Imagine not being happy with the fact that your baby is happy, healthy and SAFE and instead being concerned over something as goddamn trivial as eye color. It's one thing to be worried about your kids skin color if you FEAR that they will face colorism. My parents had the Talk with me and my siblings that we would be treated different due to our skin color and that we were beautiful and strong no matter what white western ideals existed in our midwestern suburb. THAT'S IT. When my sister complained that her hair wasn't "pretty like theirs" we'd watch documentaries on African and mixed hair. When I complained that I didn't have light eyes like my brother (he's got the hazel eyes and freckles I want), my mom made me sit down and watch movies staring women without blue or green eyes. This really triggered me. Like f*k these parents for real. My mom has always told me I had ugly eyes. Her eyes are blue and she calls mine "an ugly puke green color". My eyes are hazel, a combo of green and brown, and I've always felt incredibly ugly because of her. Even when friends commented that they liked my eye color or thought it was cool, I still felt ashamed because our mother's words hurt us deeper. So Nova is DEFINITELY going to see their video and hear her mother's words and I'm sure her mother will remind her or let it slip that her eyes aren't pretty.

I came across them, and watched a Christmas video, when her husband made a comment about being his watch, and poor people; so was not amused. I decided to give them one more try until the colorism video even though we come from a multicultural family where we have family members who, are light to very dark, and beautiful babies, green, blue, brown, hazel, gray. And some of the people are dark and have these color eyes,and some are light more light then her, and have brown eyes. That was the last straw; I told my nieces, and nephews who don’t understand they cannot watch them any more, and unsubscribed from them those who could understand like my twin who is light, and has blond hair, and brown hair, her kids are light, my kids, are light and don’t look like there is any black in them do to my family being multiracial, but my they don’t get these people they said love, and embrace your race, if you have colorism you hate who you are and need therapy to love yourself. The sad thing is a lot of biracial kids attempted suicide, or start drugs my cousin did that’s how; I know do to colorism from there white in laws, or there parents and eventually braced who they where because of us, and letting them know there beautiful, and those who put colorism in your head need Jesus, and need self love. These people are weird.

the comments about the baby’s eyes gives the same energy as the comment “good hair.” It stems from the ideal that straight and or loosely curly hair is far more attractive than kinky coiled hair that most black people have. As a black woman I’ve come across plenty of family members and other black people who have thrown out comments about wishing their kids had “good hair” or that they were blessed to have “good hair” or that their mixed children have “good hair” or even that I didn’t have good hair. It’s disheartening to hear and shameful. If you’re reading this and you have kinky coiled hair just know that it’s absolutely as gorgeous as any other hair type. Whether you have long, short, bald, wavy, curly, coiled, black, blonde, red, hell even green hair, you’re gorgeous!!

My wife’s mother would constantly talk about her own weight and express insecurities surrounding that. And would even talk about her growing daughters weight along with her father. When her dad died she got a lawyer to release her daughters 50k inheritance and spent it mostly on plastic surgery. She would call her daughter sensitive when she got upset about a comment. She was of course shocked to find out, years later, that her daughter had developed an ED. My wife still struggles with body issues despite weighing a healthy yet still underweight for her height 90 lbs. The hardest thing was having to see her wage the internal battle of wanting to feel beautiful during pregnancy and feeling not just that she wasn’t but guilty for seeing herself that way. She’s never judgmental of others. Despite my admittedly biased opinion that she is conventionally extremely beautiful. And yet chose to marry me.. a 5’4 dork that plays Pokémon and reads fantasy novels. So she’s not shallow. But somehow she just cannot see herself as beautiful. So for that, and other reason, I do not talk to her mother.

If i watched my baby videos and my mom was like," I hoped you weren't brown eyed, I wish you had pretty eyes " I'd be furious! I'm pale as all get out but they really sounded really sad that they wanted a lighter and a blue eyed baby made me feel so bad for baby Nova. I can understand they can still love her, but those comments can really hurt her in the future, as my grandma made me feel bad as a kid cause I "didn't have pretty blue eyes like your mommy". Can't imagine how I'd feel getting that comment. I hope she knows she is adorable and beautiful no matter what!

I’m a hella light skinned First Nations woman, when I was born my mom couldn’t care less that I was pale, she was just so happy I was born healthy (she had a high risk pregnancy and lost my twin early on in the pregnancy) my dad was just looking at me in awe, and couldn’t let me go. His family would later go on to mention how I got their “good genes” because I inherited the pale skin from their side. I was born with blue eyes, I actually have eyes that change colours, they range from Bright green to gold depending on the day. My skin colour is a joke in my family. I have issues with how pale I am but I’ve been working through it. I’m First Nations, but I’ve been called a fake by others from other tribes because I’m pale… I couldn’t imagine my parents commenting on my looks as a new born. I was alive and healthy that’s all that mattered.

Thanks for teaching us about colorism. I live in Africa (Kenya) and I didn't know about that. But, here we have dark, chocolate, brown, and yellow. It goes without saying that the 'yellow' girls/ guys are more 'good looking.’ It's so sad, people are out here bleaching to look pretty. Most of these bleaching agents have a lot of side effects, some lead to death.

Oh my god, the way they talked about their beautiful little girl when she was born… absolutely devastating… I am mixed and my mothers’ family is very lighted skinned for the most part. I’ve definitely heard them say some very problematic things. I’ll never ever ever ever accept colorist attitudes. The self loathing behind it is sad, but to say that kind of stuff about your baby girl. Disgusting. The white side of my family and the (mostly white) kids I went to school with always made me feel so ugly and lesser growing up. To this day I’m still having to work through the pain of being treated that way by my own family because it influenced my developing mind in so many ways. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Side note, those two seem really unintelligent. It’s shocking.

The colorist segment made me so sad. Colorism exists in my family and it was so difficult to grow up being noticeably darker than my cousins. I always wished I had my mom's hazel eyes and I've expressed that wish for years. But my mom has always told me that my brown eyes are beautiful and that I was gorgeous in my own skin. Even with my mom telling me I was beautiful all the time just the way I was, I was still insecure growing up. I can't imagine what Nova will feel with a mom who may not think she's beautiful because of her skin and the color of her eyes.
@marandaportillo13132 жыл бұрын
Do you feel their's anything more your mom could have done to make you feel better about having brown eyes? I ask cuz my daughters have brown eyes and have said before they wish they had my blue eyes, I respond pretty much the same as your mom did. Just trying to reassure them that brown eyes are also beautiful and they should love themselves just the way they are.

I liked your comments, I would only add something about how as a nonPOC person there are many many layers to the issue of inherent colorism within the POC community, that obviously she has been raised in a culture she didn't choose and how we all have to face our own inherited negative and harmful beliefs. She is a victim to a racist system, HOWEVER- she is an adult and has to take responsibility for self-reflection and evaluation. Now, these issues are veeeeery very deep, complicated, nuanced, and ultimately a topic better addressed by members of the POC community. So, I'd just add maybe some quotes from POC creators, or links to videos where those voices are represented. It is up to allies to platform impacted communities when discussing issues they experience and the ally doesn't. Thanks for the video and your effort- it gives me much to think about and I appreciate the work you put into making such high-quality content!
