Dear followers and subscribers,
In this series I am going to share with you the complete biography of THE EPIC OF LING GYESAR GYELPO
King Gesar, a heroic epic, was crafted by the Tibetans using a blend of ancient legends, myths, verses, proverbs, and various other folk cultures of Tibet. Passed down orally through generations for over 1,000 years, the epic originated from folk oral traditions. The story was enriched and embellished by folk balladeers over the years, making it near perfect and highly popular by the early 12th Century. Compiled mainly by the monks of Nyingmapa in the 11th Century, King Gesar has been collected in over 120 volumes, containing more than one million verses (over 20 million words) - making it 25 times longer than Homer's Iliad. This epic, considered the greatest work of Tibetan literature, has been translated into various languages and is now a subject of study internationally. Known as the king of the ancient Tibetan kingdom of the Ling in Tibetan-inhabited areas, Gesar's heroic deeds are kept alive through imaginative retellings of the epic. Today, inscribed woodblocks and handwritten copies of the epic can be found in various locations, with the Potala Palace housing a statue of Gesar that continues to attract pilgrims daily.
