I don't get it when people say she does not have a wide vocal range. She has an astounding range. She also sounds better live then the recording's made of any of her tracks .

The main problem is she lacks the use of her diaphragm and she sings with a criminally lowered larynx, cause she wants to sound like a smoky contralto, and because she's not singing in her range her vocals are not stabled. she's a soprano soubrette naturally, her voice became raspier and darker so I would say she's a dugazon now. her head voice would be really beautiful, so she needs working on that, and stop that lowered larynx thing. her voice is really beautiful and unique you can recognize her from one billion voice and she sings with lots of individuality and emotions. she has her own style.

I agree. I still like her vocals but the vocal quality she's had in recent years is a combination of lowered larynx and being hoarse because of her smoking weed. Before she started smoking, her voice was a lot more agile. She may have been nasally as a youngster but she could do more actual belting instead of shouting. I think her vocal peak was 2008-2010.

chantoya17 I think what some people are also missing is Rihanna’s volume control has improved compared to 2005-2009. She lowers her larynx because her voice naturally is kind of small , girly and bright. She lowers her larynx on songs like desperado and LOTB so she can get the volume she wants but it is true she sacrifices a great deal in doing so. Her head voice has majorly improved ( Sledgehammer anyone ) she’s improved for sure but Rihanna is also over 30 now. Her voice wouldn’t sound like it did in 2007 even if she quit drinking and smoking altogether .

@@aubrey_reignz5484 Yeah I agree pitch is one major improvement from Rihanna over the years, and while she still can be inconsistent, I think Rihanna post 2007 has overall a much better grip on pitch and intonation and her vocals have become much less shaky, the only times her vocals still can go off-pitch I've noticed is when doing more complex riffs or long belts because she doesn't mix her voice properly

I just wish she stopped smoking cos Riri got (or at least had) so much untapped potential but bad smoking habits and lack of discipline is stopping her from being a true vocal force. She’s definitely lost some range in the upper register and is less agile now, her belting technique has gotten worse if anything, but she’s also less pitchy and has gained power and rasp to her voice. So she’s kinda stagnated 😞 I saw someone say Rihanna’s vocal peak was 2008-2011. What do you think?

2007-2010 that transition period from teenager to young adult I always wondered if she got the right and proper training at that period of her career she would’ve turned out to be an insane vocalist she had so many qualities a beautiful tone, natural vibrato, more ease and comfort in the upper register, melismas, agility, sweet falsettos. Of course she had a lot of issues aswell but she low-key declined/stagnated from 2012-present. Her voice is permanently damaged from smoking habits and bad technique. Her record label should’ve invested in some intensive vocal training but all they care about is 💰💰💰 they don’t care about the talent that needs developing.
