It's such a balancing act over-50. Recovery seems to take twice as long as it did 20-30 years ago, and yet it also seems harder to hang on to any hard-won fitness gains. I'm still at the trial and error stage.

Such wise words and interesting stuff about listening to your body and implementing a rest regime. It's something I try and do every time I pass a cafe! We gave a climb round our way called the brickworks up Bakestonedale Rd. Some clever bugger went and opened a cafe a third of the way up. Anyway it slots in nicely with that rest program you talk about!

I've not had a solid winter and I'm a fair way behind March 2023 when I was already cruising 200km loops in the Dales, but I thought the 'big week' daily diary over the past few videos might make for interesting viewing. It's important to recognise the difference between being a bit tired and being squashed flat, especially at 50+ when recovery powers are on the wane. That road is ideally named for a cafe stop... haha

Congrats again on the 'big week', Gordon - very inspiring stuff! The little bits you include on the science of exercise and recovery are really interesting. Waterproofs at the ready this week! 🙂
@clippingin15939 ай бұрын
Thanks Martin. I thought it would be interesting to use a daily diary format and record the ups and downs of a week's cycling holiday. Most of us are aware of reduced training/exercise response and compromised recovery with middle age and towards the end of the week I was experiencing 'cycling only fatigue' which the generalised HR & sleep tracker didn't detect. Useless on the bike but fine for a brisk 11.25 miles walk - I thought that was worth reporting. I'm back to it this week so most of the time I'll just be watching the rain out of the window!

Another fantastic Vlog Gordon. Amazing effort over the 8 days my friend 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻…was up Buckstones myself Friday, absolutely amazing views and luckily the sun was shining. Very very wise words regards to recovery, listen to the body

Thanks Mick. I love Buckstones, it's a shame about the outbreaks of fly-tipping. I'll bet Friday was a tough day up there with the wind! I normally do self-contained ride videos but I thought the daily vlog approach might be interesting for this week off. Seeing me unravel as the rides stack up ... haha. I felt pretty good for Sunday's Elmet ride so I'm hoping the careful overload is already starting to come through.

@@clippingin1593 the fly tipping is a blight mate, and boils my blood when I see it strewn here there and everywhere 😡… let’s say it was a tad windy, but I love the views along the top so it’s never a chore. One of my go too favourites

Cheers Ian. We've got a lot of variety on our doorsteps with everything from near-mountains like Holme Moss to those sea level plains around Beal. Good idea, I'll have to do Langsett - Strines with the chest-camera - I'll wait 'til it's warm and dry, those bends in the woods are a bit cheeky.

Cheers Matt. When it's a little warmer, and less windy, I'm going to do a 'history ride' in that area. There's a couple of battlefield sites, Roman roads, and a restored medieval chapel for starters, and now I'll add Newton Kyme.

Cheers Todd. Having a week's holiday where the bike was the main focus made such a difference. For the full Rapha effect I'd have to open with a slow-motion tracking shot, riding across a desolate moorland - in black & white, with added film grain.

Thanks Russ, that's great feedback. A few people have mentioned the Highlights guy and on the videos I've watched I can hear the similarity. The voice is a little posher but still West Yorkshire and there's an Alan Partridge/ Phil Liggett vibe, but I think I could get pretty close. They certainly know their cycling background - much more than me when it comes to post-2010 stuff. I lost contact after those great Contador vs Schleck battles.

I was really enjoying myself today until I had a little argument with a car on Hutton rugby bank. I seemed to go over in slow motion with a hell of a clatter. There’s a sharp curb where I fell and I thought well there goes the frame and it’s my best bike. Apart from a tiny scratch to the forks it was ok the top of my left hand crank took the brunt and that’s been fixed with a bit of black paint. I’m feeling ok but it might be a different story tomorrow. Needless to say the car didn’t stop but that’s par for the course. Hope you get on top of things and get back to normal 👍

That's rotten luck. As you know, bruising or inflammation can take a day or two to make itself felt - take it steady until you're sure of the extent of the injury. I felt pretty good today for the 84 miles, I think the 'big week' has been beneficial.
