The Evil Within was good. I feel like a lot of the issues with it was the fact that it was their first game and they didn't have Capcom throwing money at Mikami. I mean, look at all the changes that RE4 went through during development. We had, what, 4 different versions of that until we got the classic one we all love. Mikami didn't have that luxury with his own studio.
@drstrangelove95257 жыл бұрын
felman87 Idk about Storywise, Mikami has been very against Story in games, thinks it takes players out of the Gameplay. He originally had RE1 with just Cyborgs fighting ghosts and ghouls in a mansion with no plot
@drstrangelove95257 жыл бұрын
Dgaf Srh they got someone else to write RE1s Script, Mikami hadn't had a script written for the game, was called into meetings about it, said that story takes the players out of the game, so he thought why should there be a story at all. So Iowa (can't remember the rest of his name) was brought in and wrote the story of RE1. Which was a basic story, yes. But I always saw RE as a B-Movie style, took many notes from films like Dawn of the Dead, and some Italian zombie mock-offs of George Romero's Living Dead series. Also explains the pretty basic characters, like Chris Redfield being your Steryotypical B-Movie action hero spitting out one liners. So the silly basic story fits perfectly
@drstrangelove95257 жыл бұрын
Dgaf Srh also, I wasn't saying that Mikami's idea of the game was good, not at all, I'm saying that he's never been great with story in games

While playing the game, I felt like the developers were told to 'make a survival horror game', and without further direction, they were like '.... alright, then lets make a game that is the definition of survival horror', and the result is a very solid, resource management horror game that really hearkens back to old school survival horror. I forgive it for not scaring me, because I haven't been scared by a game or movie in quite some time, but seeing footage of the sequel gives me hope for some scares. It reminds me of an idea I had about a survival horror Zelda reboot that is open world and full of scares, with the closest thing coming to my idea being Silent Hill Downpour (the most underrated game of all time)
@18ps3anos2 жыл бұрын
"very solid, resource management horror game that really hearkens back to old school survival horror" I just can't agree with this unless by "old school survival horror" you meant "Resident Evil 4" specifically... Many fans of the genre were left disappointed because when Mikami said he wanted to go back to the roots of the genre, he didn't mean to bring back a modernized take on RE1, but instead recycle a lot of the successful concepts of RE4, which is a game considered to be by many the beginning of the end of the (old school) survival horror genre. We did only truly go back there with Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 remake (and RE8 followed on it brilliantly)

I only recently played this after doing a Resident Evil binge and deciding to finally check it out, and I have to say it started rough but by the end it became one of my favorite Survival Horror games ever. My only real complaint was the bosses being very trial and error with a ton of them having 1 hit death attacks, but other than that I'd say it's at least on par with RE4 if not in some respects better. It's significantly more difficult than any Resident Evil to me, and in a good way. I'm not a fan of soulslikes and I hate people constantly drawing comparisons, but I imagine that it's the same sort of feeling those give you: super draining to fail, but you keep coming back for more and when you finally win it feels AMAZING and earned. Also, as weird as it may be, I didn't struggle to understand the plot at all and actually think it's one of the better ways to justify such a varied horror environment having it all be a mix of a bunch of people's memories and fears. Like how enemies and bosses are all vulnerable to fire because of what happened to Ruben as a child, or the church being the monstrous occult area because of Kidman and Ruben's negative memories of their parents forcing their religion on them. It's a cool idea that may not seem obvious without hindsight, but is executed really well imo. Very Silent Hill/David Cronenberg. In fact the whole game reminds me of Scanners, Videodrome, and Existenz, which knowing Mikami and co.'s fondness for western horror films/directors was probably the case. ESPECIALLY with sheer amount of body horror in the game.

Like it will just kill itself without a second thought just to come after you.

On my PC the frame rate was constant 60 for me after latest patches (on release it was awful). No issues with textures either, but that is a common problem with the engine they were using. I think Evil Within 2 changed engines so both issues should be fixed (I hope).

Survival Horror games didnt interest me until I saw The Evil Within trailer. I thought it was survival horror in a Victorian Setting but its actually a mix of Inception meeting Silent Hill! You summarized the story right. I mean, a mystery stroy's got to start with a mystery and thats what they did. It's really not that confusing to me tho especially when Joseph comments that the locations are like "jumbled memories". The Evil Within really defines survival horror to me because of the number of ways you can chuck off enemies: traps, bottles, sneak kills to save ammo, fire and even your bare fist to buy yourself some time. As you've said, improvisation and I love that aspect of it.

I think the Evil within did the horror gameplay very well, always throwing you at stressful situations and you having to figure them out as you go can be pretty tense and scary specially when they throw a new enemy at you, my only issue with it is that it might hold this tension for waaay too long and it feels exhausting after each chapter making me have to take a break before playing the next chapter. I personally also never got a good hold of the mechanics so I never felt I was in control unlike resident evil where I knew how many shots it would take to get an enemy down. I havent finished it yet but I am not loving everything but I do love the creativity behind enemies and the mechanics behind using traps to your advantage is great.

I would also say this is one of my favorite games ever. Personally, I think the plot is brilliant. Sure it's a bit hard to follow, but you play the game from the perspective of someone who has absolutely no idea what is happening. Sebastian is a depressed, alcoholic smokestack of a cop; it makes sense to me that he's closed off and kind of a dick, also the short sprint time (though maybe not that short). I can forgive the sub par writing and dialog when the story did such a good job capturing my imagination, and the visuals were so interesting. This is one of those games where subsequent playthroughs made me like the game more and more each time. Also, you kinda discounted the story of the Executioner DLC, but I think that the connotations of that substory will be very important if Seb wants to get Lilly free from STEM in the sequel.

I avoided playing this game for many years because of all of the mixed reviews I heard. I just finished my 1st play through and I've already started new game plus. I love the combat and the creepy aesthetic the game has. Were I to change one thing it would be to take away how many bosses have 1 hit kills. Laura as well as amalgam alphas 2nd phase come to mind. As someone who enjoys both survival horror and adventure horror (I enjoyed Outlast and RE7 about the same for different reasons) I really enjoyed Evil Within and the DLCs following Kidman. I never really understood the story complaints personally as I actually found it rather intriguing and more interesting than I was expecting. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel. Also interesting factoid, the reason why a lot of characters in the game have Spanish sounding names is because originally the game was supposed to be set in Spain like RE4, but the devs decided to change the setting to the US but didn't really want to change the names.

Would've liked a Spain setting than Generic City in Dipshit Nowhere USA. Although Krimson is a good city name. So pass on name department.

The game will run like garbage if you have a monitor with 100 or Hz of refresh rate. I have a 144 Hz monitor ans I have to enable 60 Hz mode to play this poor excuse for a game

@@yunix2396 damn i hate how many developers just use usa for their settings We have a lot of countries with different building styles culture and fauna but i guess people love seeing the usa for the 1000 time Hell the usa itself has some interesting places but people always go to the generic us city style

I got to say I'm glad I checked out your channel after a friend recommended it to me. I'm a huge old head for a lot of survival horror so seeing we have the polar opposite opinions on many games has been an interesting experience for me. I really like and respect your opinions and you're making me look at certain games from a new perspective. Keep up the good work my dude.

I do reckon part of the reason Silent Hill can be a good horror is that, in supplying you with weapons, it makes you, the player, expectant of having to actually face the nightmare creatures, and what they represent...

You can put longer magazine tubes on shotguns even to the point where it's longer than the barrel. If you aren't worried about corners, you could do up to 16 rounds or even more if you had shorty shells.

It's so weird in a good way to hear Room of Angel over some footage of the game. I know some people see Silent Hill and Resident Evil as rivals but I tend to just see them as siblings. So hearing Room of Angel over Evil Within just kinda felt like "I gotcha bro" They just work so oddly well together so that was a cool choice on your end to have that music

Personally I hate all the instakill stuff. I can get how some set pieces can instantly kill you but bosses who are bullet sponges and some normal enemies being able to instantly kill you? That’s not challenging or immersive, that’s just annoying. The rest is good though

Most of the things mentioned here that were seen as "bad" were things I didn't really care too much about at all. lol As I said in the previous comment, the worst part of this game, the thing that ruined it to the point where I'll probably never touch it again after beating it once, is the cheap, BS, instant kill garbage almost every boss has. It doesn't add difficulty to the game at all. The only thing it did was make me hate a game I should have loved. Mikami, you need to work on your ideas a little more. I do wanna play 2, though. I've heard it's better.

Evil Within has a great mechanic that is the match burning which was a unique way to kill enemy's which would of been scary if the enemies only died by fire.

How in the hell did you manage to beat this game on Akumu Difficulty? I'd say that sounds like a Nightmare, but that's literally what 'Akumu' translates to in Japanese. How many soul-crushing, failed attempts did that take you? Last time I saw there was less than a 1% Player Completion rate on Akumu Difficulty. Why would you do that to yourself, ha, & how has no one else questioned that in the comments?

I agree I just think people rather not admit when something scares them. On that point though I can't say I was "scared" but when Laura chased me and all those near misses where she'd almost catch me it definitely got my heart racing, and blood pumping

@Jwallworth6 жыл бұрын
Arrogant Anarchist it’s not monsters that are scary. I don’t find many games scary in fact. Only other game that has ever had me as nervous is soma. For the same reason. It’s the chasing, the urgency to duck and dodge out of the way and attack at the same time. Facing Laura (the spider lady) had me so tense. Don’t see why you try to patronise those who find something jumpy. I didn’t find the dlc scary so clearly we differ.

The boxhead boss "Keeper" represents Ruvik's fears that he will never trust anybody, that's why it's a safe closed with wires. Laura, Ruvik's sister, of course represents his sadness and anger of his burned sister that's why you kill her with fire.

While I can't say the game is bad, I didnt really enjoy TEW. The gameplay wasnt particularly inspired, but what bugged me worse is how aimless it felt. Throughout the vast majority of the game you have no goal in the narrative besides go forward until the wacky dreamscape throws you sonewhere else. And by the end of the game you havent really accomplished anything. The lack of motivation made the game feel more tedious than it should have. I did enjoy the Laura encounters though I like the second game a lot more. The structure is more unique, the plot felt better, and it had more interesting moments
@AydarBMSTU4 жыл бұрын
Kind of opposite here. Tew2 has more open world design which is alright however it just can't compete with tew1's variety and pacing. Also it has much more straight forward plot. It's easier to understand but it's also much less subtle/interesting. When Sebastian found his wife it was pure soap opera tragic cringe. Tew1 was a lot more creative imho

the way people treated this game is as if they've never played a survival horror game before, it received a lot of undeserved hate, yes the performance and aspect ratio needed to be addressed, but the overall hate was uncalled for. after i was done beating this game i found out that i had a couple of bullets left in every gun and a few bolts unlike RE were you beat the game and you find a mini-arsenal and a whole bunch of ink ribbons left in your storage, this was a great sign that this game did things right.
@linuscontinental22237 жыл бұрын
this game is a blast. i don't care if you've made the scariest game of all time if all it amounts to is a moody game of hide and seek, that garbage isn't fun at all. i'd much rather have something that's interesting to play even if it means it's not as scary. besides being scared has never been what's attracted me to horror games the most, I just love the crazy monsters and environments and imagery that the genre has

“That garbage isnt fun at all” Its not garbage, its a different style of gameplay that many find fun. I find “find the monster then shoot it until it dies” games to be incredibly boring and repetitive and usually cannot play games with this mechanic. However, games where im not playing a roided up hunter sim scare and entice me! Just because its not YOUR style doesnt make it trash
@jwilsthem.c37807 жыл бұрын
if I can call any part of this game really scary it would be area where Ruvik's spawns in randomly and the screen changes color to signify that he's appeared. You can't do anything but run and hide but and wait for him to leave but holy shit did that one area freak me out. Best part about it is it's only that one area the entire games gameplay doesn't revolve around just running and hiding which I enjoy.

Have a playthrough of this game on my channel, and other than the hiding in the first chapter when it was required, hiding NEVER worked for me, and there is video evidence of this. out of line of sight of zombies, I'd hide, and oops, they'd sprint -stagger into the room and yoink me out of the closet. By the 1/2way point, I never bothered attempting to hide.
