Many people were so spooked the first time they saw it that some theaters brought in actual Catholic Priests to offer counseling and other religious comforts to people in the audience. A girl I went to junior high school with who was Mormon saw it and was haunted for three months. She came to school shaking and crying with fear and had to have counseling very secretly during the day. I'm not sure if maybe something very real and paranormal was actually bothering her irl. A man I spoke to said that when he first saw the movie and he went home, his infant daughter was breathing, similar to the way Regan was breathing while possessed. It freaked him out so much that he had his baby baptized the next day.

This is my faulty memory on the topic so take the fallowing with a grain of salt. There is a lot of back and forth on what was real and was cover up on the original story, so it's kind of hard to keep the original bits right. But... The Exorcist, the original book is VERY loosely based on a real story, the child was a boy, he was from a working class family not a well to do one, and he resisted tons of "modern" help before the church was finally contacted and brought in, they conducted multiple exorcism rights day after day on the boy, brining him to the church in town for each one, until he reached a point that he was too weak to be moved, I forget where the last Exorcism was held, but it wasn't a church, and it's then they gave the final right they needed to go through and the boy was free of the demons. He lived I believe until at least his late 60's and still has living family members. However the boy's cousin I believe started acting strangely, and it was uncovered too late that the demons had taken him, and if I recall he committed murders before he was stopped. Or so the story at the time went, there are conflicting versions of what happened outside of the boy, the demon possession, and eventually being free of it. The boy's name also changes due to the fact that they originally tried to keep their original names hidden from public to prevent unwanted attention.

Hi Ladies, it’s Clint from England, actor and movie lover. You have asked some real creepy experiences. This happened so it’s scary just going through it again. When I was 16 and home alone for the weekend it’s Friday night. Watching a “movie” and this shadow on the wall kept walking fm one end to the other and just repeats it self. For a few minutes inside and out trying to work out where this figure was coming fm. Now I’m getting freaked out. The shadow kept repeating walk from one side to the other. My heart was racing not wanting the shadow to suddenly jump off the wall at me, for real I’m convinced it’s a ghost at this point so anything could happen. I’m alone no one to laugh it off with just pure fear, plus it’s the mid 90s no mobile phones. I didn’t know what else to do but leave everything on and go up in my room. Left all lights tv, I was f-#ing scared. When I wake in the morning, everything is off. With the bright of day I still was scared, went downstairs the front door was open and everything was off. I know I left everything on. The shadow was gone and never returned. He most of been a lost ghost and let himself out the door eventually. Turned everything off before he left out of politeness. 😂 I might laugh about it now but it was terrifying at the time and still gives me the creeps when I talk about that one. 😎 you ask for it so I had too share. Love your reactions Ladies big 🤍 from England.. Clint

The Girl was insignificant. The Demon was after Father Merrin (for Exorcising it once before) and Father Karras, A Priest that was losing Faith. Father Merrin recognised the Little Stone head in the Rubble, and the Silver Medallion was His, from when he Banished the Demon before. The Demon placed it there to let him know it was back and Coming for him. So, in the End, the Demon "Won".

I worked as an Emergency Medical Technician for 12 years, and that work not only took me to some seriously haunted old hospitals and nursing homes all over NJ and NY. It also unfortunately surrounded me with death on a daily basis, with is rough to say the least on a Sensitive which I am.

Another movie about exorcisms that I like to see is "The exorcism of Emily Rose"😱, which is based on real events😰, I like how the debate between science and religion and since in the end everyone believes what they choose to believe, I highly recommend them. Also another highly recommended one that traumatized me again as a teenager is "The Blair Witch Project"😨, I would love that one day they can react to those two movies since I don't find many reactions from those two😊.

Some "side" info, FYI: Max Von Sydow (Father Merrin) was only 42 years old when he played the role. The infamous bedroom scene with the crucifix injured Ellen Burstyn's (Chris McNeil) back so severely they had to shut down production for six weeks (I think). Linda Blair (Reagan) was also injured during her bed scene (convulsions). I don't know if any of you read the novel, but in the book the demon was absolutely relentless on Father Karras, attacking his "manhood." There were several implications made by the demon that Karras was a homosexual--that's why he had lost his faith. The butler, Karl, was also severely attacked by the demon. The reason the priesthood sent for Father Merrin was because Merrin had done battle with this same demon (Pazuzu) during an exorcism in Africa, which "almost killed him." I would like to suggest a better version of this film. It is called "The Exorcist: the Version You've Never Seen." To me, it makes much more sense, showing how Reagan was slowly possessed and it also has the infamous" spider walk! If you want something even scarier, I suggest you check out "The Exorcist III".

You all missed so much. Still it was fun to watch your reaction. It's the 70's. The medical procedure Regan went through was an MRI. They were scanning her brain for abnormalities. At the end, when you all where saying where the demon went, etc. You don't remember this was discussed in the movie why Regan was even possessed. It was to make people feel hopeless and in despair because of an innocent girl being taken. If it can happen to her, then what about everyone not so good? The part where you all were joking about the effects, the image next to her when she was reaching for the sky was the same statue the priest found in Iraq. The demon head, the statue in Iraq and the statue in her room all are the same. And I could go on and on. It seemed you all were a maybe a little impatient at times for answers and started filling in the gaps with your opinions (often way off the mark) and that distracted you from the answers you would get. This movie, unlike movies of today's time, didn't spoon feed you. You had to wait for it to "cook" before you could enjoy it. It's not a microwave, jump scare (which are for the easily scared/entertained) movie. Which is in part why this movie was so great. We got to know everyone intimately BEFORE the horror truly came. We saw shadows here and there of something but couldn't really figure it out. It's because of that and so much more that people in the theater vomited, fainted, walked out and felt sick. The Catholic church had more people join than any other time in modern day history because of this movie. LOL This movie spread by word of mouth more than any marketing could ever do. They had to have nurses in some theaters just for the health risk! To this day NO movie has done to an audience what The Exorcist has done. NONE. Even after 50 years of its creation. If you all are going to watch any genre of movie that's considered a classic, I would hope you calm your minds and let the movie be told. It really will be worth it to wait for it to cook. Good meals usually are. Again, fun watch your reactions! Great setup! Cheers!

Winter in Kentucky, 2000-2001; night: a friend and I went to the house where his brother lived throughout the summer and fall. He was evicted after failure to meet payments. My friend, Michael, and I went to salvage any of his or his brother's belongings that may have been left behind. The security light was still active but power in the home was shut down to avoid bills and trespassers from taking advantage. Mike and I both had flashlights but to avoid wasting battery power, we lit the candle on the coffee table. As Mike sifted through the mail, I looked up and seen a dark silhouette at the left window. For a moment, I thought someone was standing outside and was too stupid to realize their shadow from the security light was giving them away. But, I soon realized it did not seem the "shade" of shadowing considering the power of the light. It seemed off. Soon, as my eyes focused better, it looked as if it was no 2-d on the window shade but actually a shadow standing on it's own in the room. I did not want to believe that so I moved left a little ad that was when I could tell this shadow was definitely in the room standing on it's own. In disbelief I asked Mike "Is that a ghost?" and Mike looked up and said "No, that is your shadow." I then told him "Mike, the candle is in front of us casting our shadows behind us." I remember watching Mike look behind us to see our shadows, as I said, then look back up to this other shadow and his mouth literally dropping open in disbelief. He soon realized it was standing in the room with us, not a shadow-silhouette cast onto any surface. True story.

It took me back on a little trip to the early 1970's and I could really feel the nostalgia, almost physically, upon viewing some of the more iconic scenes. At least five people died of mysterious causes during the filming of this. There’s a whole documentary about making the movie. You need to watch the extended version with enhanced special effects now that one is scary. I read the book one night during a terrible storm. Rain and wind causing the bushes to scrap against the windows, scared the dog crap out of me. I don’t know if it’s based on a real exorcism but I’m pretty sure the demon was real in history anyway. The ancients captured the demon and entombed it in the tomb, and when he opened up the tomb, they let the demon out. I think there’s three more movies in this series. If I remember right, the last movie is the best or the worst I can’t remember it’s been over 30 years since I watched the series. Gives you something to think about.

I'm 99.9% convinced that there is such a thing as demon possession. But in real life such possession rarely manifests itself in ways that will sell movie tickets, so the producers of this film felt it necessary to embellish the truth of what they were trying to convey. (Hope that makes sense.) If you want to see a modern-day example of what a demon-possessed person looks like, watch any speech delivered by Klaus Schwab.

In 1979 I was 7. I couldn't sleep. I woke up and went into the living room to lay on the couch. It faces my mothers bedroom that was the front room of the house on the second floor. Two sliding doors to her room were open and I could see the moon bright outside and the dark shape of her bed. There is no way in or out of that room but through the living room I was in. As I lay there for a bit I started to doze and closed my eyes. When I opened them again there was a dark figure in the shape of a man standing next to my mothers bed lookin down at her while she slept. I sat up and he looked towards me for a brief second but then looked down at my mother again. I started to call for her. "mom".......louder...."mom"......a third time louder "MOM". He looked at me said "get the fuck out of here". I yelled again loud "MOM". I heard "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" out loud but also in my head. It was angry. In the flash of a second, I knew it was evil and it was after my mother. Somehow I aslo knew, I was innocent and it could not hurt me. I jumped up and ran to my mother bed and leaped onto her. It was gone. My mother got up and turned on the light. I told her everything. She was freaked out and checked the door and windows which were all locked. I slept with her that night. I grew up and served in the Millitary, have a Masters Degree, worked for Federal Security and then a Police Officer until I recently retired. But I'll never forget that night.

Haven't finished watching your reaction yet but just to answer your quesiton up front, no the Exorcist was NOT based on a true story no matter what anyone tells you. It was based on a novel in which the author, William Blattey, used actual case files for things the possesed girl did. So the story is fictional but many of the thing Reagan did were based on real events from different cases. Things like projectile vomiting, unusual strength, developing numerous personalities, talking in foreign tongues and overt sexual behavior and words appearing on the victims skin etc... But importantly, the case files Blattey used for reference were psychological cases, not from the church.

Did you know that author William Peter Blatty's novel The Exorcist was inspired by the actual 1949 exorcism of a young boy from Cottage City, Maryland, and the horrifying 1634 Loudun exorcisms? The story goes that Blatty heard about the Maryland case while he was a student at Georgetown University.

Wow! What a reaction! A few times there, I thought Ellie was going to throw-up! A couple of those scenes _were_ *truly* disgusting! I read about Blatty's writing of 'The Exorcist'; he spent a *lot* of time researching cases of possession/exorcism, in the 1800s and 1900s mostly, along with some earlier ones. He wrote 'The Exorcist' using things that had happened in those cases, that had witnesses! The book became a very big best-seller; then Hollywood bought the story. When it came out in the theaters, it developed a real reputation as something that some people had real problems with. People walked out of shows, much more often than had happened with any other movies. But it still became a *huge* hit! I don't think you watched the Extended/Director's Cut, which has a *really* freaky scene in it (it wasn't in the theatrical release), that has Regan doing a mind-boggling move, coming down the stairs, looking like some sort of insect/spider! Go search on YT for "The Exorcist (1973) Spider Crawl" - *very* freaky!

The Homies: The Blueberry Void: When I was 20 in 1973, I saw The Exorcist in a darkened, sold-out movie theater with great sound and projection. I had to leave a light on to sleep that night. You say, "I want to see what's up with people running out of theaters?" You won't - not why some ran out when the demon's voice first came out of Regan when she slapped the doctor, for example, as well as in other parts of the movie. No one had ever seen a demon's voice convincingly and shockingly coming out of a little girl's mouth before that and what was to follow. At your age you probably can't understand how different American culture and theater audiences were in 1973, how much more impact the movie had because it was the first serious high-quality horror and demonic-possession movie ever made, how shocking the graphic language and realistic violence were for 1973 audiences - AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - when thinking about what to say in a reaction video instead of watching in silence - it is damn near impossible to grasp how believable the movie is because of how it slowly drags you into the story with believable, likable, true to real life characters long before presenting the parts of the movie that are hard to truly believe - all of which made the horrific story MORE BELIEVABLE and seem more real. Instead, you'll probably be conditioned by today's horror junk movies to expect the special effects to superficially scare you rather than the story that most of us would not have thought possible in 1973 but the movie made it seem possible, and knowing it was based on a true story, just the possibility the movie made us seriously consider that demonic possession really was possible and how horrifying it could be made it, BY MILES!, the most frightening movie experience ANY of us had up until 1973 AND AFTER (the proof is in the pudding - the audience reactions in 1973). You might grasp that it was and is a scary movie, but no way will you "see what's up" with why it was" BY FAR, the scariest movie EVENT any movie audience ever saw or ever will see.

I loved your reaction to this film. Believe it or not, the medical tests and equipment seen in the film were cutting-edge for 1973. They wanted everyone to see that every possible medical procedure was being tested prior to the exorcism. The bedroom set was refrigerated so the priest's breath could be seen because they didn't have computer graphics at the time. That also means that Linda Blair (the girl) was freezing during most of the filming. The room was also up on these things that allowed the entire room to shake like an earthquake. The footage of the priests falling down was shot when the room was shaken. I think the thing a lot of us are interested in is your own personal opinions on this and the topic of the paranormal. It's one thing to hear other people's accounts, what are your own? Have you ever dared go to a place you've heard was haunted? Have you had any encounters of your own? I'm curious because your culture might be significantly different from other people who've seen this. I'd love to hear you tell us about your own experiences. I think this movie has the reputation of being "the scariest movie ever made" and it leaves this idea that we will be terrified. But I think modern audiences would find this movie to be quite tame. But it is a good drama even if you don't find it scary. The whole idea of an atheist going through modern medicine and psychology and science can't explain what's happening. So the only hope being a priest who is losing his faith and is telling you to retry all the methods you already tried. Also this movies actually pretty faithful to the book. Only thing I can really criticize about movie v book is there seemed to be less focus on the detective and there was some dialog between the preists that I liked that wasn't in the film.

This would be why you don't mess around with trying to invite the spiritual realm to come and play via Ouija boards, seances, etc. etc. You would be messing around with powers you cannot control and don't understand.

I have a recommendation for you ladies: "Skeleton Key". It's really good, and very appropriate for the Halloween season.

Hi Homies. Hope you don't have many nightmares after watching this. 🤣 "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is a really good movie as well. Based on true events, and the possession/exorcism portrayal is more realistic for an (alleged) possession. Although really good, parts of "The Exorcist" are a bit over the top. Also watched your reaction to "Train to Busan". Glad you're willing to do non-english movies. Would like to recommend the French movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf". The english dubbed version isn't too bad, but really needs to be watched in French w/subtitles. And the Russian movie "T-34" is pretty good too. Has a bit of a different storyline for a WWII movie. This one definitely needs to be watched in Russian w/subtitles, as the english dubbed version isn't very good. Anyway, looking forward to what's next. 😀 Happy Halloween. 👻

I still think The Exorcist is the gold standard of horror films. Not only were the horror aspects bone chilling but everything about the movie was amazing from the acting, character development, family issues, religious conflicts, cinematography, and music. The Exorcist is as deeply affecting today as it was over 50 years ago. But The Homie's viewpoint is totally understandable given today's generation who prefer jumpscares, gimmicks, and CGI to quell the attention deficit disorder. LOL!

I think he knew at the end that he would not be able to complete the exorcism by his self. The only way he could save the girl was to get the demon to come into himself and once the demon transferred to him he knew that sacrifice would be the only way for him to succeed. I think what happened in that room came very close to breaking him permanently but talking to her mother, in that moment he regained his faith. He may have faltered but in the end he pulled it together for one last battle for the soul of that little girl.

People of the modern age would say those people of the 16th century and before were stupid , superstitious , ignorant people believing in demons ,possesions, exorcisms when today , we know better. Today we have science , psychiatry , medicines , able to treat these things and so we know better today .No so ,not really . Even with all our modern science , tech, many would say demons , possesed people still exist but in more subtle , devious ways. Many would say those controlling this world , super rich , inhuman , elites , are like posessed individuals , they do whatever Satan tells them to do and are rewarded by him accordingly with super riches and wealth . It's worth considering this , I think.

Don’t forget suicides are believed to go to hell, so this was much more of a sacrifice for him not knowing what would happen to his immortal soul.

True,, but if you look back on the dialogue the demon was saying beforehand that it was wanting and welcoming the priest to dwell with them. It was all orchestrated by the demon to kill the old exorcist and to take the soul of the younger priest.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Karras came to his faith again when he remembered the righteousness of selfless sacrifice, the same way that Jesus was sacrificed to purge the sins of the world. Karras was the true exorcist.

Well... this movie is not based on real story. It is based of a novel of the same name... and the novel took an inspiration from some exorcism that happend in year 1949... but the story is not real. So there was a lot lot lot of dramatization.

I‘m happy that there are so many new reactions to this film right now. The first time I watched it when I was quite young and when it was over I rewound the cassette and directly watched it a second time. I think it is really a masterpiece.

I was only 10 years old when this movie came out. There was an older girl in the neighborhood that would often get to go see rated R movies. She would then entertain the rest of the kids in the neighborhood with a blow-by-blow of the entire plot of whatever movie she had recently seen. She was 12, a bit of a Tomboy and was often the source of legends and tall tales told in our neighborhood growing up. If there was an urban legend to be told, she was the one telling it. So there we are, all straddling our bicycles in a circle in the middle of the road while "Lucy" thrills us with every gruesome and sacrilegious scene in The Exorcist, all delivered with the goriest details and all the F bombs included. The imagery my mind created at her detailed descriptions of key scenes was seared into my mind. I did finally get to see the highly edited version on TV sometime later and eventually the full version about 10 years later on HBO but I will always remember Lucy's vicarious retelling of the movie as my favorite version. The other stand out movie that I remember her telling us about was Tommy by The Who. I still have never seen that one. But in a away, I kinda have .
