When I first heard there was going to be a lecture on the ethics of ethics, this is what came to my mind: What are the ethics of asking ethical questions as opposed to not? There are limited kinds of justifications for an ethic being considered valid. Wes has explored the societal aspect of this in this lecture. Ethics here are personal, and limited for pragmatic reasons imposed by society. This is one source of ethics. But then there is also basing ethics on intuition. Once one begins to study ethics, they begin to question a lot more about what they do. Once religion is no longer the source, the doors are opened to intuition, which is largely based on feelings and avoiding suffering, but also some decided values, which manifest through utilitarianism and also consequentialism. If someone begins to question the basic rules and guidelines which used to guide their behavior, they may do terrible things in the name of ends which align with values manifested. Then there is giving up from the ambiguity and uncertainty of what is ethical, basically causing one to become indifferent to different courses of action as nihilism. After all, so much of ethics comes down to the perspective a situation is presented by, and aside from personal gain, there can be many interpretations of what is for the good of all, and contrasting values. I think Wes' lecture came out to be more interesting for discussing what he did instead of this, however. Posting now for the algorithm. Maybe I'll revise later.

The Islamic golden age was between 600s to the Mongol invasions in 1200s. Ottomans came afterwards. The guild system was most likely inherited from the Byzantine empire the Ottomans conquered.

18:34 to 19:00 anti-slavery "argument" sounds like an American in Cambridge (UK) All of whom think the fart joke is the first and last point of humour, go hyper-capitalist to a really irrational degree, and work for the military. But I know others who've lately just got bored of how fragile and fixed in facial expression, clueless about infrastructure and society, and shouty and self-rigorous they are as sort of opposites to Wes Cecil. And they absolutely would use that argument, the word psychopath comes to mind.
