Jerry is actually a family friend, got to hang out with him at a few block parties in Brooklyn as a kid. Funny thing is, he came to every block party dressed like Jerry Only from the Misfits lol. Literally everything he wore on stage except the makeup haha. Despite that he was always super humble, super friendly, grateful to everyone who approached him, great guy.

That is just objectively true. Dude has a cringeworthy persona and takes himself a bit too seriously but if you can actually listen to music without thinking about those things, dude just has a ridiculously unique and undeniably good style of songwriting and he’s also always seemed like he’s pretty well read on stuff he talks about.

I've been listening to them since I was a kid and finally got to see them live at Riot Fest. Lemme say that they put on one of the best shows (I've been to 100s at this point) I've ever seen. With 3 of the 4 original guys and Dave Lombardo from Slayer on drums. They still got it and didn't seem like they were slowing down. Absolute legends.

They had two or three other guitar players before Doyle. In fact, jerry only was not the original bass player either. He was the first to record with them, but a woman named Diane Diplaza or something like that played with them before him, so honestly Danzig was the only original member on that stage.

Danzig by himself is pretty crazy. He's a metal musician, he's worked on comics, films, and appeared as a guest on Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He was almost going to audition as Wolverine for the first X-Men film. I'm surprised you left out the Japanese Horror Punk Band Balzac. They're definitely influenced by the Misfits, and toured with the Misfits in the 90's, I believe. They're also pretty good. They have a really raw punk sound which is missing from later punk bands.

I was thinking about name dropping Balzac when I talked about horror punk as a whole, but I wound up sticking to bands I’m more familiar with. One of these days I’ll talk about horror punk on it’s own and I’ll definitely talk about them there.

Glenn isnt a metal musician, he is a punk who has done some albums with metal influences. If you read interviews he always talks about being a punk and doesnt liken himself to be metal. thats where people get confused, having a punk attitude in the metal community.

It always bums me out to see how much the Misfits get passed over in punk documentaries. I've seen a few major ones with nary a mention. Their loss. Because Misfits were one of the absolute best bands ever. I got into them through Danzig after being turned on to Lucifuge in '90. After that I went backwards and gobbled up every bit of Misfits and Samhain I could find. I still listen to that stuff and they've definitely influenced my aesthetic from day one.

I have been a huge super fan for the misfits since I was 10 years old…. I seen them in San Francisco in ‘82. My cousin worked at a club and snuck me in to see the show… Fear was there too and both bands were amazing. Since that day I have been Punk obsessed. I remember I got a shirt from that concert that was way too big for me and I wore it till it was tattered and tore. My mom was way less happy about my change. LOL what does she know she was a hippie. @@bene1989 people act like it was something remarkable for a 16 year old Doyle to hit a 15 year old in the head with his guitar or for a couple of guys from jersey to mock the alternative lifestyles of san francisco. Danzig claimed it had to do with a gang of commie punks attempting to control the sf scene and I think I buy that.

Bro, you skipped over the first guitarist, Jimmy Battle, and bassist Dianne DiPiazza who was replaced by Jerry Caiafa. On their first self published single, Cough-Cool (with Manny, Glenn and Jerry), Glenn misspelled Caiafa as Cafia. Jerry wanted Glenn to use his first name only, so Glenn put Jerry Only on the next pressing.

Danzig era Misfits are still my all time favourite punk band. I love the songs and I love the image. As a kid who used to spend a lot of my free time watching trashy b-movies and loved monsters and all that kind of stuff they stood out to me in the best possible way. I've been into punk rock since the early 80s but never got into Misfits. Their songs are good, but the horror/sci-fi thing seemed silly. A few weeks ago I hear "The Original" Misfits are together & playing. So I decided to go & was shocked by TWO things...1.) FEAR opened (I didn't know till I got there). 2.) Misfits are headlining over Alice Cooper & FILLED a 20,000-seat amphitheater! I had NO IDEA Misfits were so popular! Loved seeing FEAR for the second time in 2 months, enjoyed Alice Cooper's stage show, and I was BLOWN AWAY by Misfits! Glenn is a 67 year old teenager! Same for Lee Ving at 72, Alice Cooper at 74. They're all aging well & seem healthy. I've never seen a punk show this huge, Misfits were incredible & played all their old classics. Humongous, non-stop pit of happy punk rockers, too. History-making night!

The horror aspect kept the music free of political rhetoric, since most people dont have a right to preach out of sheer stupidity ignorance. More then half the punk bands are ignorant to where anarchy stems from and the other half, only wants to get fucked up. The punk rock ideology needs an update.
@NEUR0MANCER_
@NEUR0MANCER_ Жыл бұрын
Also the horror aspect set them apart from other bands in the scene who all copied each other. Let's be honest about punk. IT has become another form of conformity, an ideology that shames anyone who might think differently. Even having a uniform that is a telling characteristic of conformist movements. From my POV, a true punk, is a individual unto themselves. and they rebel even from the rebellious. For rebellion can become the neo norm and represent the same force and power that it was created to oppose. True punk, stands against conformity, no matter what form it takes. BE it punk, white bred americanism, or communism. Punk was created to oppose all forms of group think. YEt when left unchecked, and led by the blind deaf and dumb becomes the very tenant of group think and its collectivism. Most punk bands, are all trying to sound like each other. Misfits was one of the few who stand alone. and thats what makes their music and symbol more punk then the likes of any crust punk band. Since most crust is nothing if not the same 5 bands in sound producing the same shit over and over. Which got so old, sludge and doom metal over shadowed crust as soon as it became clear it was something differnt. Not based in polticial ideology. But mythology and lore. MArrying horror punk elements with metal tones. So you see, misifits were always superior to the other bands, because everyone has always tried to be a copy of the bands they like the most. and its only the flagship bands who stand apart. and the ones who pioneer the sounds that are only worth listening to. How many grind bands sound exactly like assuck or napalm death? How many wanted to sound exact like destroy! and disrupt? HAd punk continued to innovate, it could of continued to be just as relevant as its offshoots which have pretty much over shadowed new forms of punk, that stopped growing, stopped changing, and didnt wantr to be differnt in any way. Theres a reason bands like catharsis and abc diablo are superior to the likes of thulsa doom or contravene. BEcause they are simply, smarter, better bands willing to stand on their own terms and do their own thing.

@AKR-lq1if
@AKR-lq1if 2 жыл бұрын
who was singing for them before graves, after Danzig? it was actually Peter Steele, who Jerry had lined up as Glenn's replacement, who was being taught the songs by Graves (who jerry liked, but wanted a more mature guy with a name in the industry) who told the Caifia bros to use Graves. "he's your guy", Steele told jerry. "He knows all the songs, and sings them great". With Peter Steele's endorsement, Michale got the gig. I never liked Graves ( that lineup of the band was fine, but should've just called themselves by a different name) and then all that right wing political shit came out about Graves and made the whole situation way less tolerable
@ofwoden
@ofwoden 2 жыл бұрын
@@AKR-lq1if I didn't know they were lining up Peter Steele! At the show I referenced above I'm 90% sure it wasn't Graves singing. I'll root around and see if any of my friends remember the show well enough to give me a clue about who was singing. I have to admit that I haven't been keeping track of Misfits news for many years (probably just after Graves left the band and tried to join the Marines IIRC) and after watching this video I looked up Graves and saw his Newsmax interviews where he complained about being cancelled or whatever. It was gross.

I didn't start listening to them until I was 14 and that pretty much opened my love for punk. Not only that, at a time when kids were "growing out" of the Halloween spirit in the mid 90s, the Misfits gave me back my Halloween! It was like they gave me back my childhood and made the holiday special and important again, even though it was kinda seeing it in a new light. Maybe a darker light lol. It really helped me to stay young at heart and always has.

Love your channel and all the work you put into these videos. The Misfits are by far my favorite band and I half to second the comments about the reunion tours of late being absolutely incredible. One genre I don’t think they get credit for influencing (among others) is Black Metal, particularly Earth AD. Many black metal bands have covered the Misfits and you can hear a lot of that raw aggression from Earth AD on those early black metal staples.

The one thing that would really help to enjoy it greatly is better editing to have some gaps in the dialogue as it's relentless, so it sounds unnatural. Very few You tubers use this style any longer. Most righteous video. Your enthusiasm for all your subjects is infectious and has made me want to definitely pull out my old Misfits lps. Your videos really could be used as a teaching outlet as your informative but upbeat and flowing style is perfect for new fans and old diehards alike. Cheers brother,keep up the good work.

Back in ‘93/‘94 myself and a couple neighborhood friends started a punk/hardcore band called The Clap. I was like 14 or 15. I played guitar (I didn’t know shit about playing guitar). After a bunch of practice sessions I’d start getting the hang of it. Our first show was a small benefit show for “Food not Bombs”. I was nervous af! We did a Misfits cover of “I turned into a Martian”, once those first three chords rang out and people started stage diving and moshing - it was like magic. We’d go on to play many shows with iconic bands like Hatebreed (back in their beginning days), Bouncing Souls, Weston, Snapcase, our sister band - Bladecrasher (VBHC), Endeavor, Floorpunch, PeeTanks, 25 Ta Life, Lifetime, Lost Tribe (VA skate legends), The Unabombers (RIP Tre), Inquisition, Shutdown and more. Man, It was such a great experience especially at such a young age. We played our last show in ‘96 I believe and ending the set with a cover of JUDGE’s “New York Crew”. I was playing drums by this point. People were going nuts, stage diving off my drum set and half stacks. The only thing left standing was the bass drum and Tom rack ahaha. By 1999 I would have my first son, marking the end of a chapter and start of another. At 44 and with both of my sons in their 20’s…..I may have to get me a crimson skull tattoo. I don’t know, maybe. I have an urge to listen to Earth Crisis’ cover of “Earth A.D.” all of a sudden 🤷🏻‍♂️🍿

I saw the 2nd Misfits at Maritime Hall, SF. It wasn’t long after they’d parted ways with Graves and Dr. Chud mid tour. Hetfield sang his staples, the guy from one of the supporting bands(started with Z), and Jerry sang the rest. I give them props for pulling it off, and not canceling.

Man, I just listened to Box Set at work yesterday, as I was craving some of the classic Misfits. Then this drops, how fuckin' rad. Also never forget Jerry and Doyle's Christian thrash metal band Kryst The Conqueror! Also also, once again I must put the Screeching Weasel vid idea in your head.

I was a late bloomer, first lime i heard the misfits was on garage days, and garage days was the first time i heard Metallica, and then i went right out an picked up earth AD and it blew my young mind, it was so heavy and fast i really couldn't wrap my head around it, but walk among us and legacy was my jam, more rock influence to groove to. On a side note, Hetfield is wearing an S.N.F.U. shirt on the Garage Days album cover, S.N.F.U. is one of my favorite bands, and maybe a video on them would be cool?

they covered last caress, we bite, demonmania, halloween, plus other songs live im sure. and havok fronted Son of Sam, which im surprised wasnt mentioned. he was also asked to front the misfits in the late 90s but turned it down due to afi gaining steam.

"The misfits are the punk band all the metalheads love" they're also the punk band country fans love, hence my profile picture. One of the greatest vibes you can possibly achieve is bombing through the woods in a shitty old truck with a misfits album blasting at full volume

Man…I remember the Misfits in the 80’s…kids were crazy for them. I like the early stuff ok. Those early records would sell for big money in the MRR personals section. I remember me and my buddy found a copy of Beware in a used record store for $8 I think. We found it at the same time and kinda fought over it but I let him take it as I didn’t even have a record player lol. Thanks for the video bud! I like watching your stuff as I grew up in those years.

Thank you for a tasteful documentary. You don't have to like Glenn Danzig but should respect him for what he did for rock & his honesty on his influences from Elvis to Morrison. You don't follow a guy like Danzig to pattern your life, but appreciate him for making it enjoyable. Enjoy the music and vocals.
