What a great period film. It is a perfect companion to "The Court-martial of Billy Mitchell," as it is the true story of what the WW1 Flying Ace went through to get the Navy to embrace the vision of Naval Air. Also, Sterling Hayden, doing a great acting job here. What a tribute to the actor, who did not let his roles make him take himself too seriously, portraying the mad base commander in "Dr. Strangelove."

Just for the record it was the British Royal Navy that conducted the first landing of a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier. The British were responsible for the initial development of the angled flight deck, the steam catapult and the optical landing system, all essential for jet aircraft operations. The first aircraft carrier built from the keel up with an angled flight deck was HMS Ark Royal in 1955.

@ 1 02 33 This scene of a US Navy command that was conservative to the point of myopia is false, but it is the preferred Hollywood story of the embattled "outsider" against the forces of the "establishment." Some of the contrarian facts are the following: "In early 1943, aviation officials at the United States Navy were impressed with McDonnell's audacious XP-67 Bat project. McDonnell was invited by the navy to cooperate in the development of a shipboard jet fighter, using an engine from the turbojets under development by Westinghouse Electric Corporation." -- Source: "McDonnell FH Phantom," Wikipedia "The first jet aircraft successfully used on US Navy carriers was the McDonnell FH Phantom. The FH Phantom made its first carrier landing on August 21, 1946, aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. This marked a significant milestone in naval aviation history, proving the viability of jet-powered aircraft for carrier operations. The first jet aircraft type to become operational on US Navy carriers was the North American FJ-1 Fury. It entered operational service in March 1948 and made its first carrier landing on March 10, 1948, aboard the USS Boxer. The first Grumman jet aircraft to become operational with the US Navy was the Grumman F9F Panther. It entered operational service in May 1949 and was the first jet-powered fighter aircraft to see air-to-air combat with the United States Navy." -- Source: "Copilot," MS AI Web Research Assistant

For me this is the best Sterling Hayden movie ever, and the whole biographical story behind it ensures that it is a masterpiece of real films made, films that todays Hollywood studios don’t, won’t and can’t make without completely ruining the story and the filming process with CGI and soon to be joined by A.I, and that will make actors redundant and eventually the whole film industry, and that would be a very very bad mistake, we have already seen the drawbacks of letting A.I run amok in other media platforms. I am very surprised that the United States 🇺🇸 Navy didn’t have armoured flight decks, wooden decks were no defence against the likes of the Japanese 🇯🇵 dive bombers and definitely not against the Kamikaze aircraft, I don’t know why they didn’t but I’m sure someone can explain it for me, and whether or not the new carriers had armoured flight decks as part of there new designs.
@MrMojolinux
@MrMojolinux Ай бұрын
The reason for US wooden decks was speed, nautical speed. Also for maneuverability and swiftly heading into the wind for launching aircraft. The US didn't have armored flight decks until the end of the war with the Midway class "Large Carriers".

What a different breed of men in his day, and he is not the only one who returned to duty and work after war injury. Today, the same man, after the leg injury, would take a medical discharge and disability payment and quit serving or working immediately. He believed in continued service, even at great further hazard to himself. That is a man. A true warrior. After WWII ended, men with missing limbs WORKED the rest of their life for the post office, for example. Today, they would quit and loaf.

I believe it was the British who landed jets on carriers first.
@allandavis8201
@allandavis8201 Ай бұрын
You are 100% correct, it was the chief test pilot Eric “Winkle” Brown in late 1945, but he also made the first deck landing of a twin jet engine, tricycle undercarriage, aircraft, and the first helicopter landing on a carrier deck, the list of his “firsts” and types of aircraft he flew is incredible, and in my opinion he was the best pilot (test pilot included) that the great British 🇬🇧 Royal Navy and Military Aviation industry has ever seen before, and not just in Great Britain 🇬🇧, the best pilot in the world during his very long and illustrious service and career. R.I.P Sir, you earned your place in aviation industry by just being the best. Per Ardua ad Astra, I salute you Eric “Winkle” Brown. P.S It was also us British that solved the “straight through” carrier problem by introducing the “angled” deck configuration that allowed for faster, better and safer takeoffs and recovery procedures, us Brits might not be the biggest and best military in the world right now but we have solved some of biggest problems that the pre and post WWII Naval forces had at the start of the jet age and even now we have come up with some pretty good ideas and practical solutions to enhance the Royal Navy and allied Naval forces ever since, and I sincerely hope that we will continue to enhance both military and civilian aviation capabilities whilst there is a need for them or aviation is no longer available because of the need for fossil fuels to power jet engines and if that does happen our world will become smaller, possibly back to the time when there was no aircraft or any form of fossil fuelled transport.

What makes this movie watchable is the incredible live footage. As in all his other movies, hayden's stiff acting style screams "amateur". The only film he ever seemed relaxed in was actually a reflection of his real life: Dr. Strangelove. The post-amputation segments border on the absurd, despite the characters lame speech about what Navy wives have to endure. His character cares more for the new ship than about his own family. This ranks as one of the worst "patriotic" films of all time. It was only towards the end that Hayden's character seemed to warm up to the role. If this is a true-to-the facts autobiography, I'll eat my words, but I can't shake the feeling that the screenplay was written by the Pentagon.
