Yea it’s not great. I’m from the south in the US and if you live in certain areas that vote a certain way, they make it extremely inconvenient and discourage voting.
@ellec37472 ай бұрын
It feels that way because it is, sadly. The message here is optimistic: the system the founding fathers set up isn't perfect, but it's endured this long. However, the devil has been in the details for years, mainly in the covert and overt ways some powers that be try to undermine voting. In some states, it's made easy and convenient to register and to cast your ballot. In other states, it's a death of a thousand cuts that leads to apathy, especially among younger voters. ...And younger voters tend to skew more progressive.. The cast of Hamilton is pretty perfectly positioned for boosting the signal, but you start to see it all over in a voting year. Heartfelt calls to vote, to register, to help people get to the polls in areas where you need to jump through hoops to do so. Lucky me, I just have to remind my neighbors that early voting is super easy here.
@Kat-ov9duАй бұрын
I feel like a lot of it comes from boomers and adults saying younger ppp, especially newly turned 18, are "too young to understand politics" and so push down on the idea young adults should vote For me, my family never told me anything and when i was a senior in HS i was given like 4? Months to learn everything about our government and voting before i graduated. So many ppl say "kids" shouldnt get in politics and they infantilize 18 y/o or 20 when its convenient to stop them from "voting stupidly". Its a way of voter suppression thats systemic as if we as adults shouldnt be involved or are too stupid to understand our world. Ppl become compliant with this idea when its not actually shown or spoken to with us. Its why things like this tbh? Im all for. It reaches out to ppl who might be in this group who arent exposed to its impact. The downfall of society is never an act voted in, but a road paved by those who are too ignorant to stop it or pushed to the side.

We get it. But many don't, or won't, or can't. Even in our important 2020 election, 60 million - about one third - of U.S. voters didn't vote. Avoiding it is too easy and, in many states, voting is made too hard by electeds who don't want voters to vote. Perhaps someday we'll join advanced nations, that require their citizens to vote.

As a civics teacher, I made sure my students understood that voting is the way they make their voice heard on local, state, and federal levels. That, regardless of whether they were Republican, Democrat, or anywhere in between (funny enough, most of them were) that choosing not to vote would remove their basis for complaining about results. I was very proud of my students, conservative and liberal, who left more prepared to contribute to our great country.

This is a perfect explanation of why I support mandatory voting. Here in Australia, if you don't vote you get fined. This aims to make sure that everyone's voice is heard, and the elected representative represents the majority.
@Rebecca.422 ай бұрын
Yeah it's a totally different world out there. No democracy sausages. I like the mandatory voting but I think we are one of only 2 (?) countries in the world who do it. In theory, because it's mandatory, they have to make it as easy as possible for everyone to do ❤
@drjwatson45462 ай бұрын
G'day, fellow Aussie! Another thing I really appreciate about our system is that voting day is always on Saturday, which means that people can be in-person at the polling places without worrying about negotiating with their workplaces. The Australian Electoral Commission also does amazing work.
@KoreanKowboy932 ай бұрын
That's the thing though...here in America, the greatest country on earth, it is our RIGHT to vote if we so choose. We aren't FORCED to like you are. It's a little something we call FREEDOM
@drjwatson45462 ай бұрын
@@KoreanKowboy93 I personally prefer to see it as an obligation to count everyone's vote (even if it's blank/informal) rather than the freedom from compulsion that the US has. But I can understand why people don't like being forced to do something.

me, a minor: I am not throwing away my vote
@angelexis22 ай бұрын
As a minor you can develop your political views and as soon as you are eligible you can register to vote! Not having a vote yet is a great time to debate yourself and others and decide what you actually want to vote for. That way when the time comes, you won't be frozen in inaction or overwhelmed
@cacklingclouds36622 ай бұрын
@@angelexis2Yeah I already made my decision which is Kamala Harris. But I'm unfortunately powerless and have to rely on the adults of America to vote for the right person so people like me won't be affected by Project 2025. If people vote for Trump every minority might as well leave the country especially queer people. I doubt that enough people will vote for Harris because many people today are still dumb and conservative. So, if Project 2025 does happen (which wouldn't be surprising) then I can't wait for people to go "why are so many queer kids & adults committing s*icide out of nowhere?" Or "why are women dying from pregnancy complications?" And "why are so many people racist?" Like they didn't cause the problem of restricting talks of the LGBTQ, race theory, and wanting to ban abortion. Even after the debate with Harris and Trump, considering Donald Trump apparently has plot armor we're probably still screwed. I can ponder all day about who I want to vote for but it wouldn't make a difference. And this year matters a lot! But yeah I'm not getting my hopes up for our species.

@@angelexis2 especially if you want to develop a vendetta against half the people you will ever talk to
@eyuan23642 ай бұрын
@____________________________a but a mindset like this is partly what contributes to political polarization. I think we should develop ideas views and values for ourselves, and as we do so, treat other people with respect and hear them out. We might find many people's actual views might not be strict red or blue but more complicated, moderate or something else entirely because humans and their experiences are unique and complex. And people with differing or even seemingly incompatible views can talk civil about it and might even learn from each other, or at least that gives this country a better shot at improving its issues. If more diverse minds come together.

This is Hamilton. The play and its cast have never claimed to be neutral nonpartisan (…remember when Pence went to see the play?)
