I think we can view 'escape room' as a grouping of the edge-cases of loosely related genres. Experimental enough to stand out, but not so much that they completely pop off into their own categories. Music for introverted novelty seekers who, thanks to the internet, have access to a near infinite cache of unique noises. Basically, an online-based avant-garde.

This is a great short video, I didn't realize that everynoise was made by the same guy that labeled Escape Room, as a genre it obviously doesn't represent much of anything besides loose overlapping of listeners, I don't think these terms serve much use to people outside of Spotify's ecosystem. The internet age has made groupings of genres largely decentralized and individual and I don't see the necessity in adding specific labels for artists that don't necessarily fit together all that well.

Thank you, escape room was apparently my 3rd favourite genre. I listened to a playlist and I only liked about 20% of it... fun little bit of data analysis but it's not great for listeners

No doubt there will be haters but in the context of reclamation language, I think "escape room" has the ability to ironically demarcate the taste of experimental music fans in a way that has not really been done before. I know anecdotally that a lot of people who listen to Peggy also listen to 100 Gecs and it's because they are open to ideas and novelty. Even if the name is cringe, to say you're a fan of "escape room" in an ironic way, this shows this kind of taste in music.

Yea I’ve seen a few artists in the Hyperpop category that shouldn’t really be there. Although I think there are more defining traits for Hyperpop as opposed to Escape Room
