RTD deserves immense credit for taking the show out of its grave and rejuvenating it for modern audiences. I’ve always been a bit biased towards Moffat’s series, but the RTD era is, without a doubt, the golden age of the show for most people, and the 2009 specials are a well earned victory lap.

I kind of like the idea of Christina as a dark reflection of a 10th Doctor companion or even Ten himself. If you look back at Ten's companions, they were all deeply caring people who - while not always as knowledgeable as him - kept Ten's more vain, arrogant, and vengeful tendencies in check (some better than others). Whenever he starts to go too far, they're the first person to call him out on it. Christina is the opposite of that, she's got all of the drive for adventure and she's arguably far more equipped for it than the previous 3 companions, but she lacks the compassion, and would therefore simply indulge The Doctor's worse tendencies. She does stuff not to help people, but purely because it's fun and she's bored and lonely, and as such she acts almost as the devil on his shoulder. She loves the adventure and the thrill just as much as he does, but cares far less about helping other people. She's not evil - just a bit amoral, but The Doctor still actively chose to enable a self-centred, millionaire thief by giving her a flying bus, which seems very irresponsible, and is another early warning sign of The Doctor's growing arrogance and lack of regard for the consequences of his own actions in the absence of a moral companion. I think it's quite fitting that the following episode is when The Doctor falls to his lowest, with THAT episode's companion being the one to correct the course. If we look at the Specials as a 4 part classical tragedy of the vainglorious Doctor being taught a lesson, narratively each of the first two companions facilitate his fall, while the latter two punish him for it and teach him the lesson, with the lesson basically being "doing the right thing is not always easy". Jackson inadvertently encouraged The Doctor to do the right thing for the gratitude and the glory, while Christina encouraged him to do it for the thrill, which lead to his fall during his joyride to Bowie Base 1. Then, Adelaide teaches him the cost of betraying his duty, and Wilf necessitates that The Doctor follow her example to show he learnt his lesson. It's all very poetic, and I feel like Christina DOES earn her place as a tipping point on The Doctor's moral decline towards the Time Lord Victorious, even if her episode itself is mostly skippable.

I loved how big the finale was in main stream as well, as we had treats like the iconic BBC One ident and David's narration on the broadcast of his last episode, David appearing on loads of TV shows like QI and Graham Norton, and we even had John Barrowman make a song entitled " The Doctor and I" for the occasion. It was also a big year for me as well personally as I was finishing GCSEs in secondary school just before series 5 started, so it was fitting that my year group were going out with the incarnation that made me feel cool to wear my blazer-shirt-tie school uniform and pretend to be the Doctor. Even my year 11 prefect tie was my personal equivalent of David's swirly tie he wore for the regeneration and carried forward to the raggedy Doctor's costume.

I grew up both the RTD and Moffat era, but looking back I'm definitely more nostalgic towards the RTD era. It's just a feel good emotional one. The Moffat one is more grand and big, but 9th and 10th Doctor feel more grounded and comforting for some reason. All the characters were well developed and felt more humane, the companions were more than just spunky young attractive women.

To be fair, the Moffat era was very ambitious in what it tried to do with River Song and her arc, I think that if you watch her final appearance and then the Silence in the Library back-to-back that they make for an amazing watch (I know that the Vashta Nerada episode was in the R.T.D. era, but it was a Moffat episode).
@iusedtowrite6667
@iusedtowrite6667 3 жыл бұрын
@@-haclong2366 I think at times it was too ambitious, I guess. It needed to be a bit more grounded. Moffat's era reminds moe of a big summer blockbuster which you can watch once, have fun and then move on with life. Where RTd's era is more like that feel good movie you still re-watch. I know it's sounds biased and maybe it might be.

I think something that deffo helped with the Doctor's arc in this and is a through line is the value of normal lives and ordinary people. In The Next Doctor we find out that "The Doctor" is actually Jackson Lake. An ordinary mane who came to London for the holiday season and who suffered an unimaginable loss of his wife being killed and his son being taken but who in his grief became a hero saving all the ordinary lives of the people in London. In Planet Of The Dead my fave scene is always the one on the bus where The Doctor talks to all of the passengers and asks them where they were going when they got on the bus and who and what was waiting for them. How he kept their spirits up by reminding them about how beautiful those things are and how yeah that alien planet looks pretty but it has nothing that equals to the value of family and food and homes. In Waters Of Mars he is put in his place over how he calls Yuri and Mia "little people" and how they have value. It's not about Adelaide and the legacy she creates but them as well. How in changing history he added more value to their lives despite him not seeing them as important. And finally in End Of Time it's fitting that The Doctor dies saving Wilf. Pure of heart, adorable, ordinary Wilf. And how in the Doctor's farewell tour he does small things to improve the lives of his past companions. They may not make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things but they are that final gesture of love. I also love how The Doctor regenerates alone in the TARDIS. No companion or anything. Just him.

I think a lot of people forget that to the 10th doctor, this was his final regeneration, he was about to have his 13th regeneration, for someone in canon who didn't live for hundreds of years it'd feel like wasted time, not only had his time as this incarnation been short, but his life in general was shorter than it could have been, he knew death was certain after that, no second chances.

It wasn’t until they decided to retcon that, also the fake out at journey’s end shouldn’t count since he didn’t change bodies. Honestly that should’ve been the regeneration episode so that Davros would have to deal with a nearly immortal Matt Smith, and we wouldn’t get the end of time. I hated the whining about living too long, when by timelord standards, he is more like a teenager. Plus only 6 years, and I refuse to believe he was 900-906 when he was Tennant since he was already 900 when he was Colin Baker. Maybe he lied about his age.

At the end of The Waters of Mars, Mia and Yuri sort of ran off. And the Doctor did warn them that water waits, meaning any one of them could be infected. Maybe not in the form of a televised episode, but it'd be cool to see that Yuri and Mia were actually infected, with the Doctor needing to somehow prevent it from spreading across earth

Waters of Mars absolutely TERRIFIED me when I first watched it. Literally made me cry hahaha. I also didn't mind Michelle Ryan's character or episode that much. I actually liked that she was genuinely a bit troublesome/criminal rather than their being some secret "good" reason she was stealing. Made her fun/different. The episode was safe but not terrible in my opinion. It's a testament to Russell T Davies and the cast that even the weaker episodes of the 2005-2009 era were better than the episodes considered "stronger" in Smith/Capaldi/Whittaker's era. I really hope with RTD's return he can recapture some of that magic.

Tbh I think people are overdramatic in hating Tens regeneration. From a character POV this is his first time really feeling like "The Doctor" in a long time properly and he feels like he's in his second prime. If someone came up to you and said "lol sorry bro time to change your entire personality but it'll still be 'you'" would you respond nicely? The sudden change from reluctance to being fine with it after regenerating not only fits Smiths Doctor specifically but also makes sense in regards to the character overall. Its like when you snap out of a bad mood all of the sudden, the scrambling of his brain probably made him "forget" why he was sad (not literally but you know what I mean if you've ever been really sad or depressed before).

14:31 I'd like to say one: a lot of the astronauts accents kinda go in and out. Andrew is from the U.S, yet in the scenes where we do hear him speak, he tends to sound more British than American. Sterri is German, yet her accent goes in and out, with her sounding German in some scenes and sounding british in others. Obviously, this isn't the biggest issue ever, and as far as I can remember the other character's voices held up pretty well, but its a little immersion breaking when some of the characters can't even keep their accents up

I always felt a bit lukewarm about the series after Matt Smith came in. It seemed like the show stopped taking itself seriously for a while, and it was a little sad. I mean, Doctor Who had comedic moments before. But after The writer for 9&10 left, it kinda felt like it was all too played up and goofy. It was a real tension killer. It felt like the main character didn’t even take the situations seriously half the time, even when he didn’t have a clear way out of it yet. It’s one thing to start in with the goofiness when he has a eureka moment, but when you’re in an ‘oh shit’ situation, it really kills the mood. Glad they fixed that later though. Even for a little while.

Bc if I remember u said u liked his writing in doctor who! Now I know series 6 & especially 7 were pushing mediocrity series 5 & the entire 12th doctors run was great (minus Hell Bent) so far this year I’ve completed my modern doctor who rewatch all the way through Capaldi’s exit (which is actually where I stopped originally Bc I just didn’t have a means to continue watching via streaming & such) so I have yet to actually view the chibnall era but have been kept up w what’s going on and I agree that that’s taken it so far into a negative director however I wouldn’t say Moffat was bad even if he was a little bit of a step down after RTD

I’d say series 5 is bordering great but overall just good series 6 was at times great but overall was just ok & series 7 was a mess sometimes enjoyable but still a mess. Series 8 was great series 9 was cool until hell bent kinda ruined what it was building up to & series 10 was again good overall I’d say Moffat s best seasons where his first & last.
