It was always interesting to me that it's not really clear that Alice will be the Final Girl until Ralph comes out of the closet. Up until that point we've had Annie as the implied Final Girl, and then Brenda with the nutritional facts, vegetarianism, & "calm down, Ned" as a Final Girl candidate. I think the Mrs. Voorhees things falls short for modern audiences (even for me as mid-range GenXer) because we have no idea of who Betsy Palmer is outside of Friday the 13th. But for my parents & uncles she was a very nice sweet lady who was on the all talk shows and just kind of warm and sweet. She was Meta before we called it that. I do think Palmer's suggestion to Sean Cunningham that she should've at least been having a cup of coffee or some pie in that opening scene when Annie stumbles into the coffee shop would probably make it play better to audiences with no flipping clue as to who Palmer is. Solid work as always, Michael. I would love to see you dig into Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween 3 (yes, 3), and any Argento like this.
