The Edsel Show - Looking as LIVE as it did on October 13, 1957

The earliest surviving videotaped TV show we know of, recovered by Kris Trexler, and re-remastered for KZbin at 60fps by 5mile-TV, so we can all enjoy it looking as LIVE as it did when it was first transmitted in 1957. Big, big thanks to Kris...
To keep the size of the file down to below 1GB I trimmed it to the original 4:3 aspect ratio, and cheekily shrunk Kris's captions down a little to fit them in, but he did a lovely job on comparing the kinescope and the VT. I currently working of correcting the frame rate of some kinescopes and interpolating them back to 60fps (yes, they were actually originally 60i, but with modern flat screen we need them deinterlaced, converted from 24fps to 30 fps carefully, then and motion interpolated to return the LIVE video look.
But this recording is a joy to watch, and I'll be uploading the beautiful earliest TV show recorded and surviving in color - an hour special with Fred Astaire, again at 60 frames per second. Watch this space....

looks & sounds amazing! these early quad tapes would come to be called "low band" when a new, improved quad format (& probably improved tape formulation) which was known as "high band" came out. the improved format made for notably better horiz. resolution - sharper. i realized the difference when the Ed Sullivan Beatles DVD came out - it looked fuzzier than my 3/4" u-matic bootleg copy of the show! turns out, the Sullivan archives were recorded at the theatre in low band - and the bootleg i had was recorded in high band in the CBS broadcast center on 57th street. *APPLE CORPS TAKE NOTE!*

The show was videotaped for delayed telecast to the West Coast three hours later- and the kinescope was used as a backup in case something happened to the videotape, and later sent {via 16mm "bicycle prints"} to smaller affiliates (who usually carried more than one network's programming) for delayed telecasts as much as three weeks after the original broadcast date.

SuperJasonGold Even limited to 12Khz upper limit, Quad videotape sound was almost as good as 1/4inch tape, running as it did at 15 inches per second, longitudinally. We tend to be spoiled by poor quality optical sound tracks on b/w films and pre-70's TV kinescopes. It is nice to hear and see Bob and Bing at very nearly the resolution of living human senses! I hope I'm not forced to take this down. I had to remove The Fred Astaire Show 1958 for copyright reasons. Pity because I gain no money from this, but if the copyright holder were to make recordings like that available at 60fps, I wouldn't need to upload a 60fps copy myself. I only want people to gawk at how good live TV looked and sounded when first broadcast! If the copyright holder wants me to take it down, please ask me before reporting me to KZbin, and I'll be happy to oblige!
