Another tip: excercise or walk a bit before going to sleep. Muscles are warmed up, and keep you warm, and no extra costs involved 😊 Also: beanie, gloves, a better down (!) sleeping bag.

I think the quality and rating of the sleeping bag is very important. I have slept in the open, with snow falling, and been perfectly comfy in my sleeping bag.

Another nice video. To prevent cold rising up from the ground I use an extra piece of plastic before I put up the tent (most tent groundsheets are not fully 100% waterproof) and a good sleeping-bag with proper insulation. It weights a bit more but a good night sleep is worth the extra effort.
@ElizabethHoefkens8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment! And that is a good tip as plastic is very light! And yes I indeed need to look at my sleeping bag as mine is light but toooo thin 😅 I do prefer a warm night indeed!

Well the estimates vary but you loose somewhere between 30% - 45% of your body heat through your head and neck, so wear a beanie and possibly even a scarf when you sleep. You can also pull the beanie over your eyes in the early morning to help you sleep. Beyond that, I wear a good marino wool base layer and marino wool socks. And it that is not enough, I'll pull on my leg and arm warmers plus a fleece.
@ElizabethHoefkens8 ай бұрын
Thank you! Very helpful tips! A beanie and scarf sound like a comfy and warm plan. And I will definitely look into these wool layers! Thanks 😊

You only need to know two words Silk Merino. It costs a bit however I have yet to find anything better than Silk Merino base layers. Buy two tops as you will find yourself wearing them quite frequently. They are also very lightweight and antibacterial. Living in Scotland with high humidity and low temperatures makes for a challenging environment to cycle in. Finding gear that works is an expensive trial and error process.

Thanks for your reaction! That sounds like an interesting material I will look into that! A good night of sleep is worth something in my opinion 😊

Elizabeth, I have many question for you. 1. Are you cycling on the left side? 2. How can you find out about the cycling regulation? 3. Will the authorities reprimand you when you commit a violation?

Hello! Thanks for your comment. 1. No I mostly bike on the right side.😊 And about questions 2 and 3 I'm not sure if I understand these questions.

Hi Elizabeth, first a question. What were the minimum temeratures you encountered during the night?
@ElizabethHoefkens8 ай бұрын
Hi! Well I guess for some the temperatures aren't that low (I feel cold very quickly 😅) but I think the nights were between 9-12 degrees.
@EwaldJansen-w6g8 ай бұрын
@@ElizabethHoefkens I use a matras with an R-value of 3,8. The R-value is an indicator for isulation. I also use a down sleeping bag with a conform temperature of 5 C. This keeps me warm. Dont need no extra clothing.
@ElizabethHoefkens8 ай бұрын
@@EwaldJansen-w6g Thanks for your comment! I didn't know about this R-value so I learned something new 😊 I think indeed if I have a better matras and sleeping bag I will be much(!) warmer already. Thanks again!
@RViscara8 ай бұрын
The reason you were so cold is you used the wrong type of sleeping mat. The one you used is from decathlon and it is a good one but it’s not made for cold weather. You needed one with a higher “R” value to keep you insulated and warm from the cold ground. Hope this helps you sleep better.
@ElizabethHoefkens8 ай бұрын

@@ElizabethHoefkens also a warm bottle of water like a hot water bottle between your legs when you go to bed can keep you warm . Be sure to wear a hat also if cold while sleeping.

Thank you for your tips!! It is really helpful! In my later trip I indeed used hot water bottles to keep myself warm but they (obviously) didn’t stay warm the whole night which meant that I woke sometimes up in the middle of the night due to the cold 🥶😅
