The English Garden in Munich, Germany, is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world. The name refers to its English garden form of informal landscape, a style popular in England from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century.
In terms of area, it surpasses both New York's Central Park and London's Hyde Park. This popular spot draws locals and tourists alike. Its vast size (370 hectares or 910 acres), attractions like the Chinese Tower and Monopteros, beer gardens, relaxed atmosphere, and open meadows where nudists are permitted to sunbathe have made the English Garden famous worldwide.
Most visitors first head to the Eisbach River near the Haus der Kunst (House of Art), where they can watch fearless surfers riding the fast-flowing mountain river. These surfers perform tricks in the cold water year-round, drawing the attention of many spectators. Surfing here is truly risky, but it was legalized in the summer of 2010. However, the permit is limited to experienced surfers, who ride at their own risk. Swimming in the Eisbach River, however, is prohibited.
The English Garden is a paradise for sports enthusiasts: cyclists and runners train on its 78 kilometers of paths. In spring, summer, and autumn, you’ll find slackliners stretching their ropes between trees, frisbee players throwing their discs, and footballers gathering for a game.
The Kleinhesseloher See lake, on the northern edge of the park, offers both lively and serene spots. Although it’s not suitable for swimming, visitors can enjoy a lovely day on the water with a rowboat or pedal boat. Hundreds of people relax on its shores, not just in summer.
In the northern part of the park, you’ll often find groups practicing yoga or tai chi. Horse lovers will also be pleased, as the park offers a variety of riding trails and is home to a university equestrian school.
