I loved Chekhov's gravity boots! At the beginning, Rocket talks about trying out new grav boots as why he's walking on the ceiling, and then the Evolutionary explains how he manipulates gravity to be powerful much later. Rocket turning on the grav boots at the end to cancel out the effect was such an "ah ha!" moment for me.

Agreed I thought that was awesome. It’s such a simple solution to an otherwise OP power, and without it the High Evolutionary has nothing on Rocket. Plus it’s just cool that Rocket is making his own gravity boots. Also it reminds me of Ratchet and Clank lol, which is great because Iron Man calls Rocket “Ratchet” in Endgame.

Many Marvel movies feature heroes that create their own villains. This one has a villain that creates a hero. And then, because that hero has something that he himself doesn't have - the capacity to love, one might even say a soul - he can't stand his existence and tries to destroy him. And gets his face ripped off for his trouble. A satisfying change, I thought.

Definitely agree that the soundtrack took me out a little bit this time, it does feel like including somewhat more current music means this movie loses a certain sense of identity compared to the other two. On further thought I'm okay with it though, I think it's meant to signify Star-Lord moving away from the trauma that's kept him away from Earth for so long/him handing over Guardians leadership to Rocket. Essentially, the 70's/80's music that we've associated with the Guardians... isn't really a Guardians thing? It's a Peter Quill thing, because that's the time period he's basically been stuck in. Expanding the music lineup feels like him moving on with his life, and also that leadership is transferring to Rocket, who doesn't have the same hang-ups?

Everybody's too hard on Endgame Starlord. The dude had just reached the end conclusion of his character arc by killing Gamora, symbolically learning to let go like he couldn't with his mom, and at the moment that character actualization happens, Thanos snaps his fingers and goes "Haha jk, you don't get closure." He's left in an unstable and reflexively immature state as he has to grapple with the fact that he made the choice to kill the woman he loved to save the universe, and acted on that choice, but the universe wasn't saved, and the only hope left for Starlord was that Gamora was still alive. All that hope comes crashing down in a single moment. And he lashes out in anger. Unwittingly dooming everyone.

At first, I thought the needle drops were a bit jarring too. Jumping around in eras of music. But then, halfway through the movie I realized the songs were chosen for their themes and meaning rather than the era necessarily. A LOT of the songs deal with alienation and reaching out for human connection and compassion. Which, is one of the big themes of the film and where the Guardians are all at in their personal journeys.

Star Lord is an expert at fighting villains stronger than him. He beat Ronan with the Power Stone and Ego the Living Planet. Dr Strange tricks Dormammu with the Time Stone, but he can’t use that since it’s what Thanos wants. Iron Man never fought anyone who was significantly more powerful than him. Thor, Hulk, Wanda and Vision were there to fight Ultron.

I felt the same way about the needledrops in this one. In the other two, the use of music seemed more natural - I think of Vol. 1 when they're flying into Knowhere. "Moonage Daydream" is already quietly playing in the background, and as they approach and fly through the city, they dial up the volume and let the music dominate the sound as you take in the visuals. There was much more switching between diegetic to non-diegetic music. And music was something that the characters used to relate to and understand each other, and how Peter expressed himself. In Vol. 3 they really felt more like Needledrops™. They were playing the song just to play the song - not as seemless or as tied to the story as it was in the other two volumes. This was really my ONLY complaint about the movie, I really loved it.

I think the only exceptions to this would be the first song, the second to last song and the song in the first after credits scene. Creep by Raidohead fits Rocket as a character so perfectly. It fits so well with his alienation and his perception of himself as some imperfect monster due to what was done to him by the High Evolutionary. Plus it fits the defeated and downbeat mood of the team, and particularly quill, after the loss of their gamora, and quill’s spiral into a drunken stooper. Dog days are over by Florence + The Machine, meanwhile, is perfect for the ending. It represents the trauma all of the characters have been through and how they’re finally healing from it. And it matches the cathartic yet bittersweet feeling of seeing the classic team go their separate ways and onto new, better things. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Dog Days is the first song in these soundtracks to be from the 2000s and not the 70s, 80s or 90s. It symbolises the start of a new era for the guardians team, and a new era for leaving members like Quill, Drax, Gamora and Mantis. Come and get your love, admittedly isn’t as deep as the other two, but it was not only a nice callback to the first film, but hearing new leader rocket play one of the first songs played by old team leader Starlord to the new guardians team was a great coming full circle moment.

Really think about this.... At the beginning Drax says he wants to "kill everyone" and Star Lord says "we kill no one" Drax says "we'll kill one guy, one really pathetic guy with no friends", which Star Lord says is "just making it sad.." Okay? Later Quill sees what the High Evolutionary did to Rocket and he says "Kill 'em all" But Groot, who's proxy for Rocket's moral compass, as his best friend, saves Adam Warlock because "Everyone deserves a second chance." Partially exemplified in Rocket's decision not to kill the High Evolutionary (happens to be one really pathetic guy with no friends) and unlike Peter, Rocket didn't see what he did, he experienced it, it was done to him, and he still showed mercy. James Gunn has now said repeatedly that Rocket Raccoon is the stealth protagonist of the series. All that is to say the whole point of that line, in a way, is that Rocket is more of a hero than Star Lord is.

I thought it would be the plot of Thor 4, with him teaming up with the Guardians (since Gunn and Waititi are kind of chummy), and the whole movie was just that first 20 minutes, with him just figuring his shit out on adventures. It would also give us a preview of the new status quo, like Rocket being the only Guardian that wasn't snapped, and Nebula joining the team after Endgame. Pick up that thread of Peter being overshadowed by Thor's power (but way more competent otherwise). Thor: Asgardian of the Galaxy! It was right there!

I like a good team fight too. Honor Amongst Thieve was great. (You need to talk about that movie!) GOTG 3 had some good team moments. Of what I've seen of James Gunn he has two styles or variations. There is his rated R I can do whatever I want style. And his PG13 I guess I should dial it back a bit style. One does not feel like a knock off of the other. His R stuff is hilarious, but often a little too crass. His PG13 stuff seems more heartfelt, a little schmaltzy, but ultimately more memorable for me. He is a great film maker in my book. That said, I haven't seen anything that feels like a Superman movie, and it might be that he hasn't done one yet, and it's gonna require the right actor. I'm skeptical.

Iron Man 2 is objectively a more developed movie than Endgame, because Endgame was basically a victory lap full of chopped up fan service. I agree with pretty much everything y'all said in this one. Really enjoyed the movie, but I agree that the music did not seem as seamlessly integrated into the scenes and movie as a whole as the two prior films. My main bone I have to pick is that I was so excited that they included We Care a Lot by Faith No More, I feel like it's the most Guardians of the Galaxy song that I can think of out of all the songs ever sang, but they used it at a really weird time that didn't seem fitting and they ended the song right before they said the line "we're out to save the world", which I thought was a weird choice. No person or distraction is going to get between them and saving their friend. You've even got the entire planet filled with people that was set to blow up, and I was thinking that they'd save the planet and Rocket in just the nick of time, like most other Marvel movies. 7:09 and it’s a little bit worrying that this 1 time bad guy comes over as more of a threat than the big bad the MCU is building up to. I mean I just can’t buy Kang as this massive danger to everything, a character that’s meant to have killed all the Avengers at one point or another, and I don’t know what it is that just isn’t working? Maybe it’s the actor is wrong for the role? Maybe it’s the writing that’s making the actor seem not menacing or maybe it’s just the wrong character to be this massive multi film build up problem, it could also be all of the above, maybe they should use Kang as a repeat villain that every so often he shows up behind another problem, last time it was Antman then in a few years he shows up in the Loki show as his problem then he shows up fighting the Avengers and actually kills off (permanently) one or even two of them before been beaten this shows that just because he got beaten dosnt mean he isn’t dangerous maybe have a show that he is the villain of where he wins, the hero of that show is like “”we will die before we let you win”” and Kang is like “”let me win? I already have I was only here to make sure that X happened and it has I’ve already got what I wanted and why would I want to kill you? You still have so much work to do for me”” then he disappears into a time portal. I think that marvel has gotten to into the idea of needing the next Thanos level threat but that’s not how comics work it can be ages before a big crossover event happens and in the meantime it’s just business as usual.
