Love/Hate this so much. I have watched this and the full documentary several times. I just hate that it was never completed. His speech before the Senate is one of the best pieces of film I have ever seen, bar none.

Wonderful, it's on par with the BBC production, Laughton is the perfect Claudius. The scenes show what a faithful adaptation to Graves's books this film version would have been. What a great loss to the world of Cinema this was not completed.

The Epic that Might Have Been. Laughton is brilliant inspite of his moments of self-doubt. Robert Newton is seen briefly but effectively, Emlyn Williams is Hilariously malignant as Caligula. Flora Robson is made-up 3 times her age as the old Empress. And the lighting/camera is shimmering and magnetic.

I wonder, were they ever planning to show Caligula's sisters and his disturbing relations with them, and Claudius later marrying his niece?

@@HookLineSinker4343 Your Welcome! I did not know that, I'm surprised that would be in a 1930s picture. There seems to be no casting for Drusilla or Agrippina (Caligula's sisters) but maybe they were never realeased

uh...I don't think British censors were ready or willing to allow Claudius' 'domestic details' in a 1937 film project.
@lawrencejelsma81182 жыл бұрын
Since this is the story of I Claudius the story of Caligula was done. I think I remember it being in that other ruthless Emperor of Rome movie, Nero? Still, the 1979 Penthouse Caligulas movie explicitly filled in all the other details away from censorship.

I only found this recently. Pity it was not completed. If you have never seen the BBC serial version from the 1970's with Derek Jacobi and John Hurt - it's fantastic - especially when Claudius is an adult and Derek Jacobi takes the role - it's all online (free): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXbIiZaAj6p0irc Here is Derek Jacobi's speech to the Senators, after the Army makes him Emperor - the same part that Laughton portrays in this. Production had likely been suspended before getting to that scene. It would have been complicated to shoot and edit in any event. Merle Oberon's car accident and injuries gave everyone a way out of what had become a frustrating learning experience---and what a damned shame. This could have been a crown jewel in so many careers.

Did they even have enough room in the studio to bring a horse in there. You know the old saying never work with animals or kids

Well, it makes it a little more historically accurate: Caligula didn't make Incitatus a senator, he only said he would as a joke.

After seeing recently the TV adaptation got a shock seeing the public mocking scene of Claudius in this movie: looks like a very weird scene far from the funny elegance of the TV adaptation. I had to read the book to see if Robert Graves wrote something like that. In general everyone praises this incomplete movie but at first looks like were plaged by bad decisions, is not a surprise Emlyn Williams said Merle Oberon's accident was a Godsent thing because made producers to left the movie unfinished.
