The guillotine was an execution device which was used heavily in France during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. It was even used up to the 1970s and the guillotine would take the heads off the French King and Queen and some of the most infamous politicians including Robespierre. But the first guillotine execution was performed upon a man who was a highwayman.
Nicolas Jacques Pelletier was a thief who robbed a man in Paris, and it was considered a violent robbery and for this he was sentenced to death. His death sentence was confirmed a number of times whilst the guillotine was being tested by executioners. But then the time came for his execution and Pelletier became the first person to be executed on the guillotine. He would be executed less than a year before the King was.

I cannot imagine the fear of being walked up to a guillotine. Seeing that blade knowing it's going to slice through your neck. Getting lowered onto it, hearing the brace lock your neck and then hearing the blade being released. You must have felt that blade hit your neck and slice through your it. It's utter rubbish death was instant. Your head would have been alive for a period of time. The pain must have been excruciating.

It is quicker than having your limbs torn open to insert pipes that will pump poison into your body.

Still a more merciful form of death than some of the other methods being used at that time. In facts why the guillotine was invented, to act as a better form of exexecution than the other methods which were viewed as too brutal and inhumane.

@@starchild3215 Yes, I would much rather have the guillotine or firing squad over the other tortuous and inhumane methods including lethal injection. I believe with the weight/speed/momentum, and the curved, sharp blade that death was instantaneous and painless.

@@bobhill3941 but imagine you can still think for a while without a body , and it’s very bloody too. Firing squad would be my favourite.

If I remember it correctly this case, 3 years into the revolution (but Louis XVI was still offcially ruling France the in spring of 1792) was an ordinary criminal case, and had nothing directly to do with the revolution. But later the guillotine would be used as a revolutionary instrument for masskilling. The king and queen were ammong the killed. But I guess that the guillotine was still in use during the restored french Kingdom 1814 and (after the 100 days) 1815-1848.

@@jamesfowley4114 I tink the last execution in Fance was in 1977, but I was unsure if the guillotine was in use uninteruptedly from 1792-1977. As it was so much connected with the revolutionary period I was not sure it was in use durng the restored kingdom 1814/15-1848. Anyway,as an oponent of the capital punishment, I´m glad it has ended n all countries in wetern Europe.

So the public didn't like the guillotine because they thought it was too fast and not fun? It would be interesting to show these people the electric chair in operation.

That was the first. Today, with the way France is being torn apart by foreign invaders, allowed by the French President Manual Macaroon, many are wonder if he will be the NEXT person to meet his end via this device. Will he meet the same end as Louis XVI ?
