The Entombment of Christ is an incredible, famous art history painting, in which you can study Caravaggio's art techniques and the Baroque art style. In this video, I cover the characteristics of Baroque and Caravaggio paintings, and then I apply those characteristics to The Entombment of Christ. This is my favorite Caravaggio painting and one of my favorite famous paintings from all of art history.

I love it!! I had no idea there was so much to discover. I wonder how much of it was intentional and how much of it was intuitive for Caravaggio...I'm excited to watch more of your videos! I came across this one from a FB ad!

Thanks, Sarah! I'm glad you liked the video! And such a great, thought-provoking question; one that constantly surrounds art and the interpretation of it. In terms of intentionality and intuition, I think it's fair to say there is a little bit of both. Caravaggio was clearly a talented artist--one that was known for painting quickly without sketches and often with live models. This reflects that his work was often that of personal inspiration and talent. On the other hand, he was working for the Catholic church during the Counter-Reformation trying to bring Catholics back to the church after many converted to Protestantism. The goal was to show the humanist aspect of the Catholic religion which is why Caravaggio painted in such a natural manner. He was also studying the Mannerist movement that came right before Baroque. They experimented with color and lighting in a way that you could say Caravaggio was an extension of that experimentation. He very clearly has his own unique style, but one that aligns specifically with the history of the Baroque time period.

Did he actually think and plan all these diagonals, lines and lighting when painting or it’s just something intuitive?

Do you know what message Caravaggio is trying to convey in the Entombment? Would it be that there is still hope in Jesus' restriction?
