It's just annoying that the decision to include more diversity on the fashionista line up coincided with Mattel going broke, because it's that annoying situation where people who dislike the idea of diverse can easily pretend their issue is with the quality of the dolls and not their actual bias. I just wish we'd had 2010 fashionista quality with 2020 diversity.

the sad thing with mattel is that they are reactive to the market. they stopped being leaders. and them playing catchup is telling because the work they put out have been shoddy in recent years. when the designers for monster high spilled the tea on what went wrong with the line, it's so obvious that they try to cater to "traditionalists" and "concerned" parents leading them to reboot monster high and tone down on the monter aspect. also with this latest fashionista line, it's sad that they're desperate to appear progressive by including a lot of diverse dolls. I'm all for it - but it's such a desperate cash grab. also they REALLY need to have a set number of sizes and skin tones. makes buying clothes for barbies so difficult because sizes differ even within the "types" aka curvy. it's like they got new moulds for new batches. and skin tone too - it's hard for adult collectors to swap their heads with bodies because the shades are inconsistent. you can be diverse - but please set a standard to follow for upcoming collections and lines.

I completely forgot about the first Fashionistas. Why would Mattel not want to continue making them articulated?? It’s 2020, why are we moving backwards?? Fashionistas should be limitless when it comes to posing

Mattel did the first wave of Fashionistas articulated because Spin Master had come up with the fully articulated doll LIV¡. In 2009..When LIV became out of fashion and dissapeared around 2012 Mattel no longer had to compete with the articulated LIV and Fashionistas lost the articulation.

for me the first generation is perfect, they were the fashionistas, with high quality, makeup, accessories, their own personalities. After the reboot for me, the only thing I liked was the diversity, because the fashionistas seemed to be lost. This doll line means a lot to me, because it was at that moment when they arrived in stores that I saw something so bright and cool for me as a child, so when I was 10 years old I bought my first ken fashionistas cutie, hidden from my family of course, and it was there the beginning of my story with barbie.

I think the only dolls where I find it vaguely acceptable are the ones that are actually, legitimately unique. I don't think I've ever seen an albino AA fashion doll before, ever. Neither have I seen a vitiligo fashion doll. There's been wheelchair barbie dolls before, but they weren't available when I was a child and the new ones for 2021 look great (plus there's now a Ken which hopefully means another ethnicity Ken doll later this year or next). The only one I'm not the biggest fan of is the amputee with a prosthetic leg - that could've been a MTM doll and then I'd be on board.

The face mold that you like - the pale one with peachy hair in the blue 'denim' dress - it's the same mold as the doll with very dark skin in the rainbow dress. And the same mold was used for the first fashionista with freckles all over her ( with 2 pigtails)

I love the older Fashionistas after Fashion Fever got discontinued. I didn’t know they replace the Fashion Fever either! My favorite era has to be the late 2009-2013 ones. I used to own Cutie! But I have Sassy, tho after wanting her and Sweetie since I saw them in Dollar General in 2010. I think the Sassy 2.0 looks good in that leopard pants. Some of them is on my holy grail list. In 2012, they gave them names like Summer, Raquelle, Nikki, and Teresa. I definitely want the one with the pink dress back from the rainbow line. I actually used to have the Summer in 2014 then the Barbie with the leopard print skirt from 2015, right now I’m selling my other one with the be yourself shirt on. And the blonde with the denim dress. But I actually own some of them from different waves. It’s a shame that they got rid of her friends. You actually forgot about the other lines from the fashionistas. Jet Set Divas, Swappin Styles Giftset, Pet Giftset, and the BFF Giftset. The fashionistas line is my second favorite while the Fashion Fever is my favorite. But they called the Kens with the new body types Slim, Broad, and Original!

I was so shocked when the removable heads wave came along, because when I was young I used to swap my dolls' heads so often that I would break them and, when they came out I was so utterly shocked as a kid. And how my parents teased me when we were buying one of them, I will never forget that moment
@GellingtonDolls

My favorite Fashionistas were the first ones that came out, notably Cutie was my girl. I named her Marine. I didn’t like the second line that came that much but Sweetie was a must have for me. I named her Ally and she was Marine’s prettier twin sister. I love the swapping heads style, but I only ever had the most of the first wave. The other ones that came after the head swapping dolls weren’t as great until the articulation stopped completely and instead unique Fashionable clothes we got a basic budget 100 mile long line of dolls that aren’t that great. I have only two dolls from the current Fashionistas lines because most of them aren’t that special to me. I get that Barbie is trying to be more relatable, but did they have to ditch Barbie’s glamorous touch in total? All these dolls have a blank stare. The main Barbie dolls always make me frustrated because each doll has the same exact face, with zero make up or different facial features, and the same boring platinum blond hair. I miss the days when Barbie dolls were creative and focused on quality and never cheated you out of a good doll to conserve money and for lousy gimmicks like the Barbie doll Surprise set. Don’t even get me started on the Color Reveal Barbie where they successfully get you blow fifteen dollars for a glorified budget doll with a molded swimsuit.

I've bought Fashionistas solely for the new faces, hair and outfits. Some are often hit and miss but there are always a few that are pretty great. I know the lack of articulation on fashionistas sucks but you have to keep in mind that nowadays these dolls are pretty much produced to be sold at 10 dollars or under. Adding articulation would increase production costs which would mean Mattel would have to raise the price. This would make these dolls less accessible to a lot of people of a lower economic status. Mattel sells other articulated barbies (like made to move) at a higher price point if you want that experience. A fashionista is meant to be a little hit of beauty at a very affordable price. Something that a child could reach for during an average shopping trip that wouldn't break the bank of the parent. I see people attacking fashionistas a lot but unless I'm mistaken I believe it is literally the most diverse doll line in history. What other doll lines regularly feature as many skin, hair, eye, body types? Plus dolls with prosthetic limbs, albinism and vitiligo. The fact that these amazingly diverse dolls are so affordable and are in so many stores should be lauded by Barbie fans. I also think fashionistas are the last line that Mattel's done that really proves that Barbie is still a cultural icon. Curvy Barbie was the biggest Barbie news in years and the doll was even featured on the cover of Time Magazine. The truth is the fashionista line represents a historical shift in the toy world where now more than ever dolls are celebrating the beautiful diversity of everyday people. Ever since Barbie's beginning in 1959 the dolls have been a reflection of the society that produces them and the accepted values at that particular moment in time. These dolls are one day going to be remembered as cultural artifacts of a society that was largely shifting in its perceptions of race, disabilities, beauty standards and rigid gender roles. And that's pretty cool if you ask me. Anyway thanks for the video... this is really helpful for fashionista collectors like myself!!

For me the original wave was the best, my favorite are the Glam one I think that over the years this line is only worsened, the current ones are stiff and with horribly cheap clothes, i like that they wanted to be more inclusive with the various skin tones, various bodies and now also disabilities, but it is not that all these inclusive dolls are made by Mattel just to be talked about? In addition, these dolls were introduced AFTER Mattel lost the Disney license. Of course, if there is even a child who feels rapresented by these dolls then perfect, buy was it really necessary? Barbie never pretended to be realistic, all the criticisms that said that she led girls to have a low self-esteem in comparison to their body are false, the girls when they see Barbie do not think: ”I must be beautiful and thin like her” NO, they simply think of the stories they can invent

I only have 2 Fashionista dolls. My first one was from this line with swappable heads at 3:01. Mine is not in the picture, but it's a Sassy and she came with a purple glittery cat and accessories, so glad I didn't lose them over time. I remember being amazed at this doll when my parents got me her. She's also my first articulated doll, and one of my fave Barbies. The other Fashionista I have I bought in 2016, I think. It's the blonde one at 9:38. I remember liking her pose, but I changed my mind when I saw she'd be just stuck in that pose. Her legs are in a weird position, one leg down and the other up due to the angle her body is. I think she looks cute, I like her face and everything, but I'm not buying dolls stuck in weird poses like that anymore. I'd buy these new ones if they were articulated and their clothes were better quality, fashionable. If there's no quality, what's the point? And last basic Barbie I bought was so basic I got disappointed, cus she has so little articulation, her arms can move only up and down, her head can only turn to the sides. Maybe I'm wrong, but from what I know, not even the basic Barbies in the past were that cheap. Unfortunately Mattel just keeps cheapening their products, quality makes all difference.

Thanks for generating a Fashionista time line. Although I was aware of this Barbie line when they came out, I wasn't thrilled by them because the Fashion Fever, Barbie Basics, and other doll lines mentioned in a comment by alejandromolinac were more impressive. I thought the early fashions were garish and hideous, the Barbie Barbies looked too similar as did the Nikki dolls. However, when Mattel brought in the 2014 Fashionistas line, I became interested in the series. I I unfortunately missed getting the blonde Skipper-faced doll with the half-shaved head - darn, darn, darn! - but I got the Raquelle? doll wearing the cat top and the pink skirt and the brassy blonde Desiree/Nikki? doll wearing the black top, the turquoise print skirt, and the lion medallion. I love the variety and the diversity of the more recent lines. The fashions are so-so, but I'd rather have striking dolls because I can borrow other doll fashions or even create my own, if so inclined. I enjoyed seeing your collection and hearing your comments about the dolls and their fashions. I'll be back ;-)

Tbh I’d totally buy some of the ones I never got back then as an adult now bc of how much I love them

The long haired Ken looks so much like my husband when we first met. Need him! I also would love to get the first curvy Barbie. I'm also curvy with black and blue hair. Some of the less often seen ones would be a great addition to my collection as well like the really dark skinned one, the tall one with the afro, and the bald one.

LOL, I love how the earlier fashionistas had such 2000s fashion! Also, the Kens seemed much better quality (with actual rooted hair AND articulation). I like the diversity of skin tones, hairstyles and body types they have now, but I do wish they still had articulation like they used to. They have become kind of cheap...

Just wanted to say that the face mold of the doll with orange hair, bangs and denim dress is called June, and the dark skinned doll with the rainbow dress that you have from the following wave has the same head mold. It's one of my favorite head molds, as it is so versatile. I don't have the orange haired girl yet, but I do have rainbow girl, and she is really gorgeous!! Just realizing this video is 2 years old, so this is probably old n information. If not I hope it's helpful. The latest doll with this sculpt is in the Sunshine and Sparkles Color reveal wave. Her hair is peachy, and her makeup is beautiful!! Love your posts!

I have every female Fashionista since the Evaluation phase of this line (2014/2015). I didn't collect this line before that as I was busy with Barbie Basics then. I absolutely love the diversity and colorful line even if they are a bit basic in sense of fashion and accessories. I hope that this line does continue for a few more years as they are progressing more and more in diversity which is much, much needed!

The articulation in those fashionista dolls is far superior to today’s made to move dolls. The ball joints are so smooth. I don’t know why they stopped using it. I’ve been collecting the early articulated fashionista dolls for a while now

Thanks for that time-line. I started collecting Fashionistas when they started with curvy, tall, and petite dolls. I have purchased a few that were from the beginning line. I didn't know about the changeable head doll til just recently so I searched for them on Ebay and picked up a couple. I don't buy every doll just the ones that appeal to me. I will be purchasing the doll with the hearing aid as soon as I see it on the shelves.

Barbie Fashionista was the doll that got me into collecting in 2009, my first one was Glam¡ she has gorgeous hair¡ so fun to comb and style. I got all the articulated Fashionistas, I stopped when they lost the articulation. With the first waves I remember everyone complaining about the same head molds over and over. Now the dolls have many headmolds and body types but the fashions are dull and childish. We want Barbie to look like a grown up¡ children like playing they are grown ups with Barbie. Bring back high heels and stylish shoes instead of only white sneakers.

Interesting that your doll with flat feet and (very cute, in my opinion) black shoes (at 8:18) is different from the promo photo of the doll (at 8:08). In the promo she has yellow heals.

As a Barbie collector myself (whose collection consists of the era of my childhood. Which was mid to late 90's though I do have a few 80's Barbie), I was estatic ro get my daughter some last Christmas. She has 11 dolls total, including a few from the fashionistas collection, and while the dolls are beautiful and I appreciate the diversity, I couldn't help but notice how lighter they feel. The plastic seem cheap and easy to break. I think it's all the barbies of today. I've never encountered newer Barbie dolls until now, and the body quality is way different than the Barbies I encountered growing up. IDK. Their articulation seem a little stiffer...though I do acknowledge barbie dolls from my childhood were way stiffer, the quality was much better LOL I may start getting my daughter barbie dolls from older generations. Maybe the early to mid 00's. With today's quality, I'm unsure how long they will last.

My only classic fashionista is wave 2 "Cutie". She is not without flaws, but still overall better quality than modern ones. I was disappointed when they stopped articulating them. I didn't get another fashionista until they released different body types and have since gotten a few more. They are a bit cheap, some of the fashions are lazy, but some of them are decent. Let's be real here, they are just a way for Mattel to both appease parents/adults demanding diversity while also selling marked up fashion packs. (Does a t-shirt dress warrant an entire doll release?) Even the packaging has gotten lazier and less appealing. That said, if one has a decent outfit or a unique face, I might l still get it. The keepers get MTM bodies and the losers get stripped of their clothing and donated. Mattel is aware of this sort of thing which is why we will likely never get posable fashionistas again outside of the MTM wheelchair dolls (probably because the other current articulated playline bodies cannot properly sit upright) and instead we get BMR1959 which costs double what past MTM dolls did, and I don't think they are wearing $15 more in clothing and a doll stand.
