Waswaas-il-khannaas = The retreating whisperers (ie from the shayateen/jinn). خنّاس from root خ ن س (to draw back, to shrink away) means "one given to drawing back (epithet of the Devil who fails to come forward and assist his followers in their time of need and coz he slinks away when the name of God is mentioned). الخنّاس : the slinking, the sneaking, the devious one. خُنَّسْ also from the same root means "the planets which retrace their courses" (81:15. So I swear by the retreating stars) ie The Luminous 5 viz Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter & Saturn. Other interpreters say the word refers to the stars in their rising and setting orbits.
