"Antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England, documenting the treasures she finds buried within. When an intriguing letter summons her to the small village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train with her assistant a day behind.

I really hope they don’t. It’s a good story, fully told and with plenty of loose threads that weigh on the mind, like all good horror should. A sequel would only ruin the excellent ending that was crafted for this game.

The voice acting in this is fantastic, real stand-out performance. This is Disco Elysium-level VA quality. Also Douglas is precious and I want a spinoff game with him as the protagonist.

For the most part, this feels like the spiritual successor to the Laura Bow games, but towards the end it certainly swings pretty drastically towards a true horror point-and-click adventure game. Man, that ending........ I hope they make a sequel.

Agreed. Any time a game lets me end it early I go for it. Loved that in Tides of Numenara during the intro you can choose to die rather than go on with the plot of the game.

Please watch the game before reading this as there are spoilers. You have been warned. While part of me feels bad for what happened to her, I can’t help, but feel she brought all this on herself. There were so many warning signs and red flags and coincidences that even an extreme sceptic would question all of this. Ultimately, to me, she did it not out of genuine ignorance, but out of a selfish desire to free her father regardless of horrible consequences to others that was clearly present. I do like the small detail that shows how evil the being is. It could have just blown up her father like the nurses before him, but just to twist the knife the thing makes his daughter bash his head in with the urn they, father and daughter, cherished, that’s twisted.

I honestly think the game should have had multiple endings including good ones. I think the storyline did not present any choice but to force the player to go that path, even though as a player, we wouldn't have done it. I also don't think she initially knew how harmful it was, she assumed it was the goblin that was bound there and wanted to be freed, and not a more powerful ancient god (except in the last letter - at which point she should have stopped). I also looked up Abraxas and there was a real-world cult around him in Greek times. I didn't like the bad ending, especially forcing the player to choose that. One good part of it was Tiller and his family escaped the village and he at least comes to visit her and believes her story.

@@abyrupus Everything about Abraxas' tomb and the last collectible page from her father's journal (which the author of this walkthrough didn't bother to pick up for some reason)* were just screaming "STOP! TURN AROUND AND GET OUT!". By that point it should have been 100% obvious to her that it's clearly not the poor hobgobo she is about to set free, so it's hard to disagree with CybrThief here. That said, I don't like the ending either. *putting it short and simple, it confirms that there is something sinister and far more serious than Saxnot.

It feels so weird and unsatisfying that the game overtly tells the player exactly what's happening well before it does -- openly spoiling the twist on purpose -- but then not giving the player any way to respond to that information. It's doubly dissatisfying, from a narrative perspective it felt sinister enough already without them all but literally turning to the screen to announce the ending nearly an hour in advance, and from a gameplay perspective it's frustrating to know this is wrong, and have no reason you can't just change course, but not letting you do anything about it anyway.

SPOILERS BELOW- The three unresolved things I have are 1) The milkman thing obviously 2) The cats/cat 3) The priest's illness 1) Apparently there is some dialogue in the pub about villagers disapproving of someone eloping. Villagers ambushed him, stuffed him with flowers. If you take those flowers to the witch she tells you it's a powerful hallucinogenic flower (the same kind in the barrow, making Thomasina an unreliable narrator when shit gets purple, btw). It was just the villagers being dicks to someone eloping and trying to stop them leaving Bewlay. 2) The motif of the cat's face being shown seems really similar to Saxnot, to me. Saxnot, in his weakened state, can only manifest in the real world in cat form. 3) Saxnot says that while Abraxis has been bound by the incantation, he rages against it and tries to corrupt others, slowly succeeding in doing so. Feels like this is what happened to Shoulder, and what happened to Thomasina's father to an extent. A priest is a holy man, and represents a kind of resistance in Bewlay towards the cult. The priest does not realise he is being made ill by a competing God. Bloodletting helps because he is literally blessing the ground with his blood, keeping Abraxis at bay. The priest is particularly holy because he was literally born in a church.

Always nice to see a new adventure game. While the retro style is nice I think games such as Curse of Monkey Island and Runaway: A Road Adventure and Detective Gallo look much much better with their cartoon type style. It'd be nice to see more developers of adventure games go for that aesthetic.

I assumed it was her unborn baby brother that her mother had a miscarriage with after her father's "accident". Remember her father talked about his wife being pregnant while he was at the excavation. Obviously she wasn't pregnant with Thomasina at that point.

Yeah, that puzzle was stupid. In the end I realized that the puzzle "clicked" after 10 letters, and there were ten letters on the three stones. So I tried every combination of the groups of letters iaw, ab, pa and caz. Fortunately I guess right on the second or third try.

Might be just me, but its a bit annoying how she continue to go towards something that clearly is a trap, and will doom others, yet no choice to stop. That annoyed me. A game with no choices then doom, so made me not wanting to play it myself. But other then that good : p

The ending confused me at first, but then I found it suited me. Thomasina and I have similar personalities, we are both stubborn, believe too much in logic, and curse those superstitions. Now I find it necessary to respect the world, including everything, because there are always some things far beyond our understanding. It is good advice to admit your ignorance. By the way, keep fighting, who knows what could happen then, angel or demon, that is also what developers desires ? Perhaps.

I entirely agree with you. My interest was piqued but the part inside the barrow overstayed its welcome. Puzzles are a staple of point'n'click games- but here it looked like the late section was put in to fill some sort of requirement... And I have a hard time believing that such a strong-willed and rational character like Thomasina would fall for such a ludicrous promise of healing for her father.

This game was pretty good at subverting that stuff. Town's drunk and zealot priest turn out to be your true allies with good personalities, Arthur being a truly good man and priest nature loving scholar. Also main character being a woman of science who needs no man and dismisses local folk lore as a fairy tale pretty much turns against her. Also her drive to heal his father is also subverted: It also shows how far she was filling to go in order to heal his father on just a shady promise that blood ritual might help him.
