One of the best and one of my favorite scenes from The English Patient, where Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas) tells the story from Herodotus - "Candaules tells Gyges..."

Katherine's decision to tell this story opposed to any other was very intentional, her gaze directly at Almasy. You know he was imagining gazing at Katherine without her clothes and that was exactly what Katherine wanted.

This is a veiled attempt at Catherine telling Almassy that she is romantically interested in him...right in front of her husband.

I read once that this was K’s warning to her husband that if he just took off, his husband identity would be toppled. (Resonated to the later scene where A claimed to be Ks husband) The silence was prob cuz all these Brits in North Africa were super tight as an inner circle and non of the stupid so everyone was digesting the story. G still left for work, which then basically fulfilled this prophecy. So G knew from the get go.

I think it was a warning from Katherine to her husband to stop exibithing her to the another men.. If you are used to exibith your wife , you may cause the interest and curiosity of another men about her=) That was the warning :-)
