Modern football wasn't born in 1863. The football culture and game we know today, with leagues, cup competitions, paying customers, paid players, playing almost identical rules to today's game started in Sheffield in the 1860's. By the end of the 1860's there were 49 organised clubs playing in Sheffield. It was a delegate from Sheffield that were invited down to London helping the English FA to agree the rules, nearly all the Sheffield rules were amalgamated into the code of play. What is strange is that the Cambridge University rules and the Sheffield rules were almost identical, so which came first? Suspect some graduates from Cambridge University were Sheffield based and returned to Sheffield with ideas. The success of the cup competitions held in Sheffield (The Yourdan and Cromwell cups) were the early inspiration behind the English FA starting the FA cup knockout competition. A Sheffield firm even manufactured the 1st ever FA cup. Don't believe me? Plenty of proof can be seen on the "Sheffield The Home of Football" KZbin channel.
