Straight to the point, no bs. This is how videos should be. Good job.

PREACH!!! More power to Monolith and @NeutralSupportNews for kicking out this video and explainer; can't wait to get my CalipERD!

Great vid! With rims requiring washers (eg dt swiss), and when using the home made tool, i assume one should take the NSD measurement with a washer inserted in between nipple and rim at each end - just as would be done on the actual build - then still add 3mm to get the ERD…..? Cheers!

Yep! All additional hardware should be taken into account - and you can definitely measure in one go with the washers, or add the thickness of 2 washers to the final measurement.

Thanks for the informative video Danielle, would be interesting if you could make a video comparing SON Speichen rechner vs Monolith CalipERD. Greetings from Croatia

I'd like to take a longer look at the SON, I don't have one in the shop. Incredibly simple design, straightforward way to get NSD measurement (no matter what they say about it being ERD 😜)

I use the SON which is very effective and accurate. I now will purchase the CalipERD because I love bike tools

I don't quite understand why you add 3mm to the result. Your spokes are 250mm and they measure to the end of the nipple. In my opinion this is the erd point. Why do you think you only measure the nsd with the spokes instead of erd? Thank you for your support. Love from Holland

The homemade versions were measured to be 250mm from the base of the lip on the nipple (the nipple seat) - I had made them to work like the Rim Rods. I just COULD have made them to measure ERD if I had set the length differently. Since they were just an example, I didn't want to make any more 😁

ERD is not a fixed point but “relative”. This is why it is named ERD “effective” rim diameter. Which nipple used will “effect” the diameter if you will

Wow never knew how to properly measure spoke length.

I'm just glad we have spoke calculators these days to save us from saying "man my math teacher was right, I should have paid more attention" 😁 As long as you start with good rim and hub measurements, the calculators do all of the complex geometry for us 😅

I'm curious if you ever do the measure the circumference of the rim bed, then divide by pi, then subtract the measured distance to the nipple seat (x2) method? And how that compares to the three in this video? I build a fair number of wheels, but often times it's the same build, so I'm not always measuring ERD evey time, but when I do, I like to do it a couple different ways, if I can, just to make sure I'm on the right track. Also, would you be able to measure the ERD on a built wheel with the calibERD? You can't do that with rim rods, but if you could with the calibERD, that could be quite useful.
@NeutralSupportNews11 ай бұрын
I don't in practice, but I did so we can compare: Circumference: 1943 Depth to nipple seat: 13.3 NSD: 591.88 ERD: 594.88 With 595 being the reading on the CalipERD - I'm happy to call that accurate. For your second question, you could probably cheat the CalipERD by using the Enve feelers, butt them right up to the spoke nipple head in the rim, and then subtract the necessary amount based on the spoke nipple in there. I can't see that being as accurate as measuring without the wheel built, but probably accurate enough for a situation where you would need it. This also assumes that the wheel was built with the correct length spoke to not stick through past the slot (interfering with the measurement altogether). Maybe the key would be a feeler that is a tube that fits over the head to get closer to the NSD measurement. 🤷♀️
