The Evolution of Theatre at the Cockpit Theatre, Drury Lane
The Cockpit was undoubtedly the first theatre in what is today's "theatreland" of London. Laying outside of jurisdiction of the City of London's strict rules on theatres, the Cockpit evolved from a cockpit to a major theatre until other theatres with more modern facilities slowly took over. Today Drury Lane is known as the epicentre of London's theatreland but when the theatre was running for nearly 50 years it was on the northern boundary of the city. Today a Peabody estate covers the land that once housed London's first "theatreland" theatre.
