The distinctive yellow booths were often dirty, but useful for a quick call. Some called their distant relatives, the emergency call, or their secret love. In 1881, the first telephone booth was in Berlin. In the 1990s, there were over 160,000 throughout Germany. In the age of mobile communications, the last stations are now being switched off.
