Art hoe is great and still is my aesthetic tbh. c: If you watch the tumblr aesthetic video from Moderngurlz's channel, she explains it's an aesthetic started by black women who wanted to see more online aesthetics with poc rather than just white people. the "hoe" part is also a feminist reclamation of the word since it tends to be a derogatory term towards women.

I remember all of the trends in the video but except for the fangirl I have never really fit in any of these. In the early 2000's I became a fan of classic goth and metal music (a lot of it from the older times - 80's, 90's) and associated styles too (though it has always been more about the music than the looks for me) and that has stayed with me (and I've added more interests, like anime, and other kinds of favorite music, especially post rock and j-rock). I guess the indie grunge is what I can relate to the most as it takes inspiration from those older subcultures.

When you mentioned the “not like other girls” I CRINGED SO HARD! I was super into that when I was young and always tried to differentiate myself from other girls. In the past year many artist in the art community started redrawing those iconic “not like other girls” drawing and making the girls be friends or girlfriends. I remember feeling really happy/sad when seeing those drawings because I wish I saw those when I was younger so that I wouldn’t be afraid to be girly growing up. I do occasionally try to stop myself from being girly and it’s been a real challenge because there’s time I wanna be girly, old habits die hard

I like to think that those artists redrawing the "not like other girls" memes as friends/girlfriends are actually persons who grew up seeing the original images but still managed to overlook the antagonism while building theirselves to adulthood, and aim for this wholesome, inclusive culture in the end. I too remember being a bit self conscious about "not being that girl who likes girly stuff" when I was 10-12. I'm glad I overcame this mentality and I'm glad kids nowadays can grow up with those new revisited memes. Hope you feel more okay with being girly in the future. Keep it up !

core memory unlocked omfgggg. on my last day of eighth grade, circa 2013, i was wearing my knee high converse with those split leg checkered hot topic jeans, my pierce the veil shirt, and a ton of those rubber bracelets. after the graduation speech me and my friends ran around like idiots shouting the lyrics to "na na na" by mcr and signed each others arms instead of the yearbooks. we drew mustaches on our index fingers and held them up over our lips so it looked like we "had mustaches". i remember the girl i had a crush on was wearing a tardis shirt, galaxy leggings, and had a mustache necklace. the next day, first day of summer, she invited me over and showed me tumblr for the first time on her living room desktop computer. then we kissed. for a few weeks we "dated" - as much as 13 year olds can date with no drivers license LMAO - until our parents found out. elise if you read this i hope you are having a great life

Tbh I was one of the "not like other girls" girl back when I was a teen. I was super obsessed with trying to make sure I seemed "different" than all the other "plastic girls". Not only was that so misogynistic and unethical but it also had a huge affect on my own happiness and mental well being. I remember I got into makeup and dressing up quite late but when I did get interested, I started hating myself for being like that and also forced myself to like things that were traditionally masculine. It wouldn't help that I was considered a "tomboy" for having short hair and no makeup. I felt like I had to stick with that that narrative against my will.
@doid4354

I had a similar mentality, I'll admit. I saw girls being feminine getting bullied for it left and right. I mean... I ended up also bullied for not fitting that stereotype, but for some reason I thought being feminine would end up worse for me. On the flip side, I also felt sad because dressing hypermasculine wasn't my thing either. Why did I have to choose between two rigid forms of self-expression? Well I choose neither. The way I look can be ambiguous and it makes people uncomfortable sometimes. And although it makes me feel like an outcast, I would much rather face the judgement than be boring.

@@doid4354 I think our experiences are likely from the misogyny we learned and are currently unlearning. And yes I agree, we don't have to fit a single type or the other. Tbh same, idk why and when I started to absorb the worst out of "tumblr mentality" (despite not actually using tumblr). I was your classic case of "not like the other girls" and "gatekeeping girlboss": stuck up, judgy, narrow-minded even though the one thing i openly branded myself as was "understanding" and "good listener". No wonder I was miserable af I was being passive aggressively toxic the whole time. Now that I grew out of tumblr and actually developed my personality pass trivial stuff I now have much easier time with communicating with people lol

I completely relate to that to. I saw that kind of stuff at a very young age and almost completely resented other girls for wearing pink and stuff. I bought “boys” toys and clothes for YEARS and then, while not ever even being in tumblr, almost completely followed every trend to a T! From elementary school I was saying I was not like other girls, wearing docs, wearing way too much flannel, SO MUCH MARKIPLIER MERCH… could I go on? Yes, but I must say: these experiences helped me realize how bad that mindset was and also helped me find an identity. Lol, I feel like a lot of closeted lesbians completely hid in their “I HATE GIRLS!!!1!1! I’m a TOMBOY!” Phase, as Me and a ton of others Had lol. But yeah, seeing all this come up again, makes me realize that all of that and while I was growing up, I wasn’t alone. Lol! Thanks

From late 2015 to mid 2017, I swear there was this distinct "Tumblr Girl" subculture that worshipped TOP, Melanie Martinez, and was _obsessed_ with Yuri on Ice and Voltron when they released. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?? Vaporwave and commentary YTers like Pyrocynical were popular among that group too. My personal theory is that the subculture came from picking up the scraps left from older ones (like the ones in this video) and combining them into a single Fangirl Ultimate™.

if I’m being honest I miss that era so much 😭 like yeah looking back it was cringy as FUCK but you know what? I was happy as fuck too. I was a carefree middle schooler who never took anything serious and was in my own little bubble completely unaware of the fucked up world we lived in and I miss that everyday of my life. Every time I watch videos like this I just get such an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia and sadness because I truly wish I could go back to this era. Fuck I know this may be the nostalgia talking and I know I got my rose colored glasses firmly on right now but things truly were/felt sooooooo much better back then. Life just felt like it was going way slower then it is now. I think one of the reason why this era has such a strong hold on me is because of the fact that back then I was so happy and didn’t suffer from mental illnesses and a chronic illness like I do now.

Tumblr gets shit on a lot but honestly, when I was on the lowest of my life as a queer tween in a country where you could be killed for being queer, it introduced me to fandom culture where I met a lot of friends, learnt about mental health and self care and found other queer people and communities and really understood myself. It has it's flaws, but I think it's done so much more good than bad.

You mentioned that you can pinpoint specific styles and subcultures back then, but you can't now - I don't know how old you are but im probably quite a bit older (35) and I started noticing in the early 00s that I could see what 80s styles were like, but I couldn't see what 90s were like, assuming they didnt have defining styles. A few years later, I could DEFINITELY pin point the 90s style because I was further removed from it. I remember in around 2012-2013, looking at this sort of tumblr stuff and seeing a 90s revival thing happening with certain aspects of fashion and thinking, I guess 00s didn't have any defining subcultures/styles. Obviously now we can see that's untrue; by around 2016 or so I could see OBVIOUS y2k / 00s trends. But once again I assumed the 2010s just didn't have them. As this video shows, that was not the case. So I almost promise you that in a few years, maybe 10 years, you'll have NO trouble pinpointing today's styles and trends.

I think it's because at the end of the day, internet aesthetics are just that-online. I was 90's goth, but I knew about pastel goth, even then. By the early 2000's, I was occasionally adding pink and soft blue to my corpse paint palette. And I never really met anyone else doing this, in some of the least interesting parts of PA. Some people were still scared of me, even in the 21st century. Others used me as a chance to teach their kids about tolerance. Or just to introduce themselves, because it gave them something to talk about. Which is why I'm watching the fashion trends of a website I've never used. Because despite all the grief us weirdos put up with, we won. The generations after us took up that torch and ran with it. Individual self-expression won. Not being able to tell a decade at a glance? That's magical. Let's not take it for granted. Whenever there's an advance, there's a backlash.

It feels like most of the unhinged users have left to Twitter and all that's left is the reasonable people with brainrot, bit still capable of critical thinking (for the most part), so it's pretty chill. There's also nothing that gives me the dopamine hit that finishing a book and going on its tag gives me.

Here's a thing that happened to one of my friends. I was there. Basically, we were walking down the sidewalk, talking about something meaningless. I think it had to do with a movie. Then this bus screeches up, stops next to us, and a bunch of people with “Down with Cis” shirts climbed out and started beating him up. I was punched and kicked a bit too, but I managed to avoid brutalization by going for their faces. After figuring out what’s happening, I started attacking them back, getting them off of him. He was quite injured but I called 911 and he made a full recovery at the hospital. I was fine, with only a cut on my arm that they patched up.

I’m very nostalgic for the emo/scene tumblr era of 2011/2012 however I think it’s important to point out how much it romanticized self harm and made it a trendy aesthetic. As someone who was in this scene and had a lot of friends irl who used tumblr, can confirm many of them had large amounts of scars because it was so romanticized at the time. It's still very much a thing, I was friends with somebody very very into it, and she ended up influencing me into it and Im still struggling with anxiety and self harm. I don't think it will ever go away, and it's really sad because it stays with people forever and it's not talked about enough. By the time people realise it's wrong they've already gotten too old to be really listened to by the other younger members of the community, and so it's ignored and young teens continue to romanticise harmful behaviour and convince themselves that's it's okay and even desirable.

one thing i think these aesthetics really did right was (aside from the skinny jeans) focusing on pretty comfortable clothing. t-shirts, flannels, oversized sweaters, leggings, ugg boots are all INCREDIBLY comfortable, way moreso than things that are popular now (as a plus sized person, you couldn't get me to wear low-waisted jeans or baby tees at gunpoint). all these fashion subcultures were overwhelmingly skinny and white, but at least back then they were clothes i *could* wear as a chubby teen. i wonder if in 10 years we'll be looking back on tiktok fashion this way? i don't use that site but it's definitely the hub for alt-fashion teens the way tumblr was in the 2010's. (edit: funny enough, i wear fairy kei now, which was really big on tumblr in the 2010's! it's not as big now, but you're right-- it's the 2020s, time for all the 20-somethings to wear the fashion they always wanted but could never afford when they were teens)

I felt like an outcast at that time, and me and my friends (always girlfriends) used tumblr to communicate how we felt about life and love. The problem with me was that I wanted to wear cute clothes so bad, but being a boy in high school was awful, and wear "girl clothes" was impossible. I had to stay in the norm, and I still feel like I could have enjoyed much more if I knew what trans people were at that time.

Every time I watch a video like this I unlock a memory from that time in my life. Glad to know im not the only girly with these kind of experiences. It can often be difficult to tangle with the childhood so many trans people are denied so it's important to hold onto those positive and euphoric memories.

same but with boyish clothes, we used obligatory uniform shirt and pants/skirt, and I seriously didn't want to use a skirt, just pants like the boys but of course it was against the rules, in the end I didn't transition but now I'm free to never wear skirts

Same, I wasn’t on tumblr but the “I’m not like most girls” thing stuck out to me and it was only until I took a step back when the pandemic started that I realize that I wasn’t like most girls, because I wasn’t a girl. Turns out I’m just a trans guy who likes fem things, which is why I would REFUSE to wear dresses and only dress with t shirts and pants but wanted to keep dresses “just in case”

I was too young/ broke to embrace the 2014 grunge when it was starting, so by embracing it in my 20s I feel like i’m healing my inner child

I always imagined the dripping slime as pastel blood lol. This was so cool and fun. The early 2010s still feel like yesterday to me, yet this made me feel nostalgic and reminded me of times I never really stopped to realize and appreciate had gone by.

I was a teen during the peak tumblr girl years but unfortunately I didn’t get to transition into a girl until later so I missed out 😭
