Manchester United have gone downhill as a team, don’t see themselves getting back up anytime soon - no wonder people are changing to be city fans

The reason they played their first game in 1880 is because they were formed in 1880. The Newton Heath of 1878 was a rugby club and nothing to do with the later football club. The year on the badge is just plain wrong.

"Nicknamed the Red Devils, they were founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, but changed their name to Manchester United in 1902."

@@YourFootballZone Not true, a visit to Manchester library or the book "A Man`s Game" the birth of Mancunian football will confirm what I say. You dont start a football club up and then not play for two years. The local paper dated 1884 contains an interview with the Newton Heath chairmen who confirms they had been going 4yrs at the time. The original badge had a steam train on it but no year as for the nickname "The Red Devils" that came decades later a name they lifted from Salford Rugby Club. Why would they be called the red devils if they played in yellow and green? The earlier and first club to play association football in Manchester was St Marks later to become Manchester City.

@@YourFootballZone the nick name of red devils came in 1972-73, before then united never associated with this name.
