I want to point out a few things. 1. I have watched Harley for a long time an the love part seems to always get misunderstood. The love Harley is suppose to have is suppose to be one sided. The way it comes off as you describe it. Is both sided. As for 5:17 hearing that voice sounds pleasant. Then when you see the movie she sounds like this. 6:33 That deeps voice is what bothered me. I do not like her for the role. An as for the actor who you keep showing as Joker. The problem i had with him is. He hardly smiled and when he did. He had braces. Which the cool factor just dropped off the scale. When people take too many liberties with characters it makes people less likely to enjoy them. This was one of them. Also i hated that she was always out of costume. That clown costume is signature. I do not like the Whore outfit she wares. yes you think its liberating. News flash. Most of us do not like it. We want the original costume. A costume is suppose to make one stand out. Not wearing one. Makes you less important. This includes the Thick lipstick. 7:58 Whoa,whoa, whoa, whoa, Batman the Animated Series was meant for Teens to adults. it was not meant for kids. They just considered it safe for kids. Lets be clear. A kids show is BARNEY. Not Batman.

this may sound weird, but I dragged my mom to watch birds of prey (after I watched it alone at first). She suffered abusive relationships from man, and she loved the movie. I could see her eyes sparkle. She also always had a hard time making friendships with other women. She loved it so much she wants to take me to (another) rewatch. it frustrates me to no end to see men complaining about how birds of prey "de-sexualizes" harley quinn. she is wearing gold leather overalls and a hot pink sports bra for gods sake! that IS sexy! but more importantly it is practical AND showcases harley quinn's personality much better then suicide squad! suicide squad literally boils harley down to "joker's property" by displaying his ownership of her on her clothes and tattoos. but birds of prey actually show us harley's character through her outfit- like good costume designs should do. through the gaudy pom-pom sleeves we can see she is loud, fun, and quirky. through the overalls we can see she is vibrant and a bit childish (overalls are typically something a child would wear). they even have diamond patterns which is harley quinn's symbol, like superman's S or the riddler's question mark. i think the birds of prey costumes are definitely an improvement.

If you like Harley Quinn, I highly, HIGHLY recommend Harleen, this three issue miniseries that was published last year. It parallels Harley Quinn to Harvey Dent and shows a version of how Harley Quinzel became Harley Quinn. I say version because it’s DC Black label, so it’s alternate universe and very mature, but not to a gimmicky effect like some other black label stuff. Also, I usually care about the writing much more than the art, but the comic book has absolutely stunning artwork, in addition to film worthy dialogue.

@@gypsywoman9140 I don't know how well they would have gone together. That version of the joker kind of needs no backstory. They made a big point of it in the film. Harley is also a testament that true feminism means that it's ok to want to exist within the traditional roles of a wife and mother. Harleen is exceptional and always felt like she would be betraying her talent if she wanted that "simple" life, but true feminism means she's allowed whatever she wants, even if it doesn't fit the current idea of a "strong independant woman", because being brilliant and a wife and mother.... @chocotoasties26714 жыл бұрын
My only problem with modern renditions of Harley Quinn (and other Batman villains) was her being insane, and how her redemption arc was based on "oh she was abused". Harley, like many of the other Arkham psychologists, worked in Arkham to learn the inmates secrets and become famous. Joker appealed to her desire to feel special by telling her a sob story, making her think she was unearthing something new. There's also the fact that she liked him because he brought excitement to her life, and was willing to enable her patients criminal behavior, thus committing a HIPAA violation. I like Harley, but I don't like the "insane" Harley because it takes away her agency as a villain.
@ChaoticButterfly4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Honestly, the way she originally was, short of "showing the Joker," or being stuck in a life of crime, I think without the Joker, she'd probably, realistically, just try to get her life back together, like she did in the one episode where she was pronounced "sane." She was literally only into crime because the Joker is.

Yes, i am not a fan of the "insane" thing. Like if no one could do bad things because other thing that insanity. Of course when you go big with the villains (doing genocide for example) is not like is a normal person, but you don't have to go writing that he was "expose to the edge of the time and space" or something like that. Thanos for example was "not insane", he obviously suffered trauma and we could talk for hours about "God complex" or things like that, but the movie didn't did of that a whole thing. The same goes for the good ones and the Asperger thing, there's not detectives that work hard or are reasonable intelligent anymore; all is "he is a genius, finish the university at age 10".

God it’s so crazy how much I see myself in Harley. Loving someone who will never love you and is only using you is what I experienced before. My first love used me , screwed me over , and then turned around and left me for another girl he only knew for a few months. Yet I still loved him years after he left me. Also Harley is my favorite character to play in Injustice.
@evildreamerx4 жыл бұрын
TheLeah2344 you do realise Harley doesn’t love him? It’s more of an obsession, Harley Quinn has Stockholm syndrome, and she is abused. If you relate to any of this, you would get help, likeee lol
@SkaterBlades4 жыл бұрын
The reason people tend to like Harley Quinn over characters like Captain Marvel is that he has flaws, she loses but gets back up. She's an actual character whereas the perfect characters like Captain Marvel and Rey never struggle so are more caricatures of feminist ideals of the woman that never struggles and is able to do everything. Harley is engaging because of her issues, seeing someone who is always independent, doesn't take damage and always wins is not engaging because we can't learn from it as people. The heroes journey is all about obstacles and struggles, it's how we learn to better ourselves as people and I for one think it's a shame that one of the best examples for women isn't a hero, but a villain (most of the time)
@analogous6664 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Captain Marvel still struggles for a while but Rey is shown as this perfect person. Things just happen for her without struggling. Filmmakers need to understand that "a strong woman" is not the same as "a flawless woman".

I love Margot Robbie's take and protectiveness over Harley. She's fighting behind the scenes to make sure she gets her own movie, written and directed by women. She's trying to get Ivy introduced, a key relationship since the beginning but missing from the current DCU. She's also making sure Harley doesn't go back to her Suicide Squad 1 days (that much is obvious with her new look in SS2. ) Keep up the amazing work, Margot! It's much appreciated by us Harley Quinn fans

It's not just women who can identify with Harley. Paul Dini wrote in the intro to 'Mad Love' that he wrote her inspired by his own failed relationships. "It's happened to me, it's probably happened to you, and if it hasn't happened yet, rest assured someday it will. At some point you will meet that one special person who will put their fist through your heart." - Paul Dini

Such a beautiful discussion about HQ and the significance of her character. I've seen a lot of vids about HQ, but this is by far the most explored study regarding her impact on pop culture and her history. There are even key points and instances that I never realized about her that were very trivial! I love HQ so much for years and I'm happy she gets a short documentary that supports her character definition. Thank you for this! ❤️🖤

Guys, let me put an end to all the debates by saying - it's Margot Robbie. It's all her. If another actress played Harley, I don't think the movies would've been nearly as successful. I can’t say enough good things about the current Harley Quinn cartoon. It is seriously R rated but tackles a lot of Harley’s faults and has been building Harley and Ivy’s friendship. Also Ron Funches has ruined anyone else as King Shark for me.

My favorite versions of Harley are of course the original, the injustice version and now the new animated series one. I’ve always liked Harley as a character growing up. Her fun personality, her design and backstory were interesting to me. I also liked how in injustice that she finally got over joker and can lead her own gang and be an anti hero. And her new animated series captures her flaws really well. Can’t say much on the movie cause I haven’t seen it yet but I’ll check it out later.

Harley Quinn is a character very few have gotten right, in my opinion. Just like how the Joker is a hard character to get correct. She shouldn’t be just DC Deadpool, she should be Animated Series Harley Quinn, but should be expanded on. Like they do with the whole Ivy and Harley Friendship or Relationship however you see it. Or hell, that one episode where she’s finally proven sane and leaves Arkham, no joker, no anything. Yet is brought down to crime again by a mere misunderstanding and Bruce tries to help her. She is a deep character that is extremely hard to get right.

T-T I cling to that bit about Joker actually potentially developing the hint of feelings for her, only to try to kill her, because he doesn't like feeling that way.

@edward29624 жыл бұрын
I know it's addressed in the video, but I still think it's weird and interesting is that Harley started as a character in a kid's cartoon and slowly became this raunchy trope. I'm glad they've dialed that back in recent years. It's also worth noting that in real life you do have women who fall in love with mass murderers and are Charles Manson groupies etc. If Harley was a real person, I wonder if she'd be les Bonnie Parker and more Squeaky Froam ( at the original version)?
@zitronentee4 жыл бұрын
I like Harley Quinn, because she's neutrally relateable. She's chaotic and full of paradox, able to 'see perspectives and spectrums', yet unable to control herself. Well, she got her PhD anyway. Then again, has the knowledge, but not the wisdom nor insight. She's unlike Joker who is only chaotic but somehow controlled and clear sighted. She's the heart, and Joker is the mind.

It does actually give an origin story for Huntress, Black Canary's is hinted at but not fleshed out, the detective (forgot her name) also has a backstory. It's told through Harley's perspective but it really is more about what's going on with the others, and in Gotham; Harley just happened to be directionless at the time and kind of tagged along/accidentally got way more involved than she intended to be, but she just went with the flow because that's what she does.

I didn´t really think about it before but your video made me realize how i didn´t even pay attention to her clothes in Suicide Squad but i just loved every single outfit she wears in Birds of Prey. The difference between a look made only to be desirable and one that takes into consideration the perspective of the woman wearing the clothes. It made me want to go out and buy her clothes because it wasn´t only 'sexy' like in Suicide Squad, but also fun, practical and comfortable to wear, and cute! It looked like a woman dressing herself, because while a part of us wants to be 'sexy' and 'desirable', that´s far from being the decisive or main factor when we´re in front of the wardrobe. No woman i know would choose what´s basically panties with a tight, ripped shirt and high heels if she knew she´d have to go around jumping and kicking people, but they might put on a shiny golden jumpsuit and a pink top. I loved the scene where she goes back to grab a glittery fanny pack, as it makes a direct contrast to the scene where she grabs a party purse in Suicide Squad. Fun and practical Vs. sexy! We all get the appeal of both and I loved they decided to give her both.
