The End of An Era? 60009 Union of South Africa Plus 70000 Britannia 7th March 2020

In this video we capture what could potentially be the end of an era for mainline steam. We see 60009 Union of South Africa on what could be her final rail tour before potential retirement. In this video we capture her at Slitting Mill and Goldthorpe.

I saw No.9 regularly when I was a youngster in the 1950s/60s living in Glasgow, then Perth and back to Glasgow, plus years of holiday travel to Aberdeenshire; I didn't think then that I would be seeing her still strutting her stuff 60 years on! Thanks for this memory!

I have been waiting for this, but didn't expect it so soon. Absolutely fantastic Cameron, and I must compliment you on the credits at the end...(and I DO NOT mean me and Dodge). You paid a wonderful tribute to the A4, and I was choked. The reason for that Cameron, is, I have been watching 60009 since the 1950's, so to me, it was a sad day to think it would be the last time to see her on the main line. Thank your Dad for his footage as well, together the both of you have produced an emotional video. Well done the both you...and thank you.

Like Dave Cooper I to used to see a lot of her passing St Margarets loco shed(64A) and Haymarket(64B) in Edinburgh,she has been a real star always acknowleging those who come out to see her which is a great credit to her crew.It is a sad day for us old yins but I thought someone mentioned that she was doing something in Scotland,let's hope saw.Thanks for the terrific clips.

Thanks Robert! Certainly was a sad day :( Must've been brilliant to see her running back in the steam days. There was a rumour that she was supposedly going to do a farewell tour in Scotland but now unfortunately due to the Coronavirus, this isn't possible :(

Her owner sayd that, at the end of her current boiler ticket she would be placed on static display. In other words, until 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley has finished its current overhaul, we have no operational A4 at all.

@@steventhornton4716 Bittern? No, she last ran in 2014 I think. She is currently on static display in Margate inside that shed Hornby owns. They have a few locos on display there and Bittern is one of them.

She’s due to be withdrawn from service on 22nd April so just over a months time. She’s allegedly due to haul at four to Carlisle on 28th March so fingers crossed she can haul that tour🤞
