The Jehovah's Witnesses have a long history of false predictions and major changes in doctrine. The most significant though is how they changed their shunning policy!

I simply can't wrap my head around the idea of not talking to your parents, siblings, children, or other friends or family simply for them no longer believing in the faith or making a mistake. That's too horrific.

I’m 38 years old now and I’m from Newfoundland born and raised in this religion and I moved to Edmonton Alberta in 2006 and got married and had a baby boy and when I was 24 I got sucked back into this org and started going again. I was baptized in 2010 and a couple years later my now ex wife ran off on me for another man and eventually ended up leaving my boy with me too. I Had him 100% of the time and I had no help us there in Edmonton. Now over three years I had drifted away from the faith and my parents wanted me to go to court and get my son and move back home and I did! I gave us everything I had in Edmonton everything!! Only to move home in 2018 and because me and my son don’t go to the meetings we are also shunned too and it really hurts. I got remarried in 2021 and my parents didn’t even come to anything and that killed me! No one came to our wedding and my wife now is a beautiful inside and out and we have been and always will be happy together! We also have two more baby boys 3 and 5 months old now And I haven’t talked to either of my parents since the summer started and my oldest son now is 15 and they ignore him too! It’s not fair for my family and o he shunned by my family and friends all over religion!! Me and my wife are living clean moral lives and I just don’t get it!! It’s so sad how this religion is destroying so many family’s to be ripped apart and there’s nothing I can do about it

29:49 Yes, this happened all the time. I remember one such occasion when I was a kid when my mom recognized someone at the Kingdom Hall she hadn’t seen in a while. We walked up to her and my mom gave her a warm greeting to which the lady replied “I’m disfellowshipped”. My mom immediately averted her eyes from the lady and mumbled “oh” under her breath and quickly walked away. It was so horrible and awkward. I felt so bad for the lady and never forgot that even though I went on to shun as well. I was well trained (programmed) but gratefully woke up.

Wow Wally your content is just amazing. I always feel better after watching your videos. I was pressured into baptism by my family at 15 and then turned in by my diagnosed borderline mother and brother (2 witness rule) as going on a date with a worldly boy 2 years later. I was promptly sent a certified letter to meet with the committee to discuss. When I didn’t attend the meeting, I was promptly disfellowshipped. I lost everything - was kicked out of my home and had to work full time as soon as I graduated high school to support myself. I have lived with guilt, shame and judgement most of my life. I still see people in my community that I grew up with and they turn away, lower their eyes or look in pity. It impacted my self esteem and I dealt with severe anxiety, depression and PTSD from all of it. I am only beginning to truly understand the magnitude of my experiences and finally let this stuff go and heal. Your content has been a real life saver. I truly look forward to watching you - you are helping so many people with presenting the facts and also bringing some levity to these crazy practices. I wish I could do more to shed light for kids being forced into baptism - being marked by disfellowshipping truly impacted my life. If anyone knows how to get involved to shed light to lawmakers. I’m willing to share my own story to help save others of this horrible humiliation. Love to those that have gone through this. You are not alone. ♥️♥️♥️

The Millerite movement and chronology were influential. Nelson Barbour, who worked with CTRussell, was a Millerite who was still trying to work out the chronology. Darby and Dispensationalism was also a great influence. It's also worth considering that Fred Franz might've been on the austistic scale, and had his own ideas and reasonings (types, anti-types, fixations on words, etc).
@cygnustsp
@cygnustsp 2 ай бұрын
When I looked into a lot of these movements (Christadelphia really intrigued me) I found that the famous dispute between Russell and Barbour wasn't as Watchtower portrayed it. They made it seem like Barbour outright rejected the ransom; what he rejected was Russell's idea that if Jesus took his human body back he would have nullified the ransom. Barbour, like just about any other Christian, believed in the physical resurrection.

I've seen many anti-JW videos by ex-JWs, but I don't think I've ever seen a video that attempted to cover the timeline of the religion. I was never a JW, but I always thought Charles Taze Russell was the founder of the JWs. Technically, he wasn't. He founded Watch Tower, but it wasn't until Joseph F. Rutherford when the JWs that we know and loathe today came into existence. It's amazing that Russell, despite his faults, but a far more mellow religious leader than his successor.

My JW mom just stopped by to see me. It's been 25 years since I got df'd and she's never shunned me or treated me any different. From time to time she brings up changes in the organization. I'm kind of surprised she hasn't mentioned this "removed" nomenclature yet. Edit: some here are aware that I was technically df'd for refusing to stop associating with a df'd friend. It had been known that I had apostate leanings but that was the technicality they got on me because I hadn't been fellowshipping for almost 3 years. At my judicial committee I brought my df'd friend as my witness that we never see each other or speak to each other at all. The elders didn't think it was funny.

As a long time former member of the JW's for 55 years; I have periodically studied publications and articles written by the pre-1952 era of their organization. And I never remember coming across these clearly expressed feelings of both C.T. Russel and J. F. Rutherford on disfellowshipping and shunning. The focus was always on doctrinal understanding revealed. But since your video and dozens of others released here on YT, the REAL SENTIMENTS of the original founders was against this ostracizing, villifying; shunning and ignoring people who either sinned or differed in their views or understanding of scriptures. The average JW needs to watch this video and start thinking.

Two days ago I learned that my 90yo grandfather passed away and today I watched the service from Zoom. I haven't been a JW since ~2009 officially, but probably more than 5yrs before that. So I haven't had contact with my entire family in over 15yrs. I was happy to not make a fuss about not being an active JW, but my parents forced it to a head by calling the elders and I refused to talk to them, thus disassociating myself. The worst part in all of this is that my 90yo grandfather was my mentor, the one I respected more than anyone else in my life and I shared a great relationship with over the years and shared a lot of similar interests. I still remember him saying "unfortunately, if you continue down this path, we will have to cease to be friends". That was a deep cut. I've moved on, almost immediately, but to think that I lost my friendship with my grandfather and other family members because I no longer wanted to live according to their rules (which have been proven to change willy nilly), down right sucks

This is one of the best histories of the JW's I have come across, and there are quite a few good ones. probably made better because it has one particular focus. without a focus some histories tend to get a bit lost in the weeds. I'm hoping that Wally will do some companion histories along these lines. What I find striking amongst the many denial mechanisms that JW's have is their 'disinterest' (stemming from discomfort really) in the organisaton's history. They don't mind touching on it but try a deeper dive and they start looking for ways to disengage..

Wow, I’m glad you shared this so much. I always wanted to deep dive but this is the perfect platform for this. Also, I’m unsure if you know him but my favorite Sim content creators’ picture is a lot like yours. Nard Sims.

"Personally, I have never believed in the disfellowshipping doctrine, even though I have been a Jehovah's Witness for 50 years. To prove it, you can ask those who have been disfellowshipped; I have always greeted them secretly and loved them for who they are, regardless."

Wally this was great, choosing to go back to early Russell and roll forward. chronologically. Would be wonderful if you could do the same historical inventory focusing on the WTs evolving view on birthdays and Christmas. That may give insight into what happens next in regards to policy changes. Thx. 🙏

Great video ! It all comes back to How do we deal with separation ? God disfellowshipped Adam and Eve from the garden because of knowledge. I still have problems grappling my head around what that means. Jesus disfellowshipped Judas from the 12 when he dipped the bread with him and said “I will dip this bread into the dish. The man I give it to is the man who will turn against me.” John 13, 26-30. I can just imagine how that felt and how much resentment that seed grew in Judas heart. Paul and the guys after him kept up the practice over no matter consequences. BUT when reading 1. Kor.13 i understand that Gods ways are so much different !! Im thinking that its a good thing that JW are trying to change to the better, even thou it was money that pushed them to it (first in Norway). But I pray for greater understanding around the issue and that we understand that Love dont separate but unite.

21:11 that line we are not coerce is the same line used at annual meeting released last year. So they still use old old old old articles for information therefore reconsidering DF all together should be o the table.

Here are ten lessons learned from the video about the history and practices of disfellowshipping within the Jehovah's Witnesses: 1. **Origins and Evolution**: Jehovah's Witnesses originated in the late 1800s during the Second Great Awakening, a period of significant religious change in America. 2. **Initial Opposition to Shunning**: The movement's founder, Charles Taz Russell, initially opposed disfellowshipping, emphasizing open dialogue and questioning within the faith. 3. **Shift in Leadership**: Subsequent leaders, like Rutherford and Nathan Knorr, introduced and solidified disfellowshipping practices as a means of maintaining doctrinal purity and organizational control. 4. **Disfellowshipping Practices**: Disfellowshipping involves severe social and familial shunning, effectively cutting off individuals from the community and even from their families. 5. **Emotional and Social Impact**: The practice has caused significant emotional and social harm to individuals and families, leading to isolation and distress. 6. **Modern Adjustments**: Recent changes have softened the approach to disfellowshipped individuals, allowing limited interactions such as greetings at meetings, though core practices remain unchanged. 7. **Criticism and External Pressure**: The practice has faced growing criticism and external pressure, such as from the Norwegian government, which led to some reevaluation and adjustments in their policies. 8. **Internal Justifications**: The organization justifies disfellowshipping as necessary for maintaining moral and doctrinal purity, viewing dissenters as a threat to the community's spiritual health. 9. **Continued Control Mechanism**: Despite recent changes, disfellowshipping remains a key control mechanism within the organization, aimed at preventing dissent and maintaining conformity. 10. **Evolving Public Image**: Jehovah's Witnesses are attempting to adapt their public image in response to criticism, making superficial changes while retaining the fundamental practice of disfellowshipping.

You nailed it Wally. nailed it. But know if God told JW.Borg to stop removing/df'ing ppl they would still do it. Some them, you know, love it. It's the greatest abuse of the smallest amount of power I have ever experienced in LIFE.

I have been on both sides of the table. At my own judicial meeting, I had to face five elders, only one of which I'd describe as intelligent. The first question they asked was ",why did you ask to work with the circuit overseer?" as if that had anything to do with anything. Throughout the whole process no one asked about the circumstances leading to my error, no one considered how I was mentally falling apart. One said he'd never heard anyone say all the wrong things at a judicial. I was honest, I needed support and they threw me out because they did not seek any understanding, so fuck you, I think I'd probably decided I wanted to quit anyway. As an elder and part of a judicial committee, we had a young woman who had committed adultery, a one night stand. On talking to her the answer was obvious, she was a foreign national, she'd married while her husband and his family were migrants to that country, moved to the UK with them and was living with them, she was lonely, homesick and had no space for herself, the family and her husband could not see what she was going through. We decided not to disfellowship and i am glad, to this day I believe, that was the right decision. This video is horrific, just because he does not say I've hurt Jehovah he is made to suffer. However much they tell you it is a loving way back, it certainly isn't.
