Reminds me of the first time I trained Kali under a grandmaster. We were doing the 12 basic strikes partner drill with sticks and he told me to stop putting my strength behind every strike as if I was swinging a baseball bat because it was slowing me down and just relax and go with the flow. When I asked him how a weak strike to the forearm was going to work against an aggressive resisting opponent full of adrenaline, he switched to a real ginunting blade and told to me to stick my arm out and see whether I could withstand a weak strike from that. I never applied strength to my strikes again from that moment on, and just learned to rely on speed and accuracy more to improve my Kali.
@DEVILISHLY_DELICIOUS
@DEVILISHLY_DELICIOUS 2 жыл бұрын
How often does a street fight involve a ginunting blade? Stick fighting drills are good for increasing hand speed and accuracy, but not for learning how to fight. To win a street fight you have to be ballistic in everything you do, even when you yield to catch their energy for a throw or some kind of hold or takedown. The only time you can win with weak strikes is when you are the superior fighter, but unless you are a grandmaster you won't be able to tell until the fight is over. Be first and be devastating.

Over here in the Philippines, it's actually more common than you think. Especially in the rural provinces were 13" bolos are common household items and are legal for farm and labor workers to openly carry. In big cities, it is common for a lot of taxi drivers and car owners to hide either a steel pipe or a bolo under their seat inside their vehicles for "emergencies". The steel pipes are favored more as you can always claim it is a jack handle if the cops start asking questions after an incident. Even a weak strike from a steel pipe will incapacitate you if it hits bone.

One hit, one kill. That's true. In the streets in the Philippines, you learn how to either run as fast as you can to avoid the conflict or you stay, but you always fight to maim or kill. There is no middle ground. There is no art to it. It's just combat and survival. If you decide to fight, be ready for the consequences later. Patay kung patay. Hospital or sementeryo lang.

But the thing is, street fights are rare and only on small things. What is common in the Philippines (Manila/Tagalog area) is assassinations. Being attacked with a knife is an assassination, and most prefer to do it while your looking the other way. Guns are also very common, no amount of stick training will save you from that. It's best to stick in groups where everyone is armed, preferably with both guns and knives. Someone has to watch your back, and one has to watch the surroundings.

This is the balintawak arins art created by Anciong Bacon after world war 2 when all of the other arnis eskrima styles have been on top of their game. It is no joke. Straight to the point. Very dangerous if not given any restraint. There has been only a few teachers of this arnis style with different system of instuctions. It is really nice to see these teachers slowly emerging to the world and catch up to other well known arnis styles.

Makes me wish these people are the ones who get more attention. Sad to see that con artists like detroit urban survival makes bank by fooling people and even worse, giving them a false sense of security potentially getting killed. We need more authentic teachers like this who knows how to entertain, but at the same time teach actually useful self defense lessons, and give them more exposure and financial support.

SPEED, PRECISE ACCURACY AND AWARENESS OF THE SURROUNDING IS THE KEY TO STAY ALIVE WHEN IN COMBAT AND MOST OF ALL MAKE YOUR WEAPON FREE OF DAMAGE OR AVOID LANDING YOUR WEAPON AGAINST OPPONENT WEAPON DURING COMBAT. IN THAT WAY, YOU CAN STILL FIGHT A THOUSAND BATTLES WITHOUT CHANGING THE WEAPON YOU ARE USING.

My guro teaches the same way: you can be fancy or you can survive. Keep yourself tight. Be economical with your movements, and leave the flashy stuff at home.

just avoid fights in general unless you are ready to wage your life. don't take everyone for a joke just because you know how to defend yourself. even a bee can kill. self discipline comes first execution when it's inevitable
