You ought to have turned yourself up a piloted drift to knock those guides in Dom, the way you did it can burr over the top of the guide bore which will then require reaming. Another thing, make sure you use a heavy grade of strictly mineral engine oil such as the old 'classic' 20W50 and choose one with a high level of zinc (ZDDP) additive in it which is necessary to prevent scuffing between the cams and followers on the older older flat tappet engines. Another great show and another great project, I've built plenty of old Triumphs and Beez engines in my time and it's great to watch you and John doing this rebuild, thanks guys, Roland, HT Racing Ltd

Great progress guys. One thing I noticed though. Last week Dom you ground in the valves, this week you put new valve guides on the head. Err, don't you think you've done that arse backwards? Now you can't guarantee whatsoever that the new valves are concentric with the valve seats. You should get those valves out and get the correct tool to cut the seats concentric with the new guides and lap the valves back in to the recut seats. If you don't do it now there's no guarantee whatsoever that you will have any compression at all in either cylinder. Do it now before you have to take the head off again lol

@@samrodian919 I noticed that but then I thought maybe it was just edited the wrong way round. If you’re right then Dom, you should really recut the seats.

I too used such a socket set to repair a Triumph Herald . Such an easy engine to work on compared to a modern vehicle. The chassis was rusted to fu** , my mate’s father was a farmer / engineer who fabricated a new chassis for me at no cost to me! Later I had to remove the cylinder head to replace the valves . Two days later 23:33 at the farm we got it off by putting oil in the cylinders and turning the engine over with plugs in . Turned out that the plain unthreaded part of the stud was rusted solid into the head . British engineering at its worst. Currently I have an twelve year old Kia which has had a new alternator since new but nothing else apart routine from routine maintainance. Good job lads , I cannot wait until you get back to the Porsche.

I noticed that the exhaust cam wheel and probably the inlet cam wheel has three keyway slots whereas the OE ones that you took off will have had only one. The idea of three keyways instead of one allows you to get the valve timing more accurate than possible with one keyway. Therefore you may have to try the other keyways if you want to achieve best accuracy. If this is the case the cam wheel nuts and the oil pump will have to come off and you can only find TDC once the barrels and head are on. You will also need a timing disc to bolt onto the drive side of the crankshaft.
