I think Lisa succeeding Kyoraku as captain was a good choice, knowing her relationship with Nanao and Kyoraku. She brings the same vibe as Kyoraku to the eighth division.

I had a theory that the 8th division was strong as hell because of Kyoraku. He was very sure of Lisa's strength, and said that he has a lot of faith in his squad members. He has always been super observant and sharp, so I doubt that was misplaced. But then there was the stuff with Nanao about her never being in a fight, because Kyoraku is so protective. That may just be because of Kyoraku losing Lisa, and the promise he made that made him want to protect her. Its interesting because of how unpredictable Kyoraku's personality is

I like the relaxed non standard command style Shunsui held without compromising his lethality. It foreshadows his unorthodox tactics he'd deploy in the TYBW and then the general reforms he'd initiate as Captain Commander for Soul Society after the war. Shunsui also stopping Nanao from finishing Chad also shows how much he cares for her, he does not want her burdened with blood stained hands.

Kubo confirmed recently that Ginrei was also a Captain for over 100 years in TBTP. As per Shunsui, I believe the prior Div 8 Captain was his older brother.

Nanao was the daughter of Kyoraku's brothers wife, but is she his niece? He is very protective of her, and while in some ways it might appear flirtatious, it might also just be playful in an "odd uncle" way. Its been a while since I watched/read the series so I don't remember outright if he acted more than that towards her, my memory seems to see it as far more protective than anything else.

Ive always had a theory that Shunsui and Hikifune had something romantic going on. His bankai looks a lot like Hikifune herself, maybe she had some influence on young Shinsui while his zanpakuto was still developing… also he seems to know a lot about Hikifunes promotion while no other captain or even Hiyori her liutenant were informed beforehand 🤔

I think if Kyoraku had a choice he would had loved to go back to the 8th division. Offcourse he would be surrounded by women, but he would feel young again among all the women that loves a bit more of the new technology (having smartphones like Renji did and being on the equivalent of Facebook). We know from Yuyu that Kisuke brought the equivalent of "the internet" to soul soceity during the skip between the end of the TYBW and the start of the Hell arc. I'd like to believe that the 8th division under Lisa's leadership would be the first one to accept these changes, she loved to browse through like swimwear catalogs during her time in the world of the living and was the kind of person that loved stuff like schoolgirl outfits, preferably really short ones and in the Hell arc she still does by having her soulreaper outfit cut up way shorter then the others, exposing stomachs and legs for all to see, and likeminded, newer, bit like our internet era of soulreapers like Yuyu would accept this way easier then the older more traditional soulreapers would. Also props to Lisa on learning Bankai and getting that promotion to captain at the end of the TYBW, I wonder if we ever get an expansion on the Hell arc and get stuff like her bankai in action, maybe agains other captains that were send to Hell because of their dense rei.

Tbh I don’t think it’s weird at all for Shunsui and Nanao to leave the 8th leaderless. In world the Soul Society is in complete disarray and with multiple people out there was a lack of talent. The immediacy of the transfer emphasised the fact the Soul Society felt thin on talent and on a back foot after this monumental first invasion. It would’ve been nice to have seen the reaction from the lower rank regardless. Also, Shunsui requesting for Nanao to transfer and having two VCs was the first act of Shunsui upending the past and set up a tone the tone of his Captain Commander tenure.

Yeah I agree. Like it doesn't matter if you have x number of divisions period, it just is the way it is. He was the head captain so he could still order the captain less division regardless. Basically he was still their captain plus everyone else's. Back in the day there was no gotei at all so... although yes at that time they were in a critical moment, but in that case would you want a brand new captain in that position? It makes more sense to keep it vacant and just keep it structured mainly as it was.

We don't even know if they had 13 divisions originally if I remember correctly. They were merely known as the divisions and not until much later the Gotei 13.

@@A_Black_Sheep94 We do know that the gotei 13 did not originally exist. Yamamoto created the school first and then the Gotei. Before that it was just people running around doing whatever they wanted, although it seems like the noble families and zero squad existed before this even. Originally there were "shinigami" etc like the soul king and the nobles, the nobles decided that there needed to be order in the world's so the soul king separated them into soul society etc, and then imprisoned and guarded him.

I always held the theory that the Eigth *did* have a specific role, but a secret one. Internal Affairs. Kyoraku putting up this wise but party-boy facade, whilst being the one to secretly keep everyone in line behind the scenes, being Yamamoto's ears and eyes. Both he and Lisa show their ease at fulfilling this role, in Soul Society Arc, and with Lisa spying on the Captains during the meeting. It would also explain the ease at which he takes command, and why he picks Lisa as his replacement over someone like Love Aikawa. And naturally, with the 2nd existing as they are, they provide perfect cover for the 8th. You have some jokey characters like Tatsufasa as distractions, as Kyoraku himself plays, whilst Lisa or someone else is behind the scenes. It also fits perfectly with Kyoraku's tactics and personality.

Kyouraki himself strongly reminds me of Dionysus - the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity, and theatre in ancient Greek religion and myth. (from Wiki) It's exactly the same archetype, kind of as if Kubo shaped him after the ancient Greek god🤔😊🌺

Personally, I think Lisa and Yuyu sort of complete the vision Kyoraku had for the Eighth Division in a way he couldn't really obtain. His ideals of beauty, freedom, pleasure - a very "do your own thing" kind of mentality - were sort of limited by Nanao being so straight-laced and Kyoraku being a product of the old guard. I think the First Division is a better fit for Nanao's very strict, disciplinarian, goal-oriented mindset, and I think it would be really cool if she eventually inherits the mantle of Captain-Commander from Kyoraku not because of combat ability, but because of her organized mind and leadership abilities. When it comes to Lisa and Yuyu, they're very clearly an avant-garde pair who inject a lot of fresh, eccentric energy into the Gotei 13. I think you can argue that's the Eighth Division's role: they're always this dynamic, free spirited element in the Gotei 13 that keeps at least one area of the organization from being too inflexible and orthodox. Less an official role, and more a philosophical one. And with Lisa being simultaneously a seemingly very competent, focused person and someone who's very in-touch with new and somewhat out-there trends - like her affinity for josei manga - combined with Yuyu's very fashion-conscious, peppy, and unorthodox outlook, I think they can realize that vision for the Eigth better. Even though Kyoraku will always be young at heart in one way or another and empathetic to rebels, pleasure-seekers, and the unusual, I think that youth really belongs to the young and it took a changing of the guard for his ideals to be realized in the Eighth Division.

I wish Kubo and Studio can change some Schrift abilities in Animation, I wanted every members of sternritter be more broken than before. G: Glutton, change it to Gravity *Gravity manipulation. I: Iron, change it to Immunity *Can immune anything and everything. For example: immune to time power, immune to hax, immune to logic. K: Unknown but wish can be revealed in animation. He is one of my favorite as well. I also like the fact that, in my opinion, fighting seems to be a last resort. He only fights Chad when he relaizes the reason for Chad wanting to fiight and he felt that it was wrong of him dismiss Chad's feelings. Unfortunity, Chad gets wiped out. And he really doesn't want to fight Stark as well. He is talking to him, and then he seems exaserbated and he starts his fight with Stark. I do like the fact that he may not always play by the rules. Yea, he is one of favorite charcters from the first time I saw the series.

I would have preferred that Nanao stayed in Squad 8 under Lisa. I think Lisa would have personally made sure Nanao became a lot more capable in a fight. I suspect Nanao will only continue to be overprotected, and thus, not made battle capable, under Shunsui. All the enemies can't be divine in nature.
