People need to keep something in mind. This is literally the first time that we see the emperor in person throughout a three movie period. He’s only mentioned in passing name in the first movie. The second we only get a brief holo transmission of him to Vader. Yet the second he shuffles off that shuttle, his mere presence is something nearly as formidable as the Death Star itself. He is the ruler of the Galaxy. And not one single member of the Empire doubts it. That is absolutely amazing world building.

the way imperial march fades into the emperor’s theme is phenomenal. the triumphant sound of the march showcasing the scope and power of the empire as a whole fading into a far more sinister and foreboding sound for the arrival of sidious lets you know instantly that his mere presence inspires insurmountable fear and respect in everyone around him and that not a single person in that room doubts he is the most powerful person in the galaxy- without them (save vader and the royal guard) even knowing that he is a sith lord. here is a man- the undisputed ruler of the ridiculously massive galaxy- looking old, frail and decrepit- and not a single person around him has any doubt as to how dangerous he is. so powerful in the dark side that the people around him feel fear and they dont even know why. the perfect embodiment of pure evil

I really like how the imperial march and the empire's army in general seems like an average dictatorship initially. Vader is a complex character (though they have tried their best to dumb him down!), you could appreciate him and even admire or root for him; here though, the Emperor, without yet knowing how strong in the force he is yet, just appears completely evil, without humanity whatsoever, and this opening scene with him sets that up so well as the main villain in the saga.

Next I will laugh to show my human side to everyone and they will think that I am like Santa Claus wearing black." Didn't quite have that effect.

What I love most about this film is the subtle hints that Anakin is slowly awakening within Vader’s shell. Here when the Emperor realizes Vader wants to continue his search for Luke, Vader turns his head sharply and pauses before saying “Yes my master” in such a disappointed tone. That little moment speaks volumes. Vader doesn’t want the Emperor to know he was looking for Luke because he still wants Luke to join him in turning against the Emperor. Because of Luke, Vader is going behind the Emperor’s back and following his own goals now. He is already prioritizing Luke over the Emperor. And a part of him - the part that is Anakin - isn’t really comfortable with the thought of the Emperor working his manipulations on Luke. It’s the small but powerful crumbs sprinkled throughout the film that build up Vader’s gradual turn, so the climax is utterly and completely earned.
@SamaritanPrime
@SamaritanPrime 2 күн бұрын
There’s a bit in the ROTJ novel where Anakin, as he lays dying, has a bit of extra dialogue to Luke before he goes. “Luminous beings are we… not this crude matter.” It’s a Jedi maxim, one that Yoda gave Luke before he too died. I think of it as that really was Anakin that died on that ramp, not Vader. (Plus, with Anakin’s scenes in Ahsoka… well, I’ll just say that Anakin’s redemption isn’t quite done just yet.)

@@adrians3267 Indeed. Had Vader kept his original form, he would have become the most powerful being in the galaxy, but Palpatine only sought power for himself, so while he was angry at him for losing his body and becoming weaker with the force, he had no intentions of letting Vader somehow overthrow him, which is why he had the suit designed thus.

Fantastic scene. Little touch I noticed- when the Imperial Commander bends the knee he is looking straight ahead, presumably as most employees of the Empire and indeed citizens of the Galaxy would do for the Emperor, sort of dutifully but reluctantly- whereas Vader fully looks at the floor in devotion and fear with his bending of the knee. The terrifying villain of the first two films is reduced to a pitiful overawed nervous wreck in this scene. Great storytelling for Vader’s character development in this movie, as the Emperor continues to break his spirit & he gradually becomes weaker in physical, psychological, political and figurative stature. Sidious was ingeniously horrible to absolutely every other character in these films including his “friend”.

Folks need to understand: up until this moment in 1983, Darth Vader was THE ultimate bad guy. The physical embodiment of evil, his menacing presence made all the more terrible by his impenetrable mask, inhuman voice, and the ultra-intimidating Imperial March. Then, this hulking cyborg monster that has haunted our dreams... falls to one knee in utter supplication. The fascistic horns and shrieking strings in the score curdle into a miserable death-moan. Down the ramp walks a small, gnarled figure with a cane, unseen eyes and withered skin. And Vader is completely subservient to him. For a few moments, "Return of the Jedi" becomes a horror movie.

@@jackbruno953 Not really. In The Empire Strikes Back it plays when the Imperial Fleet and the Executor are first introduced and Vader is only a sidepiece - a part of the show so to say. It also plays tons of times way faster for example right before when the Imperial officer on a Star Destroyer is informed of approaching Rebels ships and says "Good. Our first catch of the day." It is the theme of Imperial fleets and the Empire's presence. Not necessarily Vader's. It doesn't play once during the cave scene with Luke or Luke's confrontation with Vader. Only in Return of the Jedi is the quieter leitmotif exclusively used when Vader appears physically on screen. But it is not the parade-like triumphant Empire theme used before but a laidback, more sinister version. This tactic is also used in the Prequels and The Clone Wars when Anakin has darker moments or for when example he shuts the doors on the Separatist Leaders. ROTJ and Prequels made Imperial March his theme - not Empire Strikes Back especially considering that the Empire Strikes Back was trying to do something completely different with the Imperial March. The Imperial March is the Empire's theme but one of its leitmotif's is also Vader's theme. That's the way I would put it.

I think Vader was number 2 or maybe even number 3 in the Organization. Grand Moff Tarkin was on the same level or higher up than Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope. He speaks to him like he was in a higher position and sometimes kind of talked down to Vader in some scenes IMO. Telling him his plan "had better work" and he was taking a big risk in listening to him. And also he ordered him to release the guy that he was strangling with his force powers after he was putting down the force and said "his sad devotion to that ancient religion hadn't helped them find the Death Star plans". Vader was clearly more powerful than Tarkin but he probably outranked him.
@ultra_vires
@ultra_vires 2 жыл бұрын
@@STONESGAM Only higher up in his particular jurisdiction. The Death Star was Moff Tarkin's project and he had complete authority from the Emperor over matters concerning it. He and Vader happened to cross paths because of their respective assignments, therefore it's not an issue of who outranks the other, merely they are in charge of their own separate goals. If the scenario was jedi/rebel hunting or matters of the Emperor's security, Vader would be very much in charge. His attendance at the Death Star was because of his pursuit of Leia and the stolen plans, as such that doesn't mean he outranks Tarkin just because he turned up, Tarkin had a direct mandate that made him senior on Death Star matters.

Do you see how this scene is genius ? Vader is way taller and larger than the Emperor, we see it when they're both in the image. Yet, during their conversation, the high angle is minimal when showing the Emperor, he never looks small, but he is the only person fully shown in the frame, we see feet behind, and he has space before him, nothing stand before him. Vader, is filmed down his neck, we don't fully see his large shoulders, the camera angle is flat so he does not look that tall, also there are other people in his frame, he is one amongst others, he is not unique anymore. The cinematography here diminish intentionally Vader's dominance, we see the size difference between the two, but we never feel it.

The appearance of the Emperor is the expression of pure absolute power: No loud talking, no fancy suits, no jewellery, and obviously no weapons. None of this stuff is necessary for this man. His whole appearance cleary states that he has the absolute power and the absolute control about everything, he does not need to demonstrate or prove anything at all to anyone, no specific signs of any rank, an appearance not like a military but like a religious leader who has nothing to fear at all.

And this very point is why I thought it was a bad idea to make him a light saber wielding warrior in the prequels. In this movie he basically mocks light sabers as the weapon of a Jedi when talking to Luke, like it’s beneath him. Neither him nor Yoda ever needed to be light saber warriors and there’s nothing in the original trilogy that lets on that they would have ever been.
@oliver4953
@oliver4953 2 жыл бұрын
@@amostlyreasonableguy I totally agree - by showing the emperor as a lightsaber swinging fighter, they made him much smaller, much less powerful and much less frightening. In the old movies he talks about a light saber as if it is a toy of younger kids, no danger to him at all - they should have kept the mystery of the emperor instead of ruining that powerful aura by portraying him as someone who needs to jump around fighting with a light saber.

Emperor Palpatine; successfully conquered the galaxy and maintained order for 20 years, died because he didn't foresee that his own apprentice would betray him. David Prowse’s acting never gets enough credit, but just with his subtle movements he gets across the greater emotionality of Vader’s role in Empire and Return of the Jedi. Just the way his head moves when the Emperor says ‘I sense you wish to continue your search for young Skywalker,’ says so much. It’s like a combination of ‘I’m giving too much away, this guy sees everything…he knows I’m conflicted about my son,’ to ‘How DO I feel about my son?’ And much more. Prowse is really the forgotten man when we discuss the actors to play Vader, and he deserves way more credit for helping define one of the most iconic characters in the history of film when we never see his face or even hear his voice.

@Tom Ford I never said Prowse was the MAIN reason. James Earl Jones is like 90% of why Darth Vader resonated the way he did, but everyone knows that and says so. Prowse never gets any respect, and when people show clips of his actual voice during the filming, it’s to mock him and point out how much Jones added (which again, he DID). But Prowse deserves a LOT more credit than he ever received during his lifetime. Especially because in the first movie he’s just playing a hulking Frankenstein’s Monster with little character of his own. In Empire and Return of the Jedi, Vader becomes a fuller character who has his own arc and is more than just a monster in a leather suit. Jones of COURSE rose to the occasion to make Vader the deeper character of ESB and ROTJ, but Prowse did too. And you see it in moments like this and later when Luke and Vader meet to discuss his surrender. Prowse just carries him much more heavily in this film as Vader is being pulled toward choices (between Luke and the Emperor) he doesn’t feel capable of making.

David Cannon Still, Mace theoretically COULD have killed Palpatine. He is a master of Vaapad, which is one of the most powerful lightsaber forms in existence. @@shogun2215 trust me, it’s not the same. It was literally the first time everyone was introduced to the emperor. It’s not like now where you can tell your kids or grandkids when they see episode I for the first time that this guy is evil when he’s being introduced as a mere senator as opposed to the man he becomes that even Vader kneels to in his presence. Starting with the prequels you see his progression to the man who rules the galaxy but back in 83, we see the man that is merely mentioned and you see only an brief holographic image of and wonder just who he is and how powerful must he be that Vader, as powerful as he is, kneels before him and obeys him without question. It’s the aura of mystery that we are shown at the end when he starts blasting Luke with lightning that we think “oh, now I see why Vader takes orders from him”.

The Acolytes behind the Emperor always made an impression on me as a kid. True evil is not shouting, fighting or screaming, but cold dark tired and wasting away. They are full of hopelessness and unhealthiness - artificial, twisted and without passion. The Emperor surrounds himself with those devoted to a silent and hopeless purpose. This scene is just, amazing. Think about it. At this point in time (70’s and 80’s) all we knew was the Darth Vader was this ruthless villain. Then at the beginning of Jedi, he says “the Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.” Which instantly sets Palpatine’s character. Then this scene happens, and the sudden music change from imperial March to Darth Sidious music is genius. It really sets the tone. And besides having a LOT more stormtroopers around the ship really set the stage too. This scene just invites fear into a viewers heart, especially back in the that time period.

What freaks me out about Palpatine is that while Vader is right in saying he’s not as forgiving, he puts on the ILLUSION of mercy. In reality, he can make someone suffer even more than a force-choke from Vader. Vader will just kill you, but Palpatine? Palpatine will torture you, break you, and even when you think he’s going to kill you when you give him what he wants, he might still consider you a plaything he has use for, thus making you endure more and more pain until your heart finally gives out.
