videos much more now as well!)

When people ask how my editing/style has changed over the years -- it's a long list. But this advice is very high on the last. New creators: Ryan is giving you solid advice here. Be authentic, be honest, be entertaining. Let your edit reflect that. Very good advice.

For someone who its creating shorts with lest than a minute this advice is not viable. Not because the value of giving the right information and providing the best throughout your content, but also because the lack of time to put all the pieces togheter in less than a minute. I appreciate your advice, but this only applies to a specific audience.

Yeah shorts are a bit of their own thing. Having said that, I’ve been trying to work on being concise in my delivery for shorts, rather than chopping to oblivion in the edit! I think that’s been positive. I don’t create a lot of shorts though so I’m not going to pretend to be an expert

This is very interesting mostly because I feel the same thing. We try to follow a lot of advice that worked on other people but that doesn't mean it will work for us. I'm mostly trying to focus on being genuine first, and worrying about fancy edits later, when I feel complements the style I'm going for, but that's basically it. Be professional, but be you, people expect quality but they also expect a person behind the screen, not another machine spewing the maximum amount of content in the minimum amount of time.

Yep, and finding your style takes time. Probably years of creating to really nail down exactly how you want stuff to work

am i crazy haha i thought the whole point of why you put so much cuts at the time of saying you dont need so much cuts was to emphasize your point lol hey man wheather thats what you were going for or not message recieved and message agreed, great vid!!

I think I agree with you. But also, your cuts where you pause before/after in this video feel odd to me. The natural pauses in your speech feel authentic though. Maybe I've just watched too many youtube videos recently. Either way, you earned a sub from me.
@RyanGreen

Hey thanks for the sub and the feedback! Curious if there were particular ones that stood out? I don’t think I really added pauses in the edit on this one but it’s helpful to hear how it comes across!

@@RyanGreen 1:02 was the first one I noticed. Bear in mind, you were discussing more natural cuts at this exact moment. Then 1:14. And then 1:30. I think those would have been half a second less if you were following the common editing advice. But your video felt very true to you and authentic, maybe it's those little pauses that helps 🤷

Nice Video :) I myself have tested a bit of each in different videos to see what my viewers seem to prefer. But I agree everything is not black or white and works for everyone. You have to make a video you yourself are happy with, then you have a greater chance of success Take care from North Swden

@@RyanGreen For me it seems to work best if there is some kind of movement in the video at least all the time even if there are only a few long clips many times in a 10 min video . However, on some longer videos, I have started to make an intro that is similar to a shorts clip with several clips from different scenes for people who are more stressed just to make them look a little longer anyway. But you can't please everyone
