pharaohyami5000 I’m not gonna lie to myself and say that this wasn’t a horrible battle and episode, because it truly was, but there’s a couple things where I can give Ash some credit. The night before his battle with Elesa, he was legitimately thinking of a strategy and did in fact take type advantage into account. He came up with a plan and went through with it. It wasn’t a good plan, but it’s certainly better than just winging it and going in blind. I feel like everyone who’s played the games can kinda relate to Ash in this moment. We’ve all probably went into a gym battle thinking one Pokémon is gonna sweep, but gets taken out early and you gotta rely on your other Pokémon that aren’t completely ready for the gym battle (especially if you ran out or didn’t stock up on revives lmao) and of course you’d bring all your Pokémon and not just 1 like Ash lmao.

I still sure - the idea with school is one of the dumbest, if not dumbest ever, ideas ever! When I first found out that Ash would go to school in this Saga, my first reaction was like "WHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT?????!!!!!!!". You can’t just show the protagonist experienced and competent in the previous season, and immediately send him to school the next season. What can he learn (except for the Z-Moves)? To the level, from which even Arceus’s heads will explode, in an attempt to find the right answer. But since this school was really needed, it could be delivered like this - Ash could go to Alola to deliver an egg there and take a break from adventure. But also, Professor Oak could offer him to attend school, for one lesson, to share his trainer experience with students and future friends. Since he recently took second place in the League, and prevented the end of the world. And having learned about Island Trials, he remains in Alola to rest more, share his trainer experience in the lessons, and successfully pass Island Trials. This would be appropriate for the further development of Ash, and the school would have a more justified place in his story.

Well he probably learn many things from pokemon school which he didn't in his journey, like in whole pokemon anime we never see pokemon using outrage but when Gladion's Lycanroc use outrage Ash know the effect of this move, he even learned about alola region and it's culture, who knows maybe Ash learned lot more and because of that he become champion.

I agree. Zach made some good points of course, but I feel a few things are way too big for Ash to simply forget. I mean yes one can slack off and get rusty, many other animes have show that, like Gohan in Dragon Ball Z, but they don't completely forget everything and still have some of their skills, so they wouldn't have a humiliating defeat like Panpore beating Pikachu or a very humiliating win like Ash vs Elisa, sure he won, but with how stupid it was it didn't feel good or earned, it felt hallow.

ZexalBrony479 Ash didn’t really “forget” everything he learned in Unova. He just made some serious lapses in judgement which happens in every series (yes even in DP and XY). He still knew the basics of Pokémon battles and type matchups. Just because Ash may use a Pokémon that has a type disadvantage, doesn’t mean he doesn’t know type matchups or has a valid reason for doing so. He knows them, but will ignore them if they don’t fit with a strategy he’s thinking of. For example, he sent in Oshawott against Pansage because it’s scalchop and deflect great moves or sending in Frogadier against Gogoat because of Aerial Ace. And for the Elesa battle, it was a horribly done battle/episode, but some bits do make sense. For one, Ash DID have a strategy. He took type advantage into account and decided that he would only use Palpitoad, and if you ask me that’s certainly more than just winging it. If you played the games I’m sure you went into a gym thinking only one Pokémon would sweep, but gets taken out early and now you gotta rely on Pokémon that aren’t completely ready. It happened to me. Not in the same way as Ash where I only bring one, but the general strategy

Ash's personality flip in Unova and Alola can be answered easily. Dude was on vacation. His vacation brain is so strong that he becomes incapable of taking training seriously. Not to suggest he doesn't ever get serious in those series, it's just that he isn't invested in becoming the best, he's invested in having a good time and exploring the region alongside Pokemon.

Which is just stupidly contrived in hindsight. Even in DP and XY aka the "competent" Ash seasons he isn't one to run head on to every battle and always finds time to chill from battling. Honestly, Pokemon apologists often direct me to this video if I said Ash isn't a well written protagonist but looking at it, it's a weak head canon trying to justify character stagnancy and inconsistency, which undeniably is the result of the writers' lack of planning on what to do with him as a long-term protagonist. Perhaps I'm not the most excited with the new protagonists in the new series as flaws like that is why I hold the Pokemon anime in a low regard, but it is honestly the step in the right direction to change protagonists and finally stop milking Ash. Pokemon as a franchise is just better off with this type of writing style.

I feel the art change sets a good tone for the series, in gens 1 - 6 Ash is serious, challenging himself to get better while taking on a tough challenge. Gen 7 however starts with him more laid back and basically in a "vacation" mode as there isn't a need for as much seriousness and that goes into the series of Gen 8 where Ash has a goal but he's okay with coasting on it because he knows in the end that even if he loses he'll still get his chance and is taking things as is (until he gets depressed for losing during a few episodes). The Tournament they are doing is honestly a nice change of pace and shows how much Ash had grown and how he's still willing to train with his Pokémon to make them trust him better and to learn even more on what his Pokémon want.

It was so refreshing to see how mature and old Ash acted in Kalos. It was a great experience after watching Indigo Leauge. When he left on his own for an episode he got so much more mature. After that, he got very powerful. It was great. The entire anime was so mature in a whole. He learned so much in Kalos about Pokemon, winning, not winning, and trials. He knew what was important. But at the same time I completely agree with your regards about Sun and Moon. I enjoyed Sun and Moon a lot. I have no words on Gen 8 because I haven't watched it.

So I wanna talk about the XY one cause I love that series so much. You are 100% correct on the theme and I couldn't have said it better myself, infact I feel this theme went along with his Pokemon too. Remember Frokie chose Ash cause much like the characters in XY Frokie was inspired by the power/skill Ash has. But started rejecting him when he was losing. It's not until Ash and Greninja have the one to one in the forest at Snowbelle that Greninja learns that win or lose, it doesn't matter just so long as they get stronger from the experience of fighting in sync. Hence why they master Ash-Greninja. If you look at when he loses in this league you will see that Ash is smiling and is fine with the results.....granted the show did hype him up to win so it's a slap in the face, but regardless this series felt like a combination of everything he learned up to this point.
