The evolution of Disney princesses shows just how far these heroines have come since “Someday My Prince Will Come.” For this essay, we’ll be looking not only at characters who are technically categorized as “princesses” in the Disney canon, but other female protagonists as well. While there’s plenty to discuss when it comes to the live-action adaptations of some of these stories, we’ll just be focusing on the animated originals here. MsMojo looks over the evolution of Disney princesses. Which Disney princess do you think broke down the most barriers? Let us know in the comments!

The idea that a female character having domestic traits is inherently bad is disturbing in this video. Context is important. Cinderella doing all that work was a direct result of her being abused by her step-family. It's not portrayed as a good thing. You can't realistically twist it to be "Oh, she does chores! What a good little woman!" if you pay attention. And Tiana's cooking was because she wanted to open a restaurant and be a chef. Which given that WatchMojo went hard on the "If it's not something a man would do, then it's bad because only traditional masculine traits are good!", they should've been praising to the skies as being a chef in a restaurant (let alone owning one) is STILL a mainly male dominated field.

I said the same in my comment. Nothing wrong with possessing those traits :) reminds me of the stupid episode of Gilmore Girls where Rory and her mom kept bashing Dean (Rory's boyfriend at the time) for appreciating a woman who enjoyed cooking and cleaning for her family.

Why was Tiana' s love of cooking a negative racial stereotype? It was an art she inherited from her father, something she was proud of. I LOVED Tiana because she was a proud, strong, business woman during a time when women were subjugated.

The early Disney princesses (Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora) may not be the most empowered Disney heroines, but why does everyone overlook the fact that princes are barely seen in these movies? (with the exception of prince Phillip in Sleeping Beauty, but he's also a passive character in the movie, since he mostly does what the fairies tell him to do) What I mean is, ok, the female characters in these movies aren't super strong or active, but neither are the male characters. It was a more traditional way of portraying fairy tales back then. Oh, and those princesses may not have any motivation in life except finding love, but what about their princes? They are also portrayed without any other motivation in life but to find their princess. Again, it's simply because animated movies did not have a lot of space to deepen their characters' personalities back then, not because of gender roles. On another note, in Sleeping Beauty, the fairies do all the work and eventually save the princess (yes, they do. The prince wouldn't have done anything without them). But wait, aren't they female? What, I thought women at the time were only portrayed as passive characters!

Each have their own characters if you look at it. Cinderella my favourite one was the story about how she was abused and how escaped it. She was literally abused to the point where she talked to mice. It didn’t even search for the prince she just wanted to go to the ball and experience something different from her life. She wasn’t the usual warrior like mulan that everyone now fantasies to be, strength now has changed to the meaning of physical strength . Strength is withholding through any difficult situation and moving on, that is what Cinderella did and so did mulan.
@Furienna
@Furienna Жыл бұрын
Cinderella is more fleshed out than Snow White and Aurora though. She is really feisty for being an abuse victim and doesn't seem to think about romance until after she meets the prince. Okay, it is true that she only can escape her wicked stepmother by finding a man to marry. But that is not her fault since that is what society was like for girls of that social class back in the day...

How is that nobody ever mentions that, as much as Aurora is "almost a secondary character" in the Sleeping Beauty, Prince Philip also does not have any lines during the second half of the movie. And I mean yes he defeats Malefica, but he wouldn't have even survived the prison without the fairies c'mon
@Wiiguy1606
@Wiiguy1606 4 жыл бұрын
The reason Aurora and Phillip go silent during the 2nd half is because their actions speak volumes. And in Aurora's defense, she was actually quite happy living in the woods with her "Aunts." She was just a little lonely because they never want her to meet anyone. Which is why when she met Prince Phillip, she was excited not because she knew he was a prince, it's more because he's the first real human other than her aunts she ever met and she even wanted him to meet her aunts rather than hide his existence. Also given that Aurora was CURSED to die on her 16th birthday by an evil fairy, she hardly had ANY Choice in the matter. Also, I imagine after Phillip awaken Aurora in the tower, he made sure to tell her that it was all because of her Aunts the Good Fairies, that he was able to escape and defeat Maleficent

Snow White - wanted love yes but she is only 14. But she was a servant but not her choice. She remained happy and optimistic no matter what happened from getting kicked out of her home and was almost killed. Cinderella - Cinderella again a servant but she was young she saw that as a norm because that was how she was “raised”.She never knew any better. All she wanted was a night out not a man. And afterwards she went back to her normal life she did not cry that it ended but happy that it happened. Aurora - was cursed as a baby,lied to,never got told about her royal heritage. She wanted love and life. She cried because her trust was broken. And yet she was willing to become “Aurora” and leave Briar Rose behind.

I literally just finished watching the show “Dirty John” about John Meehan and I have to say it put me on edge now knowing what con artists are truly capable of. Especially ones who pray on naive and vulnerable women. So Disney putting that plot line in was a pretty ballsy move. Almost like they’re sending a warning message to young girls to be careful and make a wise and calculated choice on who they end up with. A great way of writing their wrongs from the past. Like seriously, don’t marry a guy you just met...

Also given that Aurora was CURSED to die on her 16th birthday by an evil fairy, she hardly had ANY Choice in the matter when it comes to the plot. It's unfair to call someone a bad role model when they're literally cursed and can't do anything to take it away. The Good Fairies even said they couldn't take Maleficent's curse away but they weakened it so the Princesses could still be saved Also, I imagine after Phillip awaken Aurora in the tower, he made sure to tell her that it was all because of her Aunts the Good Fairies, that he was able to escape and defeat Maleficent. When you get down to it, Sleeping Beauty (the film) was actually different than Snow White and Cinderella because it's actually the 3 Good Fairies that drive most of the plot: Changing Maleficent's death curse into one Aurora can escape, hiding Baby Aurora, freeing the Prince, helping him defeat Maleficent. I feel perplexed by the fact cooking, cleaning and dressing up is a bad thing? Is it not all down to what the person enjoys doing? Why is acting girly now seen as a problem? Don't get me confused I think female power is important, I grew up with Buffy as my hero. However, as a young kid I also looked up to the Disney Princesses but I didn't think of a woman's place as simply a housewife or a maid. I often wanted to be the princess as they had all the adventures whilst the prince was relatively boring and had no storyline.

Did you really just say that Tiana isn't good feminist rep because she can cook and clean? lol....she worked her butt off to overcome racism, misogyny, and poverty to open her own business. The idea that Elsa and Anna are better just because they're sisterly love saved them is wild. Also, Cinderella WAS an active participant in her freedom (worked to go to ball but the stepmother ruined it) and never said anything about wanting a prince before she met him. Tiana, Mulan, and Merida are the most feminist in my personal opinion.

Moana is my favorite princess for several reasons: - Her movie is my favorite Disney princess movie - She has a great personality - She actually develops throughout the movie. Like how at the start of the movie she has no idea how to sail but learn that skill over the course of the movie - l LOVE ''How Far I'll Go'' - She doesn't have a love interest and even unlike Brave marriage isn't even mentioned in the movie There are more stuff I could mention but this is enough for now.

The message is simple, people!!! These Disney females are showing others and us that they want to be treated as more than just a trophy, princess, etc. We women need our voices to be heard, let's not be silent anymore and show those other people in the world that you have a meaning of being your own person. ❤💙💜💗✊👍💪

You consider Moana a "warrior" but not Elsa after _Frozen II_ ? We got a glimpse of the kind of fight Elsa has in her in the original _Frozen_ (underneath her vicious cycle of self-fear), and the sequel shows that it was no fluke--even if we don't consider her magical powers, Elsa seems stronger and tougher any of the other Disney princesses/heroines.
@ellynmacgregor8210
@ellynmacgregor8210 4 жыл бұрын
While I agree with you about Elsa in Frozen II, Anna is no slouch either. When she believes Elsa is dead (along with poor little Olaf), Anna takes matters into her own hands, realizing that the only way for her grandfather's evildoing to be undone is for the dam to be destroyed...and that she, as the surviving princess of Arendelle (as she then believes), is the only one who can carry out that mission: to do "The Next Right Thing."
@rbrtck
@rbrtck 4 жыл бұрын
@@ellynmacgregor8210 You're right, Anna has always had a lot of fight in her, too. I just brought up #1 (in my view) for brevity (for once!). Much of this is, of course, a matter of the opportunities the characters were given and the circumstances, to be fair. But going on what we're shown, Anna belongs with the front-runners, too, given how she fought off wolves (taking two out) and punched Hans right in the face and off the ship in the first movie (OK, it was a sucker punch, but it was vicious, and the best way to win against someone who had it coming anyway), and goaded the immensely intimidating Earth Giants into serving her purpose in the sequel. These are right up there with what Moana did, and that's in addition to the challenges that you pointed out. By the way, in my opinion Belle also deserves a mention for fighting against a pack of wolves and taking a couple out herself, in addition to standing up to the Beast, Gaston, and society. I have to say that I have somewhat of a bias toward Elsa, though, because I just love the contrast between her normal disposition and the kind of warrior-queen she is inside. The same goes for Belle (albeit not quite so extreme), since both are old-school, throwback Disney princesses in some ways (classy, graceful, demure) and thoroughly modern in others. It's really different from the kind of bluster that Moana often displays (she's more similar to Maui than I think she'd care to admit). Teddy Roosevelt, though blustery himself at times, would have adored Elsa, who in accordance with a favorite adage of his, speaks softly and carries a *BIG* stick. :)

I have to say that Belle is not kidnapped. She has full agency in every decision that was made in her stay at the castle. I think that people say that she’s abused but that’s not so. She sticks up for herself and asserts her self in every way possible. Is being locked in a castle ideal situation? no but she makes the best of it. And even in that Belle still had a choice; she could’ve said no and went back home and lived her life. She decided to be a hero and selfless. One other thing that people miss, is that beast gave Belle an adventure. Their friendship challenged her just as much as a challenged him. When your put into difficult situations that is what often happens.I think that people need to really see the nuances in this movie. There are a lot I don’t know if they just watch the movie Passively, But that’s not the way to watch this film. :-)

Your comment about Mulan not focusing on romance is misleading. She didn't object to marriage or her role in society which is why there is no conflict. If there was no war, its possible in a couple of years when she was less awkward, her story would have been the same as any other girl around her. You make it seem as if she wasn't interested and happened to find love along the way.

For me they are a bit boring movies but well...i love the other 11 movies. I think that the next Princess movie will be "Raya and the Last Dragon" and it will come out on November 22 2020. I just can't wait to watch this movie, it's gonna be amazing!

The slagging off of any princess who doesn’t act traditionally masculine is ridiculous! This is why girls like me grew up thinking that being girly or having traditionally feminine traits was negative! Femininity and the traits that come with it aren’t bad or negative. If you think the only way to empower women is by forcing them to turn away from femininity then you’re missing the point.
