I read a very convincing hypothesis that Africa and South-Asia still have megafauna because, as well as having a more stable climate, those are the places where humans have been present for the longest, thus allowing large animals to adapt to and co-evolve with human predation. To think that we missed out on these magnificent creatures by just a couple of 10,000 years... Anyway, great, in-depth series. Love it!
@mothlightmedia19364 жыл бұрын
Do you have a link for that because I am actually hoping to do a video why the African megafauna survived soon
@kristofwynants4 жыл бұрын
@@mothlightmedia1936 No, I'm sorry, I read that in a book on paleo-zoology years and years ago, I don't remember the title nor the author unfortunately, but it was actually about North-Americas megafauna and how it was very analogous to e.g. the Serengeti fauna. The book's main topic was on how North-America, due to it's geographical shape and position and to it's climate, served as a catalyst for mammalian evolution, because so many common species of the Pleistocene originated there. The other topic was the proposition that climate change had little to do with the extinction of the megafauna and human predation was the main factor here. And I think the author was an Australian paleontologist. That's about all I can remember, hope that helps. But the hypothesis makes complete sense though, if you ask me...
@nirodper4 жыл бұрын
@@kristofwynants it also explains why south america's megafauna was the last to be lost
@retardedvelociraptor4 жыл бұрын
The megafauna survived because they were furthest from the comet collision that took place in the Younger Dryas period. It had nothing to do with human predation.
@nirodper4 жыл бұрын
@@retardedvelociraptor "the furthest" what do you even mean. -south america is close to north america -africa had the least big mammals extinctions -climate change is a global phenomenom not only that, humans occupy the niche of large megafauna, that's the reason the earth can support 8 billion humans eating every day, the planet used to be full of large animals that consumed lots of food until humans came

@@soudino2723 Yeah. Just keep them in a zoo with high security and make sure shit doesn't go jurassic world.
@juanjoyaborja.30542 жыл бұрын
@@soudino2723 No. Most of their Pleistocene habitats are now gone, and can’t support them anymore. The only extinct group of animals that would be ethical to bring back are ground sloths, since a lot of modern day plant species are struggling because ground sloths were key dispersing agents of their fruits. But, while the resurrection of mammoths can be done with an Asian elephant as a host, it’s outright impossible to bring back ground sloths. Think about it, the offspring of megatherium were more than 3 times bigger than the adults of their closest living relatives, the Bradypus species. So, it remains impossible to bring them back as of now.

just a clarification, the dry climate doesn't come from water being locked up in glaciers, it comes from the fact that cooler air holds less water vapor. also once the deep oceans became very cold due to bottom water formation at the icecapped poles, the water that upwelled at lower latitudes was colder and so less evapotranspiration occurs (and also this serves to soak up heat).
