Looks almost like the cabin on Alone :) what is the advantage of the stockade style? Great work!!
@0623kaboom6 жыл бұрын
my first guess why would be less logs so a faster build ... watching all these video's is making me jealous though ... poor health is keeping me cooped up in the city and i hate every single minute of it ... wish i was out in the bush like the pair of you get to
@doug94186 жыл бұрын
0623kaboom God Bless you brother, as I am also in the same situation, Sir, and it (definitely sucks! ) it's gotta get better right 😉
@Bushradical6 жыл бұрын
I hope both of you guys get to feeling better soon. As for you question Survival Lilly...The logs don't shrink lengthwise, so in a stockade style cabin you don't have to account for settlement of the logs like you do in standard horizontal log construction. BUT, the biggest reason we did it this way was 8' logs can be carried and set by ONE person, and The Aspen we used, isn't straight enough for much more than 8'. Also we had built 3 other log cabins but none like this so we thought we would give it a try.
@therealgirlinthewoods6 жыл бұрын
Hey Lilly- this is Aspen, the most prominent wood on our property. Rather than buy spruce logs, we decided to use what we had. In order for this to work, it is better off standing vertical as this is not a type of wood usually used in log homes, and it's also only straight in short runs. But that makes it easier to handle as well! Our other homes were made of spruce. We wanted to try something new, and the Aspen is beautiful and free! We have long eaves that will further protect the wood after we seal it. As long as the wood stays sealed and dry it should make for a beautiful, strong home! Thanks for your comment and for watching! Cheers- brooke

I don't know where to put this. I just wanted you and Dave to know what joy your videos bring me. I was raised dirt poor. Now, that's not a bad thing. I was in junior high before I knew we were poor. I learned so much because we didn't have money. Things like you don't actually need what you can't pay cash for and how to do it for yourself. Being poor has been the biggest blessing of my life. So liberating. Anyway, thank you for the great times you provide me. I so love Maisy Daisy and Moose and all the cats!

I have to chuckle I’ve seen many chainsaws used to rip lumber so I suggested to my husband back after hurricane Ike that we use the chainsaw to rip what was left of a pine tree stump to make it easier to get rid of lol he proceeded to tell me you couldn’t use a chainsaw in that manner. I told him about the mill frame set up designed for chainsaws lol bless his heart I wish he was still here so I could show him the full potentials of a chainsaw.

When I was a teenager I built several wooden forts/hangout places in fields and on the side of my moms house for me and my friends. I built one tree house back then and much later when I was 58 built a tree house in my front yard ash tree that was 16 feet in the air. May be someday we will live in a place like yours building our own homestead off grid. I'm 60 years old but still able to do big projects like that.
