In a grim way, he's too unlucky to be afforded the peace in death. Hence, hes always never killed by his bad luck and has to live through more bad luck. It does make you wonder though... this level of bad luck... could it be a curse on the level of the world itself placed on him by a god? They say he was abandoned by the world itself. Maybe he was cursed by it too. It's strange that the bad luck shuts off the second he's unconscious, almost like a safety mechanism to prevent bad luck from ever killing him.
