Today we share our huge new commercial composting area. It's a classic 3-bin composting area with lots and lots of space to make TONS of compost!
COMPOST EVERYTHING: amzn.to/3MzHCME
Compost Your Enemies t-shirts: www.aardvarkte...
Subscribe to the newsletter: thesurvivalgar...
David's gardening blog: www.thesurvival...
Composting on a household scale is easy - but what about on a larger scale? We need to make lots of compost for our plant nursery, so CJ and Sam built us a big concrete compost bin capable of making tons of compost a year. We're using it for composting chicken, restaurant waste, coffee ground, peanut waste and more.

This is awesome. Since watching nearly all of your composting videos, I pretty much compost everything. When I come home from fishing, I filet the catches and then bury the rest of the carcasses in the compost. Pretty amazing how fast they are eaten by all the worms and maggots. I'm all for more composting videos LOL. It's pretty much my favorite thing ever.

After coffee and doughnuts at church Sunday, I dared to route through the upper part of a trash can for the half eaten doughnuts...didn't do enough to agitate onlookers. Ended up tossing it directly to happy chickens. Slow track instead of fast track to the compost pile.

I bring a small trash bin to the cafeteria when I do lunchroom duty at school. The kids know if they don't want to eat their food, they can feed my chickens instead of throwing it in the trash cans. They always rush to be the first kids to put their scraps in the bucket. The students always enjoy seeing pictures of my 'Laying Ladies,' too.

Those bends sure tidy up the place. I don't have compost binds myself due to lack of ambition and being lazy. My method for composting is also to compost everything. I just add to the pile for one year and never turn it or concern myself with brown or green material mixture. I start a new one every year and leave them alone until the 3rd year. The compost I use for my garden is always from the 3 year old pile. It sure makes the garden grow and the food I get is better than anything I have bought from the store.

I compost small amounts of meat (and my chicken who died), but bears are a notorious problem around here. As in, one finds scat in the back yard. So I bury it deep and usually only small amounts. After I buried the chicken, the cantaloupe scraps buried nearby sprouted and produced huge plants, faster than I've ever seen anything grow!

Hey, here's an idea you might use for bones, if you're interested. I've started using all my bones to make bone broth. Afterwards, they're a lot softer, and break easily. I get more food out of the bones, and then the bones will break down into compost in my compost pile faster! Perfect!

Very nice! I have a triple bin compost inside my garden area that I love. Composting was my first passion before gardening, and I still love it. I'm in Maine in the U.S. and the current big scare is invasive Asian Jumping Worms....I guess they look almost identical to the worms and nightcrawlers we've had since Europeans brought them over, but these jumping worms reportedly deplete the soil's nutrients. Folks are getting them in their gardens because they're buying gardening soil from Wal-Mart and the like, and the worms are in there. There is currently no remedy to rid the soil of them once they're established. To make a short story long, I'm so glad I compost and don't buy soil! Between home composting, lasagna gardening and no-till, utilizing urine, crop rotation, chop and drop, cover crops, etc. I'm all set without supplementing with additives from the store!! I love your videos, thank you!! Last year I asked for and got your "chainsaw" shirt lol. This year the "Compost your Enemies" is going on the list!

I just processed a bunch of chickens today. All the scraps were dumped into a hole I dug next to a young pecan tree that I planted this year. I came out a few feet with the scraps so I didn’t burn it up. So now that tree has a pocket of fertility breaking down right next to it. I dumped the blood in one of my asparagus beds. I watered it down so it would soak in. I’m thinking about burning the scraps next time so they break down faster.

Last Sunday at church someone brought their expresso machine to treat people to strong coffee. I handed them a container and said, "May I please have your coffee grounds for my compost?" They were happy to give them to me. After it was over, I brought them home and immediately put them on my compost pile before I even went into the house.

David, ur reply to the using a concrete/block structure is so right 👍! I just harvested my 1yr static "ground"pile & the bottom half was clogged full of roots & grubs. 2 afternoons of back breaking sifting out. We have taken in many stray cats at our ranch. We tame them and get them fixed. We now have 15! They are indoors a lot of the time. I have been using equine pine pellets for the litter boxes for years because before we ended up with a cat litter clay mountain. The pine pellets saved me probably a thousand dollars per year plus they impart a fresh cut wood fragrance, way less dust, no chalky smell, and no mountain since it does decompose. They do a great job controlling odor until they completely turn to saw dust. Then I dump & spread them in the fields. But twice a day I scoop out the solid waste which goes to the landfill. Could all of it be composted? Could it become soil that is safe for gardens or any use at some point?

A few years ago when we had one dog I thought geez look at all that money (dog food) sitting on the lawn so I decided to compost her poop. Now we have 3 dogs. I use an old garbage can with a lid and holes in the bottom. Toss in the poop and cover with leaves. When that can is full I just leave it for 6 months and the worms move in and help out. Put the resulting compost on my lawn and flower beds. Win, win. 😊

Adding two to three more layers of block height on this system would be such a capacity increase it would be mind blowing. If you filled two of these bins simultaneously - within a month you could combine / mix / blend the contents of the two bins into the third bin and just let it finish in the third bin - at first it would be overflowing, but it would compact down within a week. Once everything was combined - you could work on filling the other two bins all over again. So much organic opportunity.

Yes, for sure. I didn't want to go higher yet since we're turning by hand. The walls need to be low enough in the center to throw over.

How do you think it will go not connected to the ground. Very cool will be interesting to see progress. I'll stick to throwing scraps in garden. I can't be bothered with compost piles.
