In this episode, students learn the events that led the Continental Congress to declare independence from Great Britain. After the protests over taxes and Lexington and Concord most colonists and leaders still did not want or were very worried about declaring independence and becoming a new nation. This lesson teaches students what finally convinced Americans and the Continental Congress to make the revolutionary decision to declare independence.
It covers Thomas Paine's Common Sense and how the pamphlet convinced many neutral Americans of the benefits of breaking off from Britain and then how Richard Henry Lee on June 7, 1776 put forth a resolution for independence. This led to the formation of the "Committee of Five" to write an official declaration which ultimately was tasked to Thomas Jefferson to write. The video teaches the ideas of the declaration that came to define the nation and how the issue of slavery was ignored due to its potential to divide the colonies. In the end, they learn how the Declaration helped the United States win the Revolutionary War and its lasting impact today.
