The Evolution of Zip Closures

Zip closures, or zippers, revolutionized fastening with their invention in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Whitcomb Judson’s 1891 patent for a "clasp locker" laid the groundwork, but it was Gideon Sundback's early 1910s "Hookless Fastener" that perfected the design with interlocking metal teeth and a slider mechanism. By the 1920s and 1930s, zippers became widely used in clothing and luggage, further solidified during World War II. Their adaptation in vacuum seal travel bags showcased their versatility, creating airtight seals that efficiently compress and protect contents.
