I think it's a great product for its niche application which happens to have the largest energy use per km which is regional aviation, especially when most of the existing routes are heavily subsidized and/or money losing services that generally fly with low seat use... Here in Alberta most of them have disappeared entirely but there are certain high density corridors and regions where it makes sense and cents!

That is such a great design having the Hybrid design as here in Canada, Harbour Air has been working on their all electric but the main issue is the FAA requiring additional range for emergency use and at the moment that reduces the passenger capacity until the FAA can work past the old specification of mechanical failure issues on the ICE design and allow for less stringent requirements for such an improved power train as far as reliability is concerned.

While the challenges are daunting, it’s still fun to see them taking a step forward. I’m having trouble wrapping my head around the dual-power concept as presented. It seems like airline economics would stumble a bit at the extra costs, and as a pilot I can only think of the “what now?” if one of the outboard (cold-soaked) turbines declines to start. I know they’re smart people working hard to solve the issues, but it seems to me, from fuel-cell and railroads (diesel electric) that perhaps the gas turbine would be better employed as an onboard generator to drive the electric motors already in use. Dragging extra nacelles and feathered props seems weird, but then, I’m outside looking in, and don’t have the information they do. I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks for a good story!

Cool stuff… I can’t recall a video from a couple of years back of a similar high wing twin engine perhaps 20 seats that was manufactured as they are with basic gas engines. A firm was working on converting it to fully electric, but what concern me about that conversion was the fact that there aircraft structure has design stresses for the fuels weight to be in a typical wing tanks not in the fuselage as now that weight as batteries was placed in the fuselage. I wonder if your aircraft places the batteries in the wings.
@oldtimer2192Ай бұрын
Very promising, however one certainly hopes the battery never goes into thermal runaway as has been seen with some EV’s these days! Up in the air this would be non survivable. Some serious high temperature resistant but low weight shielding may be necessary? Ceramic fibre envelope perhaps surrounded by honeycombed high temp alloy shell?

Landing an airliner in that simulator is harder than the real thing I expect. I once was given a brief opportunity to "fly" a USAF KC-10 in its six-axis simulator by my nephew, an Air Force pilot. He expected me to crash as all first time users tend to do, but I had practiced landings for a long time on Microsoft's Flight Simulator program at home so confronted with a realistic simulator that added actual physical sensations to the control inputs, I flew a quick pattern (under zero winds, but also the midnight conditions outside the lab) successfully to a landing. My only fault was not using the pedals to steer once on the runway, as my early version of the Microsoft FS had no way to do that. I drifted off the runway before coming to a stop.

Something I've wondered with these hybrid electric aircraft is why don't they make all the propulsion motors electric, then have a single, larger (which is more efficient than several smaller) turbine acting as a generator? Because electric motors are far simpler, with reduced maintenance and purchase cost in comparison to turbines.

@johnstraw6138Ай бұрын
Wouldn’t it be better to have all electric propulsion with a larger APU generator. Aka range extender.
@0tispunkm3y3rАй бұрын
This was my thought also. However there must be a trade-off calculation somewhere. With the "range extender" you are converting chemical to mechanical to electrical and back to mechanical. Each transition costs you energy. Maybe it is more efficient to just use the mechanical energy directly for propulsion even if there maybe extra drag from having 4 props instead of 2. Something similar is done in vehicles in that when cruising or using higher powers it is the ICE that is more directly powering the wheels. In the case of Honda hybrid system they switch from a "range-extender" type arrangement and will directly clutch the engine to the wheels at motorway speeds. Maybe it is also too much weight to put in the back of the aircraft (large battery + larger APU). Though surely you could arrange batteries to distribute the mass.

I am curious on this, but moreso just the how, and what specifically you mean by 'air'. There are proposals about hydrogen powered aircraft, I think the CFM Rise is an example of this. But that requires specifically hydrogen that has to be prepared beforehand. You probably need some kind of store on the aircraft to react the air with in order to get energy out of it, that's what conventional fuel and hydrogen do. I am not sure you could get just the air from outside an aircraft and use that alone as a fuel.

Problem with electric planes is the sheer weight of the batteries. Take an EV and compare it to a similar size car in dimensions - then look at the weight. Planes also decrease fuel weight as they fly making take-off easier, infact the 737-MAX/specific Airbus models have advance takeoff profiles that makes them burn through enough fuel at a "middle" altitude to ease takeoff and improve range. Electric planes can't do this. Imo biofuels/sustainable fuels are probably a better option. Perhaps in the future we can see trijets that make use of 2 standard fueled engines for takeoff/emergency and one biofuel engine for cruise at altitude. Perhaps if the tech moves quick enough it'll just be twinjets (with propfans) with biofuel mixes for performance/sustainability. Either way, I really don't think there will be widespread proliferation of electric jets aside from niche cases with shorter-medium ranges and low noise requirements. Perhaps smaller private jets/charter jets out of more urban airports.

Hybrid in a car means commuting - engine to the ULEZ zone then turn Electric to avoid charges. As they don't exist in the air - why. You carry a battery and an engine - why not reduce weight and just use the engine, your still going to cause pollution anyway when the battery runs out and you turn the engine on.
